My baby was born on February 25 and we have been breastfeeding since then. He had the perfect latch at first but now that we are home my breasts are hard in spots and I'm leaking alot. When he breastfeeds it is painful but when I remove the nipple to correct the latch, milk spills down his chin. I'm producing so much milk and he is definitely getting it (he's gained 6 oz in a day!) But it's just painful for me and I think it's because my latch isn't as good as it could be. He also falls asleep ALOT during feedings and I feed him once every hour with each breast for 5-8 minutes. Is this common for newborns? This too shall pass? I'm looking forward to seeing him sleeping through the night, last night was so hard on me I bought a pump and have been expressing the build up milk so that maybe during the night I can use this supply.

Such a great video! I'm a father to my 5 day old baby girl. It hurts me so much seeing my fiance in pain while breast feeding. We have been coached as much as possible while in the hospital on how to properly breast feed but nothing seemed to work. I took it upon myself (as both my baby and fiance were taking a nap) to do some research. Super glad I stumbled across this video! We just had a successful feeding with ZERO pain! Thank you so much Bridget!

My grandma says don't try too hard, she says take a deep breath and relax because baby will mirror your energy and stress can affect your breast milk. It's easier said than done, but she said it can help to remind yourself that you and baby are learning together, so you can even enjoy struggling and learning together

Try breastfeeding in a lying Position, you just have to Position the baby in the right height putting a towel or Something behind the babies back for Support and you can relax while breastfeeding. You can also try to find a lactation counselor to come to your house and help you( it is really worth the money!) I hope you find your way. It is sooooo much easier when you get the grip of it then feeding a bottle. I also had big problems breastfeeding my first child , the second child was a natural talent. Its not always you, sometimes the baby is lazy and needs you to put in extra effort to learn how to feed efficiently.

I need to say Thank you so much for this video!! Latching was a challenge from the beginning, my baby really struggled to latch at all and on the rarity she did latch, she didn't know how to stay on. I had endless midwifes offering contradicting advice and it became so overwhelming! Although I said I would quit trying many many times, I did continue to persist with nipple sheilds. At 8 weeks I found this video, and from then on my baby could latch! It was an incredible feeling. 6 months down the line now and still going well. My supply has never been able to catch up from the 8 week delay, so I combine feed, but I am so grateful I have been able to give her breast milk for part of her diet and comfort her that way!

I love all your videos Bridget! You help us pregnancy, labor & delivery, and postpartum ❤️ I wanted to touch on how you mentioned noisiness and clicking during a latch - amongst other things, this is a sign that baby has a tongue and/or lip tie that should be evaluated by a pediatric dentist for revision. My 3 week old had both a tongue and a lip tie revision, so we are working with an IBCLC to relearn a proper latch now that he has more lip and tongue mobility 😊❤️

I believe my baby might have that. She is 1 month now. I have seen a lactation consultant and latching still hasn’t improved. I mentioned lip or tongue tie and she doesn’t believe that is a problem. But I feel otherwise. Every feeding consists of nonstop loud clicking sounds. When I do manage to get a better latch around the areola my baby gags every time. She’s always hungry even after she eats too. Though she is gaining weight nicely.. Not to mention, she cannot latch properly on a bottle either, the same nonstop clicking sound problem. I’m very confused

I would love to see a video about how to fix a bad latch, I'm having trouble finding anything. I have watched and read all about how to have a good latch and I know that what my baby has now is a bad latch, but all the guides on how to do it correctly aren't helping. It's painful but I really want to continue and improve it, but feel like I'm out of resources. I've seen 2 lactation consultants already and am seeing another tomorrow to check for tongue and lip ties. How can I get baby to open his mouth wide if he doesn't do it on his own? Sometimes it seems like I get a good latch to start but then he pulls back so he's just on the nipple, what do I do? Things like that would be so helpful.

