Instead of a timeline, here's my two cents: It's kinda like a bike riding metaphor. They started out with a tricycle. Then, they upgraded to a real bike, but used training wheels. Finally, they're on just the two wheels. After that, they decided to backpedal a bit, and ride on a slightly different path--parallel to the previous one, but off to the side. That's how they ended up crashing into a bus. With the previous owner dead, some dumbass decided to try and ride the wreckage that was once considered a decent bicycle, but it spontaneously exploded, and the bike was never seen again.

BoFIV holds such a special place in my heart and childhood. I traded Chrono Trigger! for it. Chrono Trigger! The opening animation really sucked me into the world and I would fantasize daily about the life and battles there. Ten years ago, I had hoped and prayed for some kind of faithful continuation to this series. Now, all I can do is reminisce on just how much this series carried me away.

Touching on the desert theme, there is one interesting fact I'd like to point out: In the two BoF games in which the world was NOT dominated by desert (BoF 1 and 2), there was a place the party can visit called SkyTower, which in both games served as a type of weather control device. In the desert-dominated setttings, SkyTower is notably absent. Just a little tidbit to think about.
@stevenmorton298
@stevenmorton298 4 жыл бұрын
@Helen Davis Actually, it was but it went by a different name. In BoF 1 it was called Spyre and you had to beat the boss (Mote) there in order to thaw out the town of Spring. If you look close its position on the World Map relative to SkyTower's position in BoF 2, it occupies the same general area. In both games it was basically a weather control device.

I'd also like to add that in BoF IV, I'm pretty sure that Deis states the Endless aren't actually gods and are from another world/dimension; they just took on specific forms and powers based on how they were summoned, so it's possible they're all not even from the same universes and that's why they all have such weird/different forms.. but that last part's just a theory...

Fou Lu and Ryu (IV) are indeed dragons. Don't let that Fiendish looks deceive you as they transform into complete dragon when they cast breath attacks. I think they were specifically made that way due to hardware constraints

Such a great analysis -- I also started off with BoF III...which is by far my favorite in the series. It's a shame where it eventually ended up but seeing Capcom's recent track record with series such as Resident Evil...perhaps we can hold a little hope that they could revisit this gem of a series and do it proper justice.

Enlightening fact that only now I actually care to think about (I was so young at the time). Thanks, Myra. I remember Momo said something in 4 that she is confused, and state that she might be in another dimension. Hinting that 3 and 4 is in close timeline but different world. I personally love the series because of side characters rather than the main himself, especially 3 and 4, Momo and the Dog swordman(forgot his name) are my favorite, but I love all of them. And I actually don't know the existence of 6. LUL.

You're selling the 4th entry short here. From the Joseon influences to the Taoist undertones, this parallel dimension (pretty much confirmed by Momo) was an ideal set-up for the og creators to explore newer (deeper) themes and a fresh new take on aesthetics, without going full BOF5 and completely make a muck of it -- I still cannot fathom how they ever thought adding a timer would be a good idea... The journeys and mythos, not the obvious twist, were its foci, e.g., Fou-lu's tragic nadir and disillusionment was above and beyond most of what previous entries had offered; and Yuna's badassery reached new heights when he gave the middle finger in the end to those who craved bloody revenge 😎. Unfortunately, being as it was rushed out (plus all the censored content) only led to skimpiness on content and it being too easy; an overall incomplete gem. EDIT: Speaking of aesthetics, you should really do a whole video regarding the *awesome* OSTs this once great series blessed us with. Chop chop!

This is a great recap (coming here after playing BOF IV)! My own view is that BOF IV is a prequel for 3 main reasons: (1) that at the end of the game the dragon/nature 'gods' lose their power and live out their lives amongst the people; (2) Deis is summoned into the world, as you point out - it's her origin story; and (3) Yuna escapes to continue his twisted 'experiments'. Regarding (1), the de-deified dragon people mingle with the other peoples and eventually become the Brood, and regarding (2) Deis isn't being literal when she calls Myria 'sister' - she's referring to the fact that Myria is, like her, an Endless, though one created by man. The fact of (3) is a nice setup for the rest of the series. Obviously there are a bunch of interpretations, but this one makes the moost sense to me.

