The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has approved 14 key amendments to the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024, sparking intense opposition backlash. With over 450 amendments submitted by both ruling and opposition members, the committee concluded its deliberations in just a couple of hours, leaving opposition leaders visibly frustrated.
Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee and DMK MP A Raja accused the chairman, Jagdambika Pal, of bias and limiting opposition voices. Meanwhile, BJP's Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal defended the amendments, highlighting their potential to benefit the Muslim community.
Key changes include:
Only practising Muslims with at least five years of experience can donate property for Waqf.
Waqf tribunals will now have three members, including a Muslim scholar.
State governments can appoint an ex-officio official to oversee Waqf matters.
What’s next for the bill? The draft report will be shared with committee members, and a final meeting is scheduled for January 29 to adopt the report.