One thing I would like you to talk about is tongue ties and how they can affect baby’s latch and ability to drain the breast properly. Now that we have fixed our tie, these tips have been super helpful. I’m a third time mum, but first time breastfeeding with support. Baby is almost 2weeks old and she’s had more breastmilk than my second child. Who I only breastfed for 5 days due to fear from first experience. My first son had a really bad tongue tie like my third, but could never get him off the shield, and the lactation consultant put the fear in me that he wasn’t gaining enough weight, and I wasn’t aware of cluster feeding. So only went 6 weeks with him. My third is my last, and I really want to breastfeed for as long as possible. So thank you so much for this video.

Also, look into lip and tongue ties. Many lactation consultants and pediatricians are not trained to assess or clip them, so an ENT or a pediatric dentist would be your best bet. You may look for a Facebook group for ties local to you for good recommendations!
@KassiReyes4 жыл бұрын
Skylar Daniels many Lactation consultants are trained in helping to identify them, but it is true that an ENT or Dentist has to assess baby to give a diagnosis and “clip” if needed. I have a video on signs to help you identify signs if you may suspect your baby has a tongue tie.

The 1st 30-60 seconds hurts, 2. Milk squirts out or leaves his mouth in the first 30 seconds, 3. When he’s done my nipple is going white and looks like lipstick.. My right nipple more so but they both hurt and I’m worried he will soon rip them off 😢 any additional suggestions is much appreciated 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I've done ALL of this, we even went to see the lactation consultants at the hospital where I gave birth and they were stumped as to what's going on. I can get the lach most of the time but my little keeps pushing most of the nipple out with her tongue before even attempting to nurse. I don't have a forceful let down, but I do have an over supply. Apparently I'm doing everything right but she's got something going on that is making latching/staying latched really hard

Bridget, what do you recommend when your little one has the clicking sounds when nursing? My letdown is so fast and she drinks toooo fast and I can hear the air bubbles go to her tummy. She is a big guzzler! Even if I were to pump a few minutes to get some letdown, she will still nurse very fast and suck the daylights out. After 10-15 minutes or so she is in a milk coma. She wakes up to discomfort needing to burp/bubbles in her tummy. What can I do to help ease her/make her more comfortable/make nursing more enjoyable for her? Thank you, love your videos! Wish I would've found you prior to my pregnancy.

Great video! What are your feelings/thoughts about oral ties and latch? Baby boy 2 was born at 34 weeks and had a deep anterior and posterior tongue tie that we had revised, which has since partially reattached during the healing process and a very tight upper lip frenulum and 4 cheek ties two upper and two lower... we have not had any other work done on these ties even though it’s been heavily advised for our breastfeeding journey by and IBCLC and our CST chiropractor. Our boy is 9 weeks and has just finally started latching it’s been a long journey to start, but now I’m struggling with clogged ducts because it’s like I’m starting over. I don’t think at this point it’s necessary to had the ties revised because now he’s nursing, but I was just curious about what your opinions and or thoughts were on it

Hi Bridget! I am preparing for baby #2 and have been enjoying learning from your videos about breastfeeding. I do have a question for you though. With my first son the hospital seemed to push the fluids because of being at risk for having jaundice. However, my milk did not come in yet, so they kept bringing me formula to use until my milk came in. I would just like your opinion on what you would do if this was you? I am afraid this is going to happen again this time and I really do not want to give my baby any formula. How long did your milk take to come in? I’m on the same boat! Were you able to make it work without nipple shields?
@kayakalugin86442 жыл бұрын
How do you latch baby when they are used to the nipple shield already?? Right after we gave birth the lactation consultant said that my nipples were inverted or flat and so baby wasn't watching on but they did not inform me that it does not matter about the nipple size it matters about latching on baby to the areola but I wasn't informed on that. So now baby is 6 weeks old and used the nipple shield when I take it off mid nursing and she has a little bit of milk in her belly (so she won't be too fussy) I try to latch her to the breast but she doesn't want to latch on and gets really flustered and starts crying and turns red so I put the nipple shield back on and she eats fine. How do I watch her on the breast after her getting used to the nipple shield? My midwife said I have the technique down of holding her correctly, position of baby etc but I cry because I'm feeling discouraged that my milk will stop and won't ever latch her :(

