A team of physicists affiliated with several institutions in South Korea is claiming to have created the elusive room-temperature/ambient-pressure superconducting material. Their work has not yet been peer reviewed. They have posted two papers on the arXiv preprint server. Is it truly a breakthrough or misinterpreted data?

I stayed on the KIST, Seoul campus for a few months around 5 years ago. The institute is definitely well-respected and their scientists are working on the cutting edge. They are also very well funded and the institute itself led the development of South Korea into a technologically advanced nation. All this makes me inclined to believe that the researchers are not necessarily falsifying their results as some have claimed. But at the same time I'd like to wait and see what conclusion the peer review process settles on before I can put more faith in this new discovery. Perhaps this research brings us a step closer to viable room-temp superconductors, if not the exact desired outcome.

Notice the low current they used. This probably means that while it’s resistance is low, it’s not zero, so thermal runaway probably occurs at higher currents and loses it superconductivity.

National Lab just modeled what could be happening to the material. Copper atoms were percolating into a crystal structure and replacing lead atoms, causing the crystal to strain slightly and contract by 0.5%. This allowed it to be superconductive in specific areas. This is still huge news and will lead to more research in crystal structures.

The biggest thing I noticed skimming one of the papers is that the critical current was only around 250mA at 27 Celsius, or 140mA at 47 Celsius. There's a few applications which could be useful at such a low current, but maglev trains, fusion, and MRI machines all require much more current to do anything useful. It may be possible to make a Josephson junction for a room temperature quantum computer at such a low current which is very significant or some tiny motors. I hope other labs can reproduce the results.

Just the method of malforming the lattice by squeezing copper into the structure is going to prompt a surge of research, even if this particular version's cc isn't that high.

It's very intriguing, even if not true superconductivity. It may lead to alternate technology that still improves performance to some degree.

If this is real, one of the greatest invention of mankind after the discovery of wheels , just "behind" the invention of anti-gravity like UFO. Even though if not superconductor , weak-resistance still benefit the industry.

I think they released their superconducter statement too early. Because of personal reasons i guess. It is not a superconducter, it is even worse than ordinary conductors. But it is a new method to reach superconductors at room temperature. This is the important point here. I think they need another 6 month or presumeably longer to show that the material turns into a RT SC. It is really exciting work and i hope we can implement this tech as soon as possible. It is like inventing the steam engine or ottomotor. RT SC will be the center of the next (or already new) industrial revolution besides AI and 3D printing.

For sure, National Labs is replicating LK-99 in simulation, there is something to it. Another lab in china says they are only in trace amounts of superconducting impurities. Either way, it is looking more like a big step for RT superconductivity even though it's not officially a complete superconductor yet.

I want to believe. I think it would need to be manufactured under very high pressure, much like how a diamond is made. Pressure and Cooling are the only proven ways to superconduct.

With the commercial potential that such material would have, my guess is that hundreds of research groups are going to jump on this and not long thereafter reach the conclusion that it was too good to be true.

exactly. And it's still cool, a new diamagnetic material is always a welcome discovery. They should not have leaked the premature papers though, to avoid all the humiliation that followed.
@hm5142
@hm5142 10 ай бұрын
I read the paper, and it does a lot more than demonstrate diamagnetism. It shows high electrical conductivity, a sharp transition from a normal state to whatever this is, and the transition temperature drops as the ambient magnetic field is increased. So it has a wide range of behaviors that look like superconductivity. Will be interesting if to understand the mechanism. I would not assume that the characteristics of the particular materials they have are the best we will be able to do with this class of materials - remember, this is a first successful test and there will be many knobs to turn to modify the behavior.
@rollerr
@rollerr 10 ай бұрын
Do you really think one of Korea's top material scientists would mistake this for a diamagnet? He's intimately familiar with them, he even wrote a peer reviewed paper on diamagnetism. The entire thing could have a number of problems, it's unlikely that 'they're just mistaking it for a diamagnet'.

Computers are already exponentially faster. Because Moore's Law is an exponential curve. Unless by "exponentially faster" you actually mean multiple times faster. Exponential curve is defined over multiple points, not two points.

If it's in the quantum physics realm then it's not that simple, room temperature super conductors can be a boon and also a bane because they can pull several unwanted things including personal possessions from people's pockets and undergarments!.

I have a misunderstanding. why is everyone aiming to achieve superconductivity at room temperature? for me this term creates confusion. why superconductivity at a temperature that can increase? ? and why only that? there are different situations when the temperature exceeds the normal value of a room. in the desert the temperatures are much higher. in space, even at the level of the earth's orbit or on the moon, the temperature is over 200 degrees Celsius. will we have superconductivity at that temperature too? or even worse, on Venus, at over 500 degrees Celsius.

There's also been a claim from around 2019, from a United States Navy Scientist. He has a patent filed for a "Flying Craft using an inertial mass reduction propulsion device" - aka - The U.S.A. UFO Mr. Pias, I believe his name is, also has multiple other parents pertaining to said Craft. However they have been separated into individual patents, so you may have to do a bit of digging on the U.S. patent site. One such patent happens to be a room temperature superconductor along with the details on how it works and a description of how it's made. If you know anything about superconductivity head on over and get learned ..

Just remember some of those UFOs can do sharp turns. Person I believe the sharp turn is too fast for a human pilot. It would cost physical harm inside the body to do such a quick maneuver. They're probably remote controlled.

All mass loses heat as decay. Mass occupies space as neutralized resistance within it. All mass is thermaldynamics in equalization to resistance. Resistance in mass is neutralized. Time is the interactions of exchanges in occupational space point to point. All mass breaks down as forward momentum pressure in passing through occupational space. You can disrupt thermaldynamics, but cold resistance is constant as cold space. Heat is the cosmic speed limit in resistance as a constant cosmic speed limit in and out of entanglement of mass. Mass in its present time is at maximum momentum velocity in resistance. Conservation of maximum momentum velocity in resistance at present. Hydrogen is cooler than helium. Helium occupies more space, which requires more thermaldynamics flowing in equalization to cold resistance. Physics works.
