Because B R E X I T They appear to have forgotten what absolute S*** the Tories are where I live in parts of Rotherham. The part where the Battle of Orgreave took place. Where the army was disguised as Police and allowed to cavalry charge striking miners like some medieval battle. And the current lot are 10x worse.

If you're a working man who followed the tory path; bought shares from Sid and Beatty, sold them straight back to the bank. Bought your council house at a 80% discount, set up your own business, etc. You've probably done OK out of them, and the country. Now the chickens are home to roost, but we sold the coop.

Critical thinking is a crucial skill, but many individuals might not have the time or education to practise it effectively. They often fail to question the underlying motives of society or to ask themselves, "Am I being misled?" This capability to scrutinise information critically is a skill that those in the higher echelons of society are typically well-trained in. This caller perfectly illustrates the issue: they present a problem and then suggest a drastic solution, such as banning foreigners, without demonstrating the critical thinking necessary to fully understand and consider the facts.

@@sod16 Exactly. This is why Farage was so impactful. He was on every show addressing every problem with a one word reply "Immigrants". This served to abbreviate the issues that people wanted to discuss. And when you've only got seconds to ask a question on programs like QT, people use the short-hand language that is offered by the authoritative figures. Does that make sense?

@_____alyptic some American who objected to trans people serving in the military or in politics because he thought they were mentally ill. He said he'd deny them the right to have careers in those areas because he didn't like the trans community. I pointed out that the military accepts people on merit and on their ability to do the job (there's a number of trans individuals currently working for the US military). I said that if a trans person worked in politics, then people could choose not to vote for them or the party they work for. But he disagreed and said laws should be passed to deny them the opportunity. That's bigotry.

Combined with globalisation, where poverty wages can be paid elsewhere by global companies that can choose where and when they pay tax. Next stop will be almost full automation, where, under the current model, the few get even richer and the many aren't employed at all. And there the broken model collapses because the many can't buy the goods of the few. So the state hands out money to go the businesses of the rich and the right screams socialism.

People of working age people, 18 - 67 has never been a smaller proportion of the population than now. There may be more people in the group but the number each one of us in that demographic has to support is the highest ever and rising. The only age group rising as a proportion of the population is over 67s. Nothing against that age group, I love my parents, but a little bit of self awareness goes a long way when they're trying to stop people coming here to help me shoulder their burden

I take your point. However AI plus ever increasing amounts of automation and the movement of jobs abroad will surely make it difficult to provide jobs for all that need them - including the immigrants we currently need. We have a lot of people struggling either on poverty wages or no wages who need a future (yes James - I do actually interact with such people). A balanced strategy needs to be enacted to manage the way forwards.

That’s ok, it’s still a platform where your average citizen can listen to level headed conversations on a topic. Radio here often has people calling in, saying their peace and it’s left there which lends itself to sensationalist getting the spotlight. It would be nice to have a show that genuinely pokes holes and interrogated the views of both sides even if it’s fringe.

If it is true that immigration strengthened the economy then why are we still doing so badly? I'm not saying it hasn't, but the premise is belied by everything that we all see in this country. You can't just say to people "but immigration strengthens the economy" when nothing about their lives has been improved while there has been a steep influx of people into the smaller regional cities and villages. "How the cake is sliced" implies that it is a lie that we need immigration, a lie that covers up for greedy people sharing so little of the cake to begin with. Not an unreasonable argument, widening wealth inequality is undeniable. The benefits of immigration are just adding to their pile, not ours.
