The weakest of the serie? Really? I personally think that BoF3 might actually be the best one. I have a bias towards BoFII because it's the first RPG I have ever played, and thus, will eternally be one of my favorite RPG ever, but even I can admit that Bof3 and 4 are better. Rei might be my favorite character of the whole serie!

BoF 3 has the greatest design and gameplay of the series, by far! But that’s it. It’s expected with the tech advantages and new platform etc. Story wise it sucks. Even weaker than the generic but effective plot of 1. Its OST is better than 1 but < 2.
@suiken31492 жыл бұрын
@@th6410 BOFII is pretty primative in terms of gameplay. The skill system of BOF3 craps on BOFII's simplistic combat. Plus the mini games, while some are mandatory are quite fun and its fishing game is the best in the series. BOFII's town system was also improved on the existence of the Fairy Village. And Master system is also cool.

@@th6410 No but the overall experience of III trumps II anytime. And the story only sucks if you don't relate to Ryu's childhood curiosity in the first half. And it is the first story in the series to cross the grey morality since Myria isn't inherently bad neither was her intentions. She isn't out there to set the world on fire like your generic villains. In fact, she protects it.
@th64102 жыл бұрын
@@suiken3149 The story sucks because it's not a coherent one, with no start and no end. The main drive for Ryu's journey which is to find his newfound family, while coincidentally discovering his trueself, only to face his family in a fated dragon fight is just all over the place, convenient and incoherent in my opinion. I might be too harsh here, but the way I see it, a solid story, interesting or not, must have its start and end point be linked which is not the case here. Your point about Myria being neither good or bad is ... also neither good or bad of a plus point. Some might find it interesting, some might not. Overall, yes I agree the experience of PLAYING the game is the best among all 4. I even think it has the best Ryu but I refuse to recognize its weakest part - the story.

Literally everything you pointed as bad in this game is everything that makes it my favorite of the series. Nina begins as an annoying child who later develops into Ryu's most loyal partner. Let's remember that she commanded Wyndian's police into the dismounting of the Black Market of Syn City, so she had quite a evolution here. Nina's character as a child also points out the slow fall of Wyndian Empire, as their kings weakens in moral and wisdom (which Nina seems to pursue on her adulthood, frequently been repressed by her parents until her final banishment). So, great plot development over here! Also, Nina can easily become the second best character with a few development. My favorite party personally was Ryu/Rei/Nina, just crushing everything with her powerful spells and also atributing her boost and healing skills. The "examine" feature to learn skills was very much fun to me, because it sets up a new challenge in which you have to figure out what triggers enemies into using certain spells. Also, th world map is just gorgeus. It was a very nice improvement over the past games of the series for me

Most Nina builds emphasize INT and AP but neglect her other strong point, her high AGI. Put her under Meryleep for a while and she'll eventually become even faster than Rei. Spellcasters benefit GREATLY from those EX turns, even moreso than physical characters. Her high AGI, AP pool, and the Resist skill can also make her into a shockingly effective tank. As for Peco, start at Level 1, learn Bunyan's skills, then put him on Fahl on point in attack formation and watch him clean house!

I was stuck on that one section where you search for parts scattered around a ship throughout most of 2003 because I just couldn't find this one missing piece tucked away in an obscure and poorly-lit corner, and there was no KZbin back then to help.

I hated B&S with a passion. I remember levelling as best I could to try and beat Balio and Sunder on the bridge, so many futile moments, so much wasted time. Once I got through the first half of game and Rei came back as a BEAST it just made me play it on mornings before school, cranking those levels. Eeeevery character was memorable. Frickin Bunyan, the Yggdrasil, B&S, I loved that Momo made it to BoF4 too. I honestly don't think I have enjoyed and played a game repeatedly as much as this until Pokemon and then FFX. I disagree with Nina being bad. She's a Grim Reaper. Second highest Agl, Strong Int, and group targeting spells allows her to wipe out entire enemy groups with one or two spells. Often before the enemies even get to attack. She's the single best party member for dealing with random encounters. That being said, she has terrible HP and Def. There's bosses that can literally one shot her (don't take her to fight the Elder). She's the worst party member for boss fights. If you know when and how to use her, you'll get plenty of mileage out of the powerful mage.

I actually didn't mind Nina. I thought it made more sense that she was a naive princess rather than a fully capable princess. I enjoyed using her magic for leveling like Typhoon or Ice Blast on bosses and Vulcans. Also, she's a great sponge for master skills if you don't want to plug any other characters on to those masters and ruin stats. The only thing I didn't like about her was her HP and defense, but with a little commitment you can get around that with life shards and proteins. Proteins come super quick from vulcans :). Yeah, magic starts to become rather meh as you progress, but she's a good AoE overall and does okay if you build and equip her accordingly. Personally I didn't care for Momo because she's blah with magic unless you teach her Dies' skills and her physical attack misses too often for me to stay sane. Bottom line, everyone uses Ryu, Garr, Rei, or Peco... so it's whatever. :)

However analyzing the actions of god, who was a genocidal sociopath afraid of those with power equal to her own, was a profound experience to have when I was a teenager. Garr was a fallen paladin who lost his faith in god, which really struck me as a unique and fascinating thing to observe in a game.

