Thank you. I had a single mastectomy and developed a recurrence three years later just below the scar line. It was a very small looking thing that I immediately had it checked out and got a biopsy. They determined that it was the breast cancer that now showed up on my chest wall and We did the surgery to remove it and I had chemo and radiation because after my original mastectomy I didn’t have any follow up treatment at all no chemo, no radiation just tamoxifen. So now it has been almost 3 years since the recurrence and I am hoping that it won’t show up a third time. I don’t know how frequently that happens which is why I think about it quite often coming back a third time.

People who have had a recurrence have often told me that they worry about having yet another one. It sounds as if the treatment of your recurrence was effective. I have many patients who have had only one recurrence and gone on to live normal, cancer-free lives. It's not easy to sit with the uncertainty, however. Thank you for writing and sharing your experience.

I was first diagnosed and treated for triple negative breast cáncer three years ago. I has surgery and chemo and then radiotherapy. I had a local reacurrence in the under arm, I had four affected lymph nodes. I has surgery and then chemo. I was not given an radiotherapy this time around. Now I can't stop thinking that I should have gotten a second opinión
@yerbba2 жыл бұрын
It sounds really hard to have regret about the past. Giving radiation therapy again in a previously radiated area is not generally done within a short time window because the skin and other tissues will be severely affected. We can re-radiate if absolutely necessary but have to be very careful. The further away someone is (for example, a couple of decades) the safer it is to retreat with radiation therapy.

It’s my understanding from reading various clinical studies, that the initial chemotherapy drugs can also cause DNA damage which can in and of itself cause secondary cancers.
@yerbba2 жыл бұрын
The main secondary malignancy after chemotherapy for breast cancer is treatment-related leukemia. This is exceptionally rare but is no doubt the result of chemotherapy. Most oncologists have seen a few cases of secondary leukemia out of hundred and hundreds of people they've treated. Whilst we would never want to trivialize a secondary cancer, the benefits of chemotherapy vastly outweigh the risk of secondary cancers in the majority of people advised to receive chemotherapy. We do try to avoid chemotherapy if there is little or no benefit because of this and other rare side effects.

Chemo and hormone therapy are toxins that we pump into our bodies. That's why they make us so sick. Of course poisons are going to have negative effects. Doctors play it down. But they make money on extended treatment, so what can we expect?

Got diagnosed at this year at 40 years old. Triple positive ki-67 of 60%. I was lucky that no lymph nodes were affected and the tumor was under 1cm. How likely do these tumors spread. I had a double mastectomy and a total hysterrctomy.

It’s great that the lymph nodes weren’t affected and your tumor was small. The prognosis will depend on quite a few things that you haven't mentioned, such as the actual size, the ER and PR status, the HER2 status, and the grade. It is likely your medical team can help explain your prognosis. Thanks for watching.

The first step is to obtain a piece of tissue through a biopsy before anything else. Lumps can be from many things. She's fortunate to have you helping her through an anxious time.

Just had a biopsy this morning of a lump near my mastectomy scar. Had a double mastectomy two years ago followed by taxol/herceptin (had 3 tumors-2 were er/pr+ and one was triple positive). This lump is in the same area the triple positive tumor was. Was on Tamoxifen for about 6 months, but discontinued after developing a blood clot. Hoping this isn't a recurrence, but the image on ultrasound had a very irregular shape, so thinking that it is. I wonder if I'll have a different chemo or the same as last time. I assume I would get radiation since I had none originally.
@yerbba2 жыл бұрын
I wish you weren't going through this. You've already been through a lot. Yes, radiation therapy is likely to be part of your treatment plan. Depending on the ER, PR, and HER2 status, your chemotherapy may be similar or different. Sorry not to be more helpful while you wait for results.
@lisameeks49642 жыл бұрын
@@yerbba Unfortunately, it is once again triple positive idc. It measured 1.5 cm. I guess I'm thinking that perhaps these tumor cells are possibly resistant to Taxol and/or Kanjinti ? When I found the tumor, it had only been 11 months since my last Kanjinti treatment. Maybe I'm wrong, but that seems like a pretty fast recurrence. It really worries me. I go see my oncologist in 3 days. I'm just afraid if I get the same chemotherapy regimen, the tumor will just come back again.
@lisameeks49642 жыл бұрын
I know I said herceptin in my original post. I usually say that because a lot of people haven't heard of Kanjinti. Not sure why I did it in a post to you. Just habit, I guess.

Good day Doc! After my unilateral right breast mastectomy last Feb. 2020 and did not undergo chemo due to pandemic I recently noticed a lymph nodes in my armpit. Does it mean it's a regional recurrence? Your response is highly appreciated. Thank you
@yerbba2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing. It's possible that the lymph nodes have cancer in them, but only a biopsy will tell for sure. If there is cancer in the lymph nodes, it is likely that you will be offered chemotherapy.

I was almost 22 years out from my DCIS dx when I was just diagnosed with IDC adjacent to lunpectomy site. Waiting for MRI and then surgery. How do they know if it's recurrent or new?
@yerbba2 жыл бұрын
Given the span of time between the DCIS and your newly-diagnosed cancer, this is most likely a new primary tumor. One way we can tell is by looking at both the DCIS and the invasive cancer under the microscope to see if the pattern of the cells is similar, but with DCIS, it may be hard to tell. All the best as you go through your treatment.

Triple negative breast cancer now spread to lungs..is it curable? Pls reply survivors..
@yerbba2 жыл бұрын
Once breast cancer has appeared in other parts of the body, we generally do not refer to cure. HOWEVER, people can survive a long time even if cancer is in the lungs. There are a lot of factors that are associated with life expectancy. Your medical team will be able to answer your questions about your prognosis with a lot more specific information because they know your particular case. Wishing you the absolute best.

My mom had stage three ER positive breast cancer. She chose homeopathic treatment instead of chemo. It spread to her lungs at the five year mark. She regretted not getting chemo. She took one round of chemo two months before she died, but it was too late. She passed nine months ago. She was my best friend, and my only family. I have no siblings. I’ll always wonder if chemo would’ve cured her. 😓

Is breast cancer recurrence curable if its detect early ???
@yerbba2 ай бұрын
There are two kinds of recurrent breast cancer, local and metastatic. Local recurrences are usually curable. Disease that has spread to other parts of the body is generally not considered curable.

For some people with metastatic (also called Stage IV) cancer, it is possible to live a long time without any evidence of cancer. For most people, the cancer will need some form of treatment indefinitely because we generally expect the cancer will appear again.

@yerbba2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing. A new cancer or the original cancer coming back can be extremely frightening. If the tumor is in the breast and there is no evidence that there are other places in the body where the cancer has spread, you are extremely likely to be cured. A lot of people find themselves more anxious after a second breast cancer. Make sure that you have someone with whom you can share your feelings and worries. Wishing you the best.
