A major Ukrainian precision strike has just destroyed the headquarters for the Russian 8th Guards Combined Arms Army outside of the city of Donetsk just moments ago. This major loss will greatly affect Russian warfighting abilities on the Pokrovsk front. In Engels a major fuel depot has been hit, and the fires are currently raging out of control, threatening to destroy the entire facility before long, and completely wipe out fuel reserves needed to run the Strategic bomber fleet at the airfield nearby. In Los Angeles the fires continue to burn out of control and seem to have no signs of stopping soon, as the fire chief has stated that the city was unprepared for a fire of this scale.

LAFD is highly competent. No way to prepare for 100 mph Santa Ana winds sending embers miles. Air firecraft futile to put out fires w water against fierce winds. No rain since May and hottest summer so palm trees became torches. I spoke w my daughter who drove to nearby Santa Monica. Not under threat of burning to the ground as you say. It's catastrophic and positive action to assist victims and first responders is what is needed.

Only .24 inch of rain since May. 😢 My cousin was telling me about the Santa Anna winds and they are not conducive for fighting fire during a drought.

But how can there not be procedures in place for this?! California has basically since time immemorial had crazy wildfires, how can that be? Corruption or incompetence? Because it has to be one or the other...

The tribes who lived there for thousands of years kept it under control with good forestry management practices. It is a modern stupidity to build up huge amounts of highly flammable material all over the place and all around where people live when people could instead burn the brush early. The winds are more severe than I have seen in previous, catastrophic fires, but the underlying problem is the same in California as it is (after the Green Party passed some idiotic legislation a few years ago) in Australia: poor management leading to exacerbated and avoidable outcomes.

@@Rok_Piletic what do you think would prevent this? Lawn sprinklers? A bucket? You'd need thousands of whatever you decide to use. You might as well piss on a volcano for all that will do ya'. Most places cut back vegetation and put solid landscaping around the property ...but with winds this fast nothing will stop these fires. The winds need to calm down before they can take care of business. Remember, this is LA. and these hills and canyons can't be easily gotten to.

In 2011, I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail. I was one of the first, if not the first, to hike through the Station fire, which happened a few years earlier. The devastation was incredible. Many of the plants in those parts contain flamable substances, which helps them to catch fire and spread their seeds. Things are a lot more flammable there then they are in the east. Fire is a friend of the ecosystem, as are the Santa Ana winds. There are reasons why fires get so big out west.

This is true in Yellowstone National Park. The Lodgepole Pines (and other conifers) require the heat to open the cones and disburse the seeds. So, the occasional fires in Yellowstone are beneficial… unless they threaten areas inhabited by people. That’s where we run into problems.

Dude that is NOT how the oilfield works. After drilling, they have to do a completion. Which requires pulling OUT the drill string (including the drill bit), then run the production string, cap the well, then either tie the well into a pipeline. If there isn't enough pressure at the bottom of the hole to push the oil ( and/or natural gas) to the top of the well (annulus). THEN a pump-jack is installed, and a rod-rig is brought in to run a suction cup (pump) to the BHA (Bottom-Hole Assembly) then attack that to the pump jack so as it comes up, it pulls oil up the PRODUCTION string, not the drill string. Would people be interested if I made a channel or page that explains the oil and gas industry a little better?

The current ferocity of these Santa Ana winds is a direct result of the low pressure system sitting over New Mexico, rotating counter-clockwise, drawing the winds down from the north into SoCal. As it moves eastward into Texas tonight into tomorrow, the winds will die down. From there, this same low pressure system will be the engine driving a pretty serious winter storm through the deep south. Kinda crazy to ponder that the fires out west are connected to the upcoming deep south winter storm, but that is indeed the case.

Watching this from the UK. Didn't realize that the fire in California was that extensive. One guy was saying on the News this morning that the trees needed to be thinned out a lot more, as they are the main reason for the rapid spread of the fire. It's been pretty windy there also, so that just fans the blaze. Hope not too many succumbed to it, as Enforcer said, it's not necessarily the fire itself, but the fire sucking the oxigen from the air. So suffocation instead of burns. Devastating for Malibu.

