I was a British citizen living through the last 8 yrs of apartheid in SA and in so many ways it was worse than you have described including biological weapons programs including using pharmaceuticals to keep the population docile. A large number of isreali citizens including many extremely wealthy ones were also part of that system and have now moved to Israel including a school friend I can no longer bring myself to speak to. Most SA military equipment was actually Western built & re-assembled in SA under a new name. The SA Army conducted the Angola war with Western/Israeli "advisers", etc. Most U.N votes against Apartheid over the decades had over 100 countries for and two against. The 2 against: The U.S and Israel. But yes, once the U.S stopped direct support in 1985 and itself engaged in sanctions against SA due to sustained pressure, the repeal of Apartheid took 5 years.

You forget the battle of Cuito Cannavale. The apartheid government forces were defeated by Cuban, Swapo and ANC forces. They were surrounded, and the only option was to accept defeat or die fighting. Simultaneously, the fall of the Berlin Wall also did not give the ANC many options. They had to think of negotiations, there was a stalemate
