Mike Proposes A New Plan | Gloves Off | Better Call Saul

Mike identifies flaws in Nacho’s plan and suggests an alternative approach.
Season 2 Episode 4 - Gloves Off: Although his television ad soliciting clients for the Sandpiper class action suit is a resounding success, Jimmy is grilled by the senior partners at Davis and Main about why he produced it without permission. Though admitting there's ample reason to fire him, Clifford Main refuses Jimmy's resignation, but warns that he's going to be scrutinized closely from now on. When Jimmy tries to alert Kim, Howard and Chuck are busy pressing her about the commercial. So after she admits to having seen it but doing nothing to stop it from airing, Kim is demoted to work in the document review room. Meanwhile, Nacho offers Mike $50,000 to kill his drug cartel partner, Tuco. When Jimmy offers to plead her case to Howard, Kim warns him against doing anything more to jeopardize her future at the firm. Certain that Chuck is behind her demotion, Jimmy confronts him at home, accusing him of going after Kim to force him to leave the legal profession in exchange for saving her job. Meanwhile, after meeting to buy a rifle for the hit, Mike decides against shooting Javi. But when he delivers the news to Nacho, he offers another plan to take care of Javi for half the price. As Nacho and Javi make their weekly collections at a diner, Mike calls the police from a nearby payphone to report a fight in the parking lot. When Mike drives up and bumps into his prized car, Javi angrily confronts him about the dent and follows him inside to demand that he pay cash for the damage. When Mike refuses and offers to get his insurance company involved instead, Javi explodes. But as Javi grabs Mike's wallet and beats him senseless, the police arrive to arrest him for robbery and assault – just like Mike planned.

Realistically Mike should have just killed Tuco, but story-wise since Tuco is in Breaking Bad, he has plot armor til he takes a bullet from Hank.

realistically its nacho best interest there to not raise suspitions with his boss being shot, putting him in as potential suspect, making cartel maybe look into nacho and find out about his side business. plot armor or not, it would be just dumb to kill a cartel member like tuco - hector and other salamancas probably wouldnt stop till they found out who did it (as we find out later in breaking bad where walter nearly gets chopped to pieces by the twins, and later hank almost gets killed in a public space during daytime. cartel dont care and they will go crazy if they seek revenge for their family member). also as in the story - when tuco is out of picture, lalo comes in and he is much worse to deal with than tuco i guess nacho meeting lalo was unfortunate event but i imagine you cant walk out of cartel business just because your boss/partner was put in jail. maybe if you are a low level drug dealer its possible, but nacho was tuco right hand man and he knows too much for them to just let him quit

This is a case of Half measures, over and over again. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are full of these examples where the protagonists, due to ego, fear, greed or letting themselves be carried away by emotions, do not want to take extreme measures.

I've come to like BCS slightly more than Breaking Bad. Particularly when it comes to character dialogue. Breaking Bad was like the edges and framework of the puzzle, BCS became the completed center to tie it all together. Heisenberg truly would never have been what he became without Saul and the events in this universe that preceeded Walt and Jesse's partnership. Which probably means Walt is killed by the twins without Gus diverting them to Hank.

As I watch these clips of Breaking Bad, and I've never watched entire episodes or the series, I wonder who is supposed to be the protagonist and antagonist in this drama? Or is the intention to blur the roles? The bad guys are good and the good guys are bad?

I'd totally suggest giving Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, (The Sequel which is technically a prequel) a watch, the series is really good. The show tends to blur the lines a lot on morality though, which is what makes it so good. Morally dubious people can end up doing good things, and good people can end up doing bad things, all for different reasons.

Tony Montana is the protagonist of Scarface, for example, while Sosa is the antagonist, even though they're both criminals. It's Tony's story so he's the protagonist, Sosa is his enemy so he would be the antagonist.
