That is how it goes, yes. I've quoted that a number of times here without crediting Hemingway. Looking at maps it's tempting to think of the war as a "math of square kilometers". But in reality it is somewhat more like a dam or levy (the forces are mostly scrunched up by the line of contact. Only platzform I’m hearing this on is here and solely by some Russbots claiming Ukrainians would be sailing so. Russia is nowhere near winning either lol . Also polls suggesting that around 50% of Russias population wants to end this war and withdraw from Ukrainian territory also tells you a lot about fatigue among the Russian population. I mean, imagine your government spends millions and trillions for a war they started on another countries ground, losing 1k+ soldiers on a daily basis and then on top also looses ground against this other nation. So now Vuhledar (or Ugledar if you will) is pretty much under operational encirclement. Took a long time for The Bear to figure this one out but with additional trained manpower and pulverizing glide bombs they have enough resources to pull it off. Given the blood and treasure they've spent trying to take it they might consider this fortress town the Mordor of the SW Donetsk front. Finally taking it will surely give a tremendous boost to morale, along with removing an enormous impediment to further progress and so opening another gateway to Zaporizhia and Dnipro.

I’m disappointed at Russia for taking nearly two years (and losing hundreds of soldiers) to take this very small city (less than 15,000), I know that this is a war of attrition, but two years for a small town not far from the front lines, Russia has to do better.

Kiev has very big problems. And the issue is not even in the breakthrough of Russian troops in one place or another, but in the fact that the pressure on his front is going on immediately along its large length. First of all, due to the total superiority in fire weapons (artillery and aviation). This leads to large losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) personnel and a drop in morale among recruits (who are in the majority). As a result, the UAF has many deserters, and many strongholds (according to local officers) simply have no one to defend (instead of 10-15 people, there are often 4-6). And sometimes there is no one at all (when the entire garrison of the stronghold retreats, and there is simply no one to replace it). This is where RAF progress here comes from. If we look at the points, there are battles for the spoil heap of the Selidovskaya mine, which RAF are bypassing from the north and south, taking in pincers. And yesterday there was simply the most powerful artillery and air preparation in the Tsukurino area. Today an assault on this settlement is possible. And also, the assault on Gornyak continues. Slowly but surely RAF are moving forward here. There are battles in the area of Ostroy (completely occupied by RAF) and colony No. 82 (which RAF also completely occupied by the evening), which poses a threat to the UAF garrison in the area of Maksimilianovka. In this way, powerful pressure is created on the entire front, which, in combination with the flanking (mechanized) and penetrating actions of RAF assault aircraft (in small groups of 4-5 people), breaks the UAF’s defenses and forces him to surrender line after line.

When the russians have enough forces reaching the city its basicly done. This battle will not last long and will be decided fast. No Bachmut Scenario possible here.

It's starting to feel like the Russian army is ending its war of attrition with active defence towards a more traditional war of territory. This is either because Ukraine's lines are so bad that they feel confident about taking these risks or Russia wants to secure certain areas prior to the Autumn rains.

They're still doing war of attrition, the movement is the result of degraded Ukraine troops who is suffering from attrition so once no one hold the line Russia move but when Ukraine decided to hold the position Russia then stop to grind them down and started war of attrition again where Ukraine decide to defend every inch of their land.

Seems like the Ukrainian lines are thinning out to a critical level without their Reserves that are becoming more & more trapped in the Kursk Area were they have no well prepared defenses positions. It seems that Ukrainians have a bad or undisciplined habit of getting intoxicated by any success & allowing their offensives to move beyond a safe zone where they later have to pay heavily for their Mistakes.

I think it's mostly because MS only relies on MOD reports and geolocations, while WU takes more liberties in reporting, often using telegram reports that have been acknowledged by both Ukrainians and Russians.
