This is all old stuff to me, but Mitch, you did a GREAT job of explaining not only how to clean up your tracks before mixing, but WHY you're doing it! The "WHY" is something that often gets overlooked in some explanations of different parts of the recording/mixing process. And "cleaning up" is so much easier now than it was in the days of analog!

I'd love to see what exactly you do to de-hum, de-noise, de-plosive etc. etc. tracks - preferably vocals. That's the part of "mixing" or editing that I have been sleeping on most. I do have RX7, but I always feel like de-XXing things really changes the sound and feeling of the vocals. It helps in some ways, but it's destructive in others and I don't like that.

Get it right at the source and that won't be an issue. Grab a Kaotica Eyeball and that should help with what you've got going on as far as background noise and plosives. Otherwise, mic technique when recording. It's not as technical as you're making it, you shouldn't need to destroy a track with de-xx when you're processing.

Thanks for watching! For many functions in Pro Tools, if you hold Option (Mac) or Alt (Windows) while selecting or changing something, it will be applied across all tracks. Hope this helps, Mitch

I think I'm misunderstanding something on the high hat bleed. I get that there was bleed during the recording process. But there shouldn't be bleed between the tracks in the DAW, correct? So, how would the other tracks that contain the high hat bleed be affected by EQ that's only directly applied to the high hat track? What am I missing here?

Great question! You are correct that there is no longer bleed among the tracks that are in the DAW once they are recorded. The problem is, say we look at a tom track... Say it has significant bleed from the hi-hat captured during recording. If we boost the treble on that tom track, the hi-hat bleed recorded on that track will also have its high end boosted. Now, when we play back, the hi-hat will seem brighter, because we’ve EQ’d the bleed in the tom track - but we haven’t EQ’d the hi-hat itself. In other words, both the tom and the hi-hat are on the same track (to a certain extent) because of the bleed. If we EQ that track, everything on it will be EQ’d, including the bleed captured on that track, which can throw off the overall EQ. Hope this helps, Mitch
