Browse around the forums for a few hours, and you‘re sure to be met with several posts claiming that an EQ should never be boosted and only cut. While in most cases cutting EQ will more than likely yield the results you seek, is it ever forgivable to crank the frequencies in your quest for tone? Join Sweetwater‘s Mitch Gallagher as he tests this question while demonstrating the different ways cutting and boosting can be used to flavor your tracks.

Back in studio when I was learning my mentor said avoid boosting highs because you are also booth any noise, hiss, or unwanted sounds. Also boosting highs don't have a natural sound. For low end boosting is fine generally no unwanted sounds and boosting low end as a more natural sound. Now this went along with how we recorded during tracking, we generally recorded very bright sounding tracks so we had a clear defined track to work with when mixing. So in mix we could cut high when necessary and not bring up the noise floor. Then boosting low end sounded natural. Recording bright also helps kept increasing gain from EQ down. All about planning your recording process from the beginning to the end first.

Did you record analog or digital? I’m curious if your mentor would boost highs during tracking because of the high-end rolloff of tape.

Your mentor clearly doesn't do this professionally. Learn from the pros.

Depends on the effect you are looking for. Talking specifically about mixing recorded audio. Harmonic distortion is not always a bad thing. Many of your favorite mixers use boost and distortion to make the mixes you like exciting. Cutting also makes room for all the elements within a mix that don't reside in a certain range. But boosting 1700/1800 for example in your guitars can bring excitement to the track that may help a section to stand out or "step forward" to help elevate a chorus for example. Don't fear the boost!:-)
