Truly, I humbly say this is the finest live performance recording of this melancholy masterpiece. I wish Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, would hopefully be Blessed enough to hear it in their lifetime at least once. 🙏🏽

I am probably the least sentimental and romantic MF I know, but this song never fails to bring tears to my eyes, even after listening to it dozens of times over the years since it first came out. A true masterpiece, from a true master. And props to Graham Maby! As a fellow bass player, I'm a big fan.

Joe Jackson is a highly underrated musician. I have been enjoying his music for over 40 years. My wish is that more people would take the time to listen to his music, and appreciate its originality and quality.

I hope you've seen the music video by now, since it's been a year since your post. I'm not one to promote videos for songs, I believe the song is best when it's just the music, but in this case I believe the video is done So Well, that it's actually a Positive movement to see it every once in awhile. Whoever directed/edited/cast it, did an Outstanding job in catching So many nuances in the song. The video is almost Perfect. Well, actually to me, it is. Just like the song itself.

This is an incredible song. It has a haunting quality that most of my favorite songs do. That quality makes you recall hoping, being let down, and hoping again. Anyhow, I'd never seen a video of Jackson live. I really got an impression of him as a talented performer. He is doing things with his delivery that emphasize the talent he was born with and reveal the skill he has acquired.

Remember how it followed on the heels of "Steppin' out", also from the "Night and Day" album. This song and that one lived up to the album's title.

Have to give a shout out to Joe's band. Awesome musicians, each of them.

Tell you what my heart wishes I could have seen with this particular song and live version (and I'm sure even JJ would be shaking his head "no")...a duet, at this tempo, with his "Happy ending" singing mate Elaine Caswell. A tremendous singer as herself could control her vocal power, I believe, and could have sung this with the same soft melancholic unease that Mr. Jackson does here. Laugh at me if you will, but if it could have happened, with these backing musicians (love the lady electronic keyboard player and lady percussionist he had at this time) I think it could have been fascinating. Just my .02, but I'll take this one as well.