I always saw it as Endless Ones are revered as they existed for a long while. Yuna wanted to make a fullblown God and Nina's Sister is the result(poor girl). Deis was a Natural Endless One, I consider it as her possessing someone before. The previous host died but has gained a portion of Deis power and had her body slightly altered to accomodate her when he host was still alive. Yuna by some stroke of luck found the remains, analyzed it but got insane being exposed to its secrets. He decided to create one infusing his unwilling host with it alongside other genes. Demons, Fou-lu's DNA(Blood, Hair, etc.). It was to much for the girl she resulted in what we were shown. She decided to kill herself which is implied. However, while her soul left her body a new conciousness was born of her experimentation. Encompassing her pain, anger, etc. This gave birth to Myria. Deis sensing this felt a connection so she choose to stay, in her staying she granted the people the ability to fend against the goddess Myria if she turned bad which she did. This resulted in Wyndians having the ability to turn into birds and Ryu's descendant to retain their Dragon Abilities. Down the line the Clan separated into the Light and Dark Dragon Clans and started BoF1.

Sorry, my uncle was hospitalized due to stroke. I have no Online Access and my uncle sadly didn't want to sleep for the whole night. The only source I had were the games. First in BoF 4 Deis said that she had no body and was summoned by the Fou Empire. Going back with Fou-Lu and Ryu being separated into two different conciousness, their summoning was done differently. Abbess stated they never summoned Ryu, the Empire did. Considering how messed up the Empire was and the fact Deis never stated when and how she was summoned just who did, the possibilities are endless. Deis, due to a botched summoning either was summoned only in Spirit Form or her Physical Form is unable to accomodate her powers. TBC.

cont. I will just say her soul for short. Her soul definitelly searched for a medium/vessel. She found out what happened, how she came to BoF4's world and learned everything she can about it and the world. Now, because said vessel is not from Chek it had to adapt specially since it was done in a long cycle. With how crazy Yuna was, I find it unlikely he never had a master/teacher who was just as mad. Yuna's predecessor hunted her, the vessel died and Deis' soul travelled and in the future possessed Ershin the Armor. Back to the Empire Yuna's predecessor did a lot of research, meaning Hex Canorade was made, met Yuna who was a man of faith albeit heretical. Taught Yuna whose madness for knowledge grows and becomes the Ass that he is. Elina, by some bad luck garners Yuna's attention and was then experimented. Hence with my first pist Elina became Myria. Myria in BoF1 has wings, so was she in BoF3. My other reference was Myria was shown hovering young Ryu and calling his name in BoF3. Now look at it as this(although this is only how I remembered the game, definitely need to replay), BoF4 Ryu left the King's Sword on Elina's bed. This is a show of Mercy Kill, Myria still feels thankful for the gesture despite forgetting it. BoF1 Ryu stopped BoF1 Myria. BoF1 Myria had Light and Dark Dragons fight, got stopped by Ryu. Came BoF3, she had Dragons killed to near extinction, controlled Teepo hence another Light vs Dark Dragon scenario. If we connect her other motivation in BoF3, I saw it as she has existed in a Dessert filled world with abominations caused by its inhabitants(Hex, etc.). Finally, Myria said something along the lines of My God...Tell me what I must do.(can't remember the exact dialouge) when defeated. Judging how BoF4 has Endless Ones as Gods and are worshipped(Wyndia and Wind Dragon) it fits.

two things : the women in 3 was not ninas mother ... thats the kinds royal guard ( knight in golden armor) the mother can be found sick in bed ( when nina is a child ) and in a blue dress in the second visit . there are more people with wings in wyndia ( even big ones ) a old butler and a scientist inside the castle and another outside the castle

15:32 There is another pice of information to consider in the theory that the Ryu and Nina from the first game ended up together. The females in the Dragon Clan of BoF2 gain wings with Ryu’s mother looking indispensable from Nina’s Bird clan. His sister also gains bat-like wings showing that the link to the Bird Clan started to thin out. So the Ryu and Nina from BoF1 ended up thinning out the Great Bird transformation by the time BoF2 started. Keep in mind that the Nina in BoF2 meets the Nina from BoF1 in the basement of the Castle in Windland in order to obtain the Great Bird transformation. The original Nina apologizes to her because she “fell in love with a man from another clan”. This could be a reference to the first Ryu which would explain why the females in the Dragon Clan had wings.