Notes : Good latch - means no pain except initially, empty breast easily, wet diapers.. poor latch - sorry nipples throughout , lipstick shaped nipples, discoloration in nipples..Steps : 1) right time is quiet alert stage cues - eye contact, head bob, searching, lip smack..2) position - foot ball hold, front hold.. 3) don't support baby with ur shoulder, just relax ur shoulders n neck 4) don't have baby straight up n face side, their body should be aligned, tummy to ur tummy, 5) don't stretch up nipples to them 6) stimulate their philanthrum to make their mouth wide open, 7) if not compress ur breast to put their mouth 8)make sure their lips are fish liped aroubd areola 9) make sure they are able breathe with nostril properly.. patiently try n give it some time..

Last night I was crying because it was so painful to breastfeed my 5-week-old son. I was getting frustrated at him and immediately at myself for doing so. I was also getting fearful for putting him to breast due to the pain and was going to hire a breastfeeding consultant later today. This video is my Christmas miracle. I just had a good breastfeeding session. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much. You are an angel. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

This is so helpful! I’m nearly 32 weeks along and my first pregnancy. I have zero clue how to do any of this, so I really appreciate your video and suggestions. I’m watching all of your shows, and taking notes! Thank you again for making these accessible to all of us on your channel Bridget!

Hello Bridget, You are doing a wonderful job explaining and showing Mamas all the tips and techniques for a great latch. My children are 24 and 26 (and the time went so fast. I literally feel like they were babies last year!) and both times nursing was difficult. I went to a few "lactation consultants and didn't receive half of the info you are teaching Mamas today. You are adorable, well-spoken, and knowledgeable in your trade. I am a lay doula and lay postpartum doula now getting credentialed as well as certifications for Childbirth Educator and a Lactation Consultant. Currently, I am having a career change as I apply to Midwifery Schools to become a Midwife in my 50's. I've ALWAYS known I love ALL areas of the birth world but had no idea about the need and diversity for which Birthworkers are needed. Thanks again!

Thanks for the tips, I just have one more question - what about the waving and grabbing everything little hands? I have a hard time calming those and my baby gets frustrated by the time I position him on my breast

Great tips!! Back here with baby #5 to refresh my memory. With my first baby, I had many of these problems. It was SO painful. The thing that made the most difference for me was the “hamburger” tip and remembering to put as much of the areola in the baby’s mouth as I can. Also another thing that helped was if my breasts were too engorged to get a good latch was to express some milk first through pumping or by hand. That helped a lot with making a softer breast for baby.

Every time I try to breast feed or give her my breast she keeps crying and moving her head. She used to latch on so good when she was born and now she’s 4 months and I’ve been struggling trying to get her to latch on my breast

She probably needs to burp...or was crying too long and swallowed air before you got to her. Burp first and her down and then nurse. She also may be sensitive to your breastmilk from what you eat. An elimination diet and slowly add back in foods and watch her poops for mucus or green color. My sensitive baby I would dance with or bounce on birth ball while nursing.

If she's teething or sick that could be the cause as well. Holding baby kind of upright like they're standing helps a bit so that they don't get pressure in the ears....its hard to hold her that way but keep her tummy to your body and walk around a bit while doing it might help.

With my first son I stopped breastfeeding 2 weeks after he was born and eventually I regretted it. I was so overwhelmed and just gave up. I really want to exclusively breastfeed my second son because I remember all the regret and guilt that followed with my first. I'm motivated to follow through and I'm trying to gather as much information as I can to prepare myself

I heard with all positions, the baby shouldn't be on their back. For the football hold, the baby's belly should be facing your ribs.
