Breaking Through Ice WITHOUT Safety Equipment

I don't mean to imply that safety equipment is unnecessary, but a comfortability & calmness with ice water (and a plan for immediate shelter in the case of a breakthrough) are far more important to consider than having a life jacket and ice picks. Someone falling through bad ice is most likely to face tragedy by:
1. drowning quickly, if they panic and inhale water
OR
2. hypothermia long after the breakthrough, if they do not quickly get to warmth
Be safe by going slow with common sense and a chisel to check the ice before EVERY step.

This your second video on ice safety, if you can call Jay thinking it was a hot tub. I think you need to do one of these every ice fishing season. The river is scary. My friend went under the ice in the Thompson River at Kamloops, BC, when he was a kid. Luckily, he came up in open water.

Went rafting at Glacier park where the water was [glacier ice] cold, and they let us jump in to swim for a bit. I remembered your last break-through-the-ice video as I sat there for the first 20 seconds just gasping to catch my breath because of the shock of the cold. You said wait till the shock passes before trying to get out. I agree, after it passed it was much easier to swim for a minute or so then climb back in the raft. Thanks for sharing!

A couple years ago I fell through the ice into about 4 feet of water and my feet got stuck in the mucky bottom. That was scary cause it was really difficult to pull my feet up out of the muck and get myself up into the thin ice.

Hadn't considered falling through shallow..just assumed you could just push yourself out but doing alot of river fishing i totally understand getting stuck in the muck and it would add a unique challenge to getting out. I'd loose my boots for sure cause i wear them loose!

That happened to me on snowshoes the other day...probably only up to my knees but the snowshoes really got mucked up and it took awhile to slowly pry them out. I was along the edge of frozen swamp and this was a small area between a couple mounds. Didn't expect any significant water there. Boom, no warning.

Making a hole and jumping in isn’t how ice breaks on you, when you fall in its usually in between 2 big cracked sheets of ice collapsing in and you being in between falling in witch makes it difficult to climb up due to not having frozen stable ice to climb up on

Good video man. I went through a shallow pond this year. I sat in my shack for a few hours fishing. I did drill and check a lot of holes before deciding to fish it. Then while packing up my shack I went through right next to it in a spot that I didn't check. I felt really dumb. But I learned my lesson. That hard way. Could have been worse though.

I fell thru ice near the middle of a frozen pond during a blizzard with high winds. Honestly I wish I would have had the ice picks for reassurance. That said, ice water is extremely cold and will get your full attention in a matter of seconds. I was a bit unlucky as the ice kept breaking as I headed to the shore every attempt I made to slide horizontally onto the ice a piece would break off and I would toss it to the side and keep going. It’s not as easy at it looks, because your clothing now weighs 100lbs I was wearing coveralls carharts , boots and multiple layers of cloths. Except now that the cloths are just more wet weight. If you are alone, wear the ice picks. I made it to shore, I sat down there to regain my composure then my clothing started to freeze, I had to walk home next. By the time I got back and peeled off all my cloths my skin was bright red like I had taken a beating. Based on my experience I would definitely recommend the ice picks, don’t go alone if you can avoid it, make sure u know how thick the ice is, and don’t trust some lakes, ponds and rivers have warm springs that create weak areas of ice etc etc I love ice fishing I would go anytime but no one needs to die for it.
