Even more basic: People like to feel comfortable with what they "know". When they hear/see things that clash with these things, they feel uncomfortable - that's cognitive dissonance. So they reject these things as "wrong" and "incorrect" because it makes them feel uncomfortable, rather than just changing their understanding. Because that's HARD - to learn and believe something that the people you consider your "peers" have been wrong about the ENTIRE TIME. And now you realise that people you know and love are believing something that is a lie or at best a corruption of the truth. And you're not sure you can deal with the fact that they may not want you to be their friends/colleagues anymore because you cause THEM to have cognitive dissonance now.

If it were any ordinary person breaking the law 20 times that person would, apart from paying fines and maybe doing probation or time, find it next to impossible to find a decent job because they’d have to fill out a conviction disclosure form and 20 convictions would be difficult to justify to a would be employer. Look where we are, a bunch of obviously privileged, protected people just in your face taking the p**s and people not only standing for it but agreeing with it. I’m not a full on Labour supporter but a hundred times better than these scammers. Proportional representation may be the way forward, not sure how we get there. Remember: in any relationship (personal, family, workplace, transactional, political), the only people that would claim that everyone else is just as bad AND you should defend and stay with them are toxic. Unhealthy. Abusers. If you see someone defending the relationship they've chosen by claiming that they're much better than the dysfunctional one they're in to THIS degree? We've all seen it. They're told what to cut out of their lives, who to hate, how everyone else has it in for them and THAT'S why they have it hard. And when they're shown a clear example (or twenty) of how they have a choice to get out of the abusive dynamic, they make excuses for why they're in the position they're in. First with a forced air of calm with nervous laughter, and then with seething rage. And they go right back to the abuse. The Conservatives aren't even a political party anymore. It's just an abusive relationship at this point. They cut you off from your friends in Europe, they left you broke, they're making life harder for you every day, they give you words like "woke" and "leftist" to hate everyone else with. And now you see the abused patsies that keep the cycle of abuse going, the abused that become abusers.

What has voting for a party got to do with a toxic marriage? All politicians are as bad, just in different ways. I voted Boris as I really didn`t think he would be as bad as Corbyn. Everyone was dealt a bad hand, as I have never seen such a poor set of choices we had.
