Critical thinking is a crucial skill, but many individuals might not have the time or education to practise it effectively. They often fail to question the underlying motives of society or to ask themselves, "Am I being misled?" This capability to scrutinise information critically is a skill that those in the higher echelons of society are typically well-trained in. This caller perfectly illustrates the issue: they present a problem and then suggest a drastic solution, such as banning foreigners, without demonstrating the critical thinking necessary to fully understand and consider the facts.

@@sod16 Exactly. This is why Farage was so impactful. He was on every show addressing every problem with a one word reply "Immigrants". This served to abbreviate the issues that people wanted to discuss. And when you've only got seconds to ask a question on programs like QT, people use the short-hand language that is offered by the authoritative figures. Does that make sense?

James O'Brien was dishonest here. The caller said he thought people stuck on benefits were victims of tory immigration policy and James turned it round and accused him of saying the state of the economy was the fault of people on benefits.
@alfsmith493611 ай бұрын
He used his own argument against him and won.
@TheDMG4511 ай бұрын
@@alfsmith4936 It wasn't his argument though is my point. If you think someone is a victim of something, that's the opposite of thinking they are responsible for that thing. The caller may well be wrong to blame tory immigration policy for the state of the economy, but James should have addressed that argument, not attack him for something he didn't say.

If it is true that immigration strengthened the economy then why are we still doing so badly? I'm not saying it hasn't, but the premise is belied by everything that we all see in this country. You can't just say to people "but immigration strengthens the economy" when nothing about their lives has been improved while there has been a steep influx of people into the smaller regional cities and villages. "How the cake is sliced" implies that it is a lie that we need immigration, a lie that covers up for greedy people sharing so little of the cake to begin with. Not an unreasonable argument, widening wealth inequality is undeniable. The benefits of immigration are just adding to their pile, not ours.
