Even more basic: People like to feel comfortable with what they "know". When they hear/see things that clash with these things, they feel uncomfortable - that's cognitive dissonance. So they reject these things as "wrong" and "incorrect" because it makes them feel uncomfortable, rather than just changing their understanding. Because that's HARD - to learn and believe something that the people you consider your "peers" have been wrong about the ENTIRE TIME. And now you realise that people you know and love are believing something that is a lie or at best a corruption of the truth. I remember speaking to many people like this in the early to mid 2010s when I lived in the UK. Many people told me they would vote UKIP. Not a single person could ever tell me a member of the party not named Nigel or a single policy that didn't involve immigration. Remember: in any relationship (personal, family, workplace, transactional, political), the only people that would claim that everyone else is just as bad AND you should defend and stay with them are toxic. It's now 30 years since I left the UK. People like this make me enormously grateful I made that choice .... it wasn't easy at the time, whereas I suspect it might be quite easy today. I've not had to put up with 30 years of being surrounded by people like this. Phew....