My personal fave of the series was IV, from ground-breaking duel storylines to fully flesh out both protagonist and antagonist, the option to choose which character is in the right, and was the first to allow you to navigate the world map without random battles (unless you choose to)! You have The whole plot of a world on the brink of war and Nina getting a whole story of finding her sister was worth it all! BoF2 was also pretty awesome, plot-wise. The order I would go with is 4-1-2-3 and we forget about 5 or the really unliked 6! Also, the desert in III was actually really easy as long as you always face and follow the North Star, especially when getting turned around after any battles). Learned that on a second play through when I missed that dialogue option with someone at the oasis 🤷🏼‍♂️

Yea I remember that shit, the copy I still have from childhood, the guy in the camp tells you to go east. I remember following his directions to the T, and never got to the other side of the desert and wondered wtf is going on here? I literally thought it was me doing it wrong. The only reason I got past is because I just decided, without thinking really, to go west and follow the directions, and I STILL remember when I made it through, thinking.... I swear that guy said to go east..? Am I remembering that wrong..? Then playing the greatest hits version, the guy says go west and I CLEARLY remembered him saying east before, when I was a kid.

The time line for me is 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.On 5, the character who show traits from the "cat clan" is that this clan got instinct and she do have them on genetic, but its mixed now. Also its underground, gods left "us" due to the world destruction. It's clarly the last for me.On 4, well a guy want to create god, this does not mean that there was no gods neither that he or his work created BoF 1-3 goddess. In fact, he may want to create due to her absence. The world also is a strong sign that it's linear games.Maybe, BoF 2 came before 1, due to have less deserts but for me it's a linear timeline

I always looked at it 1234. But 4 causes a loop. Not literal but thematically. That the story would repeat itself just with with different set if characters. 4 basically shows gods being created which can both be the ending of one arc and the beginning of the next.

at 15:28 the theories that Nina and Ryu get together and screws the flying people out of their abilities is mentioned in BOF 2. When Nina wants to her hands on her ancestral powers, she fight alone a boss just to learn its actually Nina of BOF1 appearing in BOF 2. Right there the old Nina mentions what happen to the flying powers when she got together with Ryu also linking BOF 1 and 2 in the process. .... if my memory is right. There is a mural in Bof 3 where you see event of Bof1 so its easy to say Bof 3 come after at least BOF1. But BOF4 and 5 are completely free to be anywhere at all as they contain zero link to any other game other then the lore of the series.

To me the timeline would be more like 4 1 2 3 5. You are forgetting a very important thing about Deis, Myria sister! She was summoned a little before or after the foundation of the Fou Empire on BoF 4 and died on BoF 3 meaning that there is no way to BoF 4 be after BoF 3. My theory is that Deis was also separated by time on her summoning. She managed to find a body to house her soul (probably one of the many creatures that where affected by the Gods aura) and when her other half (the body) came it became Myria. Due to Deis being weak and the gods had being lifted from the would she never had a chance against Myria so she never tried to become one with her other half. Ryu and Nina probably married. Their children would become the Dragon clan and The Windyans that could turn into a bird. Another thing is P'ung Ryong the Wind Dragon on BoF 4 says that the Windians are his children in a way that highly suggest that he is their creator. There was no P'ung Ryong on the games before BoF 4 but there was Windians meaning that all BoF had to come after BoF 4. I haven't read much about BoF 6 but one of the things a read was that BoF 6 is a sequel to BoF 4 and your character are decedents of BoF 4 Ryu and Nina what would confirm that they married. I'm not sure if this information is legit. BUT! There are some clues during BoF 4 that hint that this game runs in a different universe. Momo is the biggest. So trying to fit BoF 4 in a timeline with the other games is probably a wasted effort.

P'ung Ryong is the protector of the Windians, not the creator, but as you say, try to linked all the games is a waste of time, they are not in the same universe, just 1->2 and 1->3

@vitor900000 5 жыл бұрын
@@t6y6fihu8hy9jjuhi Played the game like 10 days ago without any skip. He refers to Windians as his children... He does not state that he is their creator but the way he talks about them highly suggest that he is their creator. Considering that creatures where being altered just by the existence of Ryu and Fou-Lu Ex:(Vulcan/Ship wreck island Golem bosses) and that Gods where summoned to this would to bring changes its totally believable that he could create/alter life at his will or by accident. But like you said 1>3 are the main story of the first games and 2 while being on the same universe is more like a side story. And BoF 5 could easy be connect with BoF 2 and 3. On BoF 2 we leave people living underground and in BoF 3 we defeat Myria leaving the brood to spread free. On BoF 5 we live underground because dragons (Aka the brood) destroyed the surface. And even on the 1>2>3 timeline there are inconsistencies. Like in BoF 1 and 2 Myria is portrait as bad and evil while in 3 she is portrait as a overprotective mother trying to save the world from impending doom.

