great video mate and thanks for the tool, showing people how to properly deal with hot rolled bar is a great idea as its easy to get a hold of and relatively cheap and also people might not know its actually not "round" !

Good pointers on technique there Max. I must admit disliking black bar for many reasons. Might have to go and make me one of those ball turners to your design. Very elegant solution that could also be power fed easily enough. Thank you for the video.

I think you will find that is Hot Rolled, ref has mill scale on it, Cold Rolled, is when hot rolled is fed through a pickling process to remove the scale, and through rollers to improve size etc. Edit: changed Not to Hot.

The point is Max did a good job of pointing out different solutions, whereas I would have centre drilled the end and machined the centre jig position then faced the end & ball turned the end. But not taking anything from Max who did an Excellent Alternative.

Hi Max, I have still got to make a Ball turning rig with a Roraty Table. Love banana steel especially when its a chrome molly, in a previous life I always used aluminium shim stock to allow the shaft to move so it didn't load up the jaws. If the shim stock isn't used, when the jaws are backed off, it springs and you can never get the shaft straight. Great to see you getting subs coming your way, it will take off big time. Cam

Nice, I am not familiar with that type of ball turner. It looked to me like you had a hand crank off the end of the carriage that rotates the tool post. I’d like to see how that works.

Letting it stand is ok for light work . If you do heavier & eccentric work , bolt it .

Fire is 10kms away , our property is in the yellow zone . Watch & act . I think we will be ok hopefully . The winds are playing havoc for the firefighters . Not sure if it is fact or fiction but i heard it started from a bloody meth lab in the hills . Cheers .