At this point in the year everything is extremely dry. Everything from trees, grass, bushes, etc doesn’t take much to catch fire. The Southern California area also has a lot of trees and plants that protect themselves from drought with natural volatile oils (eucalyptus, most nut trees, etc) so that once they catch fire they are loaded with sap, oils, and other things that burn very well. There will always be people saying there is insufficient preparation. You get the same thing when there are eruptions in Hawaii, or wildfires in Texas, etc. Someone always is complaining that we should be putting more into resources but then come tax time want to cut down the taxes.

When you combine intense winds with severe, prolonged drought (hardly any rain in SW US all winter), then add in some mountianous terrain, this creates a situation that is difficult to fight fires. Aerial drops of water or slurry can only deter spread, they cannot eliminate fire. We have fires in AZ in the mountainous high country now as well and suppression has to be done by actual firefighters by hand. Every situation is different, of course, but conditions were ripe for a difficult scenario. Terrain, weather, amount of dry fuel from drought ...all these things are big factors

The fires did not destroy Los Angeles. There are a couple of neighborhoods in a couple of cities in So Cal that have been destroyed. While horrible for people who have lost homes and businesses, the wind is dying down and the fire fighters will get these fires under control in the next few days. Wind driven fires like this are impossible to fight until the wind dies down. All you can do is get out the the way.

Your first couple of sentences seem demeaning. Am I off on that? Forgive me if I am. Just a heads up, 'neighborhoods' are huge in socal simply because of the typography. A "couple of neighborhoods". 35+ square miles and still zero contained, 70 thousand ppl evacuated, some have died, over 1000 buildings many were homes, 1.5 million ppl without power, etc. is nothing to take lightly. Right now it is LA's most destructive fire on record...and is still burning.

@@bluflaam777LSA I think the winds played a huge part.. that and the City of LA not having dealt with these ghinormous fires for a long time. Add some water shortages (due to drought and certain dam systems) and it doesnt have to take much for fires to go utterly out of control. I dont think corruption should be the first go to explanation for this though and i agree that a clear open investigation into this SHOULD be done. that destruction reminds me of a couple disaster relief missions I have been part of over the years. Poor people. I had a 800 year old oak that slammed to the ground during a freak storm with windgusts upto 120 km/hour which is around 75 miles per hour. You would think an 800 year old ok would withstand that but then the ground was utterly soaked ( the same amount of rain for 2 months fell in just 36 hours).

Malibu!! Born and raised in LA. Back when I was a kid the LAFD and LA County fire departments were the best in the world. They learned the hard back during the Bel Aire fires back in the early 60’s. Since then they’ve always had planned for fires such as these and have dealt with other major fires in a textbook manner. But with the mayor cutting LAFD by 20 million doesn’t help. Without getting too political, there’s way too much DEI hiring going on these days. I moved away from there 12 years ago, but I just talked to my brother and he’s never seen such a S-t show like this one. Much of ecosystems in the area are "fire climax communities". Plants grow flammable brush to encourage fires that "roast" their seeds so they can grow new plants and blossoms. Due to sprawl, fires are suppressed, leading to a dangerous buildup of brush, causing devastating fires, killing the plants and threatening homes. San Diego has had so many there's not much left to burn. My best wishes to Malibu.

As a bushfire fighter (Australia) I need to offer a correction in regards to the wildfires. A large bushfire will not asphyxiate due to lack of oxygen generally. The major hazards are inhalation of smoke causing respiratory issues with carbon monoxide and other toxic gases and burns/ heat stress from radiant heat of the fire. The small respite is that most people who die are dead before being engulfed in flames.

Yes which also was massively limiting the equipment that could be used. Helicopters for tracking and transport, and aircraft water drops, are really limited when winds are like that. We routinely get grassland wildfires in Texas with 70+ mph sustained winds and the fires can spread through areas almost as fast as response vehicles can drive, and it can jump 1/2 mile through embers with ease.