@@vitor900000 It's pretty much up in the air (heh!) what he's actualy supposed to represent, seeing as this entry is particularly ridden with mistranslations and polysemies. For instance, the King of Wyndia regarded him as "the patron God and protector of our people" in the English ver., while in the original JP script he said something more akin to “a messenger/message from God” instead; while the official manga barely delves into it at all. Edit: While it’s certainly fun to speculate, this once great series was pretty much a more interwoven Final Fantasy-like anthology, to the point where there are even fan theories abound that put it in the same universe as other Capcom franchises.

Wow, good work! I guess you could say I grew up with this series, but I always played a lot of JRPGs and wasn't the biggest fan of this series. I stopped buying them when they came out after 3, because I felt horribly burned by the mini games and bullshit difficulty walls. It took me three tries to finally beat that game. Hell, I was actually pretty burned by 2 now that I think about it. It forced you use weak party members, and it forever changed the way I play RPGs. Now I always use the lowest level party members just to give them a chance to show me what they've got. It took me two play throughs to beat that one. BoF1 had an uneven difficulty curve too, with a brutal beginning and a cakewalk of an endgame. BoF1 taught me an early lesson in McGuyvering my way though RPGs, using whatever scant resources the game sees fit to give me. I guess it was actually a pretty influential series for me, but not always because it was actually enjoyable. That was more rambling than I intended, and could use a rewrite, but I'm too lazy! So enjoy lots of words!

Man I can relate.. each Breath of Fire game seemed to hammer in some lesson for RPG's that I took with me. Like the BoF1 difficulty.. the one thing I remember the most from all the games was how expensive it was to buy ANY new equipment in BoF3. You could grind for ages but you'd only be able to afford one set of equipment for a single character in your party. Now I'm the biggest cheapskate ever in games... even with millions I think about purchases haha
@Namingway
@Namingway 6 жыл бұрын
That might a fun topic to cover. What lessons various RPGs taught you and habits they enforced. It's at least a fun thought experiment. What habits do I have, and where did I pick them up? Some games have even taught me to break certain habits. For example, FF7 taught me to break my hoarding habit. You could dupe items in that game, so I just duped 99 megalixirs and used them whenever I felt like it. It made them less special, for sure. And at some point after that, I realized that items are meant to be used. If you never use them, you wasted them. Now I use all of my money for new gear, and just use whatever items the game gives me for free. I never buy items unless the game forces me to, I like to McGuyver it. Also, most RPGs have balance issues that make the beginning of the game harder than the endgame, so I use permanent stat increasing items early on, when one stat point can make or break you, rather than saving them up for the end to balance out a weak character.

I will also say that if they ever wanted to breath life back into this game they could do so by releasing a Prequel. That would bring back Myria and tie the first 3 game's together nicely with 4 being a bonus game.

I think 4 plays after 3. Her strong connection to Ryu indicates that. If you chose to join Fou Lu at the end and fight the former party Ershin refuses to battle and will only block until killed. Out of all the party members who fought alongside Ryu for the entire game she is the only one refusing to battle him because of their centuryspanning bond. I also think 4 is the last in the series as Ryus spirit gets summoned into another world and can not return. 5 Is most likely after 3. i think the people in this game are the decendants of the dragons who moved underground in BoF2. And the world in ruins is pretty much what game 3 was about. The centuryspanning rain. the evergrowing desert. And before 3 there was a high culture with robots and stuff. So the world and technology in 5 seems fitting. It's either decendants of the Dragons from 2. Or the general population moving underground after 3.