Examples would be: bof3 Ryu. He has the best healing magic and can transform. The problem is, he should really be second tier healer, with Momo being best. For Chrono trigger, Marle is supposed to be your healer, but has no multi heal spell. Frog and robo do though... I'd have made her cure 2 spell multi, and removed one of robos. Frog would get cure, and I think that'd balance it better. For wild arms 2, Tim..... He's utterly broken. Lilka becomes near useless in battles because Tim gets a super fast multi healing spell, plus spells that hit multiple enemies. Lilka gets upgrades, but you can get Tim's as soon as you get a new medium. I still like these games, just feel that these things hold them back. I don't want ultra powerful characters. This is the only BoF game I've played and i loved it. Well until I got to the desert part and got lost. I can't remember if i ever finished the game or not. I do know it needs a remaster or a port to ps4. Maybe do a BoF collection and have all of them in it.

Best game of the series for me

Good story, even better soundtrack. Pretty meaty/lengthy game too, even though the water gathering well quest and the obnoxious desert towards the end are cringeworthy, lol. Too bad the BoF series kinda fell off after this. Review Suikoden II if you haven't already, fantastic game!

You must be joking about it being the weaker in the series! This is widely regarded as the BEST Breath of Fire game. I would have to agree its the best and I played Breath of fire 2 first (played and beaten them all, multiple endings included)! In order it goes: 3, 2, 4, 1, 5. The fifth game is fine, it just doesn't need to be called breath of fire (as it had very little to do with the series). Call the game something else and remove it from the series (just like the SOLO Star Wars movie). 4 is honestly an excellent game, but feels very removed from the series story and lore wise. It still looks and plays like a Breath of Fire game, it just separates itself from the others by comparison. 1 is still a fun game to play, but extremely generic, with a bland and underdeveloped story. 2 is the MOST RAW feeling of the games and that's to its credit. It feels like a nice mix of final fantasy 6 or Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals meets Breath of Fire. Beautiful music, fleshed out and interesting characters, wonderful world map, and a story that is deep, dark, and ruthless. 3 has a more light-hearted approach but matches up to the quality of 2 in virtually every way, including music, character development, world map, and a very rich story that has so many ups and downs. Characters die unexpectedly in both games that solidifies a serious tone to them. Breath of Fire 3 edges out 2 as the better game because of a much more polished and well rounded presentation. There is so much more personality to it as well. 4 is one that I truly want to revisit again. It was such an interesting take on the series and I bet it could have been in the running for the best title if it had longer in production to do some edit's and tie it into the series better (make it feel more like a Breath of Fire game (especially the world)).

The music in the game is pretty good (although its forest theme sounds like it was ripped out of Chrono Trigger, but, hey, might as well copy from the best), the graphics are solid by PS1 standards, and I like the dragon transformations...but that's about all the praise I have for the game. It's possibly my least favourite Breath of Fire, and I definitely do not consider it one of the better PS1 games (it's probably in my bottom five of the 25 or so PS1 RPGs I've played). I think the developers attempted some neat ideas and they were definitely ambitious, so I don't fault them for trying, yet I don't think the actual product turned out well. In particular, I can't stand many of the dungeons in the game, with the absurd lighthouse fetch quest marathon and the Desert of Death being some of the most painful I've encountered in any RPG (dungeons have to be really bad for them to remain so memorable to me when I've played through a game only one time). At least a lot of other people enjoyed the game more than I did.

Idk what this guy is talking about when he said one of the weakest of the series. BoF3 ISSS the Best of the series by far.. one of the best rpgs on ps1 too.
@horrorvictim4 жыл бұрын
Weakest in the series is BoF 6 the *cringe* mobile game...servers shut down cause no one was playing it and for good reason. I'd cut Nina some slack here, she was a child and she gets better.
@kodytiffany56864 жыл бұрын
Lets just say that I hate Nina with a passion. every game shes their taking up space and even if her magic is good I hate this winged vermin. 3 may have had the least enjoyable version but 4/2/1 (the order I played the others) did not help her case. She always feels like a burdern placed on the player to handicap the team and hijack the story. I also do not like her look, though I honestly can't tell you why. Just the first impression of her was in game 3 that I played first, game 4 was not better. Why couldn't it be ray or Tepo was in all of them?

I wish we could get this series on PC, and since the publisher is Capcom, there's at least a SLIGHT chance, unlike Suikoden whose publisher is Konami thats too busy with Pachinko machines.

yeah. they released it on PSP, but that game 30fps while original is 60fps. you can feel the difference and playing it and the 16:9 feels more stretched image than a native image. They could remaster it if they wanted too

Suikoden 2 is the best game ever made imho
@suiken31492 жыл бұрын
This comment didn't age well. Konami is about to release Suikoden remasters on PC, while Capcom being the crap they are, is still milking Resident Evil to death.