Good day Enforcer and Enforcer Matt...currently watching...I lived in California for total 27 yrs with 20 yrs in southern Cali area. As Matt said last nite, the perfect wind storm with fire had hit the LA area and it's impossible to contain even if we had both fire depart and national guard there. Until the winds die down then fly more planes and we could control it. I was in the San Diego fire i7 yrs ago and same thing happened so there is no way to prepare for these wind storm's fury. And to evacuate so many people is impossible in a short time and the fires lighting advance strike.😮 So I really don't think it's the city's fault as if the big one earthquake would hit it would be the same.

As a retired Chief Office of 30 years in SoCal I think that the front line firefighters were as ready as they could be. Administration failed them. For LAFD Fire Chief to say that they were unprepared is a slap in the face. If they were not prepared that responsibility falls squarely on her desk. Secondly the mayor failed them for cutting the budget for the FD by around $17million. Also the mayor cut public works budget; they help keep hydrants working. She was also out of the country when the forecasted winds arrived. Third is our illustrious governor who thinks it’s more important to save a tiny fish than it is to flow water south. Weather events like these are nothing new; been going on for centuries. When they blow all firefighters can do is try to keep ahead of the fire and protect life and property. No single agency or surrounding agencies have enough resources to handle a situation like this on their own. Mutual Aid agreements are always in place but it takes time for firefighters to arrive. Winds of this magnitude, 50-60mph with gusts up to 100 grounds all aircraft. A perfect storm imho. Sorry if I sounded like I was bashing; just wanted to give some perspective as to what goes on before situations like this happen. This is just a quick nutshell. There should be many recommendations for improvement at all levels.

I work for LA County water. The fact that if we had endless supply of water we would still not meet the demands of yesterday. We had a power outage and our infrastructure is not up to par. We have the LA River that once was the primary water source here. Now it is too contaminated with toxic and agricultural runoff to be used. We could do so many things with the water that doesn’t do with drinking it but we don’t. LA alone loses 7% of its water (more) just from leaky (85 billion gallons/year) pipes. Even without the power outage our pumping stations would have a hard time keeping up. We need more storage in the form of water towers but nobody wants them in their neighborhood. We can agree that Newsom is the worse governor in the US!

As I had lived there before, water was always a problem for southern Cali cities for the last 100 years and has been on desks of all previous mayors & governors of the state. Its not so much the water to fight the fire, it's the manpower and resources to respond, but you cannot respond, fight and control this fire unless the hurricane type winds stop or rain shows to help. Drought is the biggest problem especially with climate change. We do have be more prepared for these dangers and that's all the city's citizens together. Maybe the new President's men (billionaires) donate some of their riches to help.

I live in the desert out east of there in 29 Palms by the Marine base-it rained and rained and rained all summer. My normally dry and empty yard turned into a botanical garden, I've never see so much growth. Then the rain stopped and this is one of the driest winters I can recall. So all that vegetation dried up into kindling. Nevertheless, this is just a small taste of what LA will be like after the anticipated 'Big One', which we can only hope doesn't hit on a windy day, because there will be fires started all over and all the aqueducts will be cut.

In the press that conference I saw, some official from Los Angeles said that they had been prepared for TWO major fires within the city, but FOUR at once is what has overwhelmed them. Given that generally when we hear of multiple fires in that region, they're spread out all over the sprawling metro that's bigger than some states, and since the City of Los Angeles is predominantly urban, to be ready for two at one time would have seemed reasonable. I suspect there will be some major changes in the structuring of fire districts, regardless of county lines

Matt, you cannot have enough firefighters available full-time to have even a ghost of a chance of stopping the raging torrent of sparks and firebrands driven by gale force to category 1 hurricane winds. Los Angeles has mutual aid agreements with fire departments across California and even neighboring states. Firefighters are coming from Nevada, Oregon, many parts of Northern California. Yes, LA gets droughts, Santa Ana winds and homes built into rough surrounding mountains. Perhaps we should have government tell people where they can and can’t live. It is a conundrum with no easy answers. Saying LA city and LA county don’t have contingency plans is a Fox News type distortion.

Living on or close to the foothill in Los Angeles the risk of fire is very high. They build beautiful homes to get a skyline view of the city of lights. When a fire gets touched-off it just races up the hill taking everything in it's path. Add 100 mile winds to the mix. I suspect the fires got touched-off by power lines with tree branches getting blown into them. Trust me, they will put homes back on those hillsides where it's a "roll of the dice" once again.

California used to have a budget for clearing deadwood from the forests, making wildfires easier to manage. I've heard many quotes from firefighters and I believe the forestry service, saying the forests are now similar to powder kegs, ready to go up. Not sure of the latest budget, but unless California has restored the budget for the forestry workers, I think any preparations for this kind of fire would have to be strictly volunteer work. I guess California has other places to put its money, rather than protecting its lands and the lives of its people.

We live in Ventura County and the worst of these fires are south of us. We also have family in Beverly Hills just east of the I405 freeway and friends in Brentwood which is now evacuated. The LA fires are being handled by the LA Fire Department and the State is not heavily involved in this effort. However the State and the City are both at fault for the water pressure which is rapidly decreasing or, in some cases, non-existent. The state rations water down the Central Valley to the LA basin to preserve the Delta Smelt. Every other farm in the Central Valley its denied water to preserve the smelt so one can literally see a checkerboard of dead crops of nut trees and plowed under plant crops as one drives through the Central Valley. These are liberal environmentally insane policies which subvert farming and water availability to the relatively worthless smelt. Karen Bass, the liberal LA major is busy on her African vacation so not all is bad related to these horrific fires. Water management is not a priority in California but hotel housing and health care for illegals is. Reality always wins.

In California, 50-60mph winds with 100mph gusts and bone-dry forests with unchecked undergrowth? With winds that high and a fuel load that nasty, those fires aren't stopping until they run out of things to burn. And... people have been telling them this for decades: Reduce the fuel load, or watch it burn. Californians made their choice. It burns.

"Malibu" Such a tragedy. 😓 Wind speeds of that strength would negate any and all chance of controlling that fire - regardless of where it was in the world. Grounding aerial support killed any chance at all. Fire hydrants running dry is a major concern however and needs to be investigated . Let's pray as many as possible made it out!

The insurance companies are the first line of defense against things like this. I.E. assessment of wildfire risk. Following that comes management of kindling species by zoning codes & city management. Warren County, OH implemented a reactive method of power line tree management. presumably a rookie mistake originated by a newly minted manager looking to improve his bottom line. Cue an ice storm. 100,000 people out of power for weeks because of the allowed tree growth. It took them two years to catch back up with proactive tree trimming, however in the following years ice storms have not been a catastrophe. The feds are notoriously incompetent in the same vein. 100+ years of zero wildfire tolerance has led to unnatural conditions which leads to super fires that damage the topsoil. That's a bunch of kindling. When a fire tops one of these brush piles it's been estimated to be putting out the yield of 1 megaton explosion every 15 minutes. There is no substitute for proactive management. Save your popcorn for when the San Andreas fires.

Hi. I live in Western Australia. We know all about big fires. There is really only one viable solution - being proactive. That is, doing regular winter "Cold-Burning" of areas with high levels of combustible under-growth. This produces a "cold-fire" which burns slowly, stays on the ground, and doesn't destroy the top-soil. It is also wildlife-friendly, as the animals can easily outpace the movement of the fire. With proper planning and resourcing, this method can save lives and property, by removing the potential for a major fire. However. Unfortunately, most politicians can't see very far beyond, either the end of their noses, or the end of their term in office. So they tend to not want to allocate the resources needed to fulfil the requirements of such a plan. One thing that does surprise me, is that I would expect insurance companies would be all for spending some of their budgets in this area, as a preventative measure. Doing so could save them millions of dollars in claims. Anyway, I pray for those who have been affected by these fires, and hope that the fires can be brought under control soon. God bless you LA.

as a fire for 31 years let me tell you that there is nothing humanly possible you can do to prepare for a fire like that in a city no city can have that much water available to fight a fire like that, you know how big a water main would have to be to have that much water available throughout the city