Myra, I have to say that this video was enlightening but there's an issue or two I'd like to address. Dragon Quarter was ruled out to be non-canon due to its plot being nothing like the first 4 games. Placing it at the start of your timeline would be crazy as it is somewhat more advanced in comparison to the others. It could pretty much stand as its own thing and not conflict with the other games. I can see where it would work but then how do you explain the clans being absent in DQ when they somewhat are around in IV, II, and the first game? III clearly had no Wyndians as they all are assumed to have essentially gone extinct due to excessive breeding outside of their own race. Naturally the gene pool would've been too diluted for them to keep their genetics in check. This began as early as the second game.
@MyraSlokov
@MyraSlokov 6 жыл бұрын
That is true, BoF 5 could be the end and the restart of the world is the beginning of something completely new. My thinking is maybe, since the world is actually okay, that the clans are existing on the surface, evolving from the animals or whatnot that inhabit there. But, since it's entirely my own speculation, I didn't include it. Still, there's evidence for the clans changing and growing slowly from what we see in 5. Linn could be the start but can equally be the last bit of Woren blood, who knows? That's why its fun to think about these things :)

Also for the Desert of Death, Deathevan could have caused desertfication, by draining life energy. Case in point Mikba, a demon speaks of Deathevan like any demon, "our god".

I'm years late to the party, but if DQ IS a prequel, then either Nina herself, or the experiment that created her, could be the source of Myria, judging from the glowing blue wing-like things the two have in common. Thus bringing the first humanoid god into existence, and if it is Nina, bringing rise to the other dragons besides the man-made Dragon Halves, Odjin, Chetrye, and Dover, in memory of Ryu. Which also leaves it at the end being viable as well, with the experiment seeking to replicate Myria, just as the D-Ratio 1/2s were trying to recreate the Dragon Clan. But that's legit speculation after beating the game over a decade ago.

Well there is a huge problem with calling Ryu and Fou-Lu *demons* The Japanese Demon, is an Oni, a Person, Being, or Creature, that has let go of their Humanity, unable to change back. In Japan, Dragons are often a being that is godlike, or is a god. Then there is the stories where Dragons have been trapped into a human, only able to summon their true power through will/x thing that happens. They would change form, gain scales, get horns, partial wings and well pretty much look less human. However, they would still have their humanity, unlike a demon, who threw away their humanity. Next is also about Dias, she clearly knows who Ryu is, without a second glance she wants to help him. Same as both Rei and Teepo appear in Breath of Fire 4, and gives Ryu's old rusty sword over to him. So 4 can't be before 1, 2 or 3. Unless Rei and Teepo can time jump, it kind of is clear 4 comes after 3.
@MyraSlokov
@MyraSlokov 4 жыл бұрын
Lovely information there, people should absolutely read this comment. One thing I will disagree on is Rei and Teepo's cameo, as I would consider that fan service and not an indication of continuity. We know Teepo isn't alive in 3's conclusion, so it's hard to use that evidence as a means to connect the two games. Other than that, beautiful comment!

They're all fantastic but wouldn't even make my top 20 list for SNES/PS1 RPGs. That's how many great one's there were back then. I think two things killed it. Firstly, no game company big or small can separate business and pleasure. Not to say people at Capcom didn't have passion, but let's be real, they didn't re-release Street Fighter II a million times back then just because they really, really liked the game, and if it wasn't for Square and Enix they wouldn't had made an RPG. I don't know if they have Christmas in Japan but they got it with the early years of Dragon Quest. Second thing that killed the series, culture change, and the new culture waged a corporate and political war to last right up to today when it should've faded out already. You can sum it all up with music. The culture that produced Breath of Fire was the culture of Nirvana , Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM, Tool, Deftones, offspring, and so many more. The culture that took over was, well, just look at the music industry at that time. Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys. Final Fantasy X-2, despite being a guilty pleasure of mine, signified the death of video games as we knew them as much as the death of Kurt Cobain signified the end of Seattle grunge. RPGs between PS1 and now cut their hair, cleaned themselves up, got on anger medication, and declared Ms. Pac-Man to lead them into the future.

Theme number 4 is just plain annoying in JRPGs which Breath of fire is no exception unfortunately. Instead of the wish being a test, they just had to make the goddess intentionally evil just because. If breath of fire comes back, that needs to change.

Saying that 4 and 5 "not feels as deep as the previous games" is so miss information, BoF4 and 5 have deeper, complex and more shocking storyline than 1 to 3 easily, Ok I know is just your taste, but came on, you say you played a long time ago, probably with other set of mind, you should have re-played them all before making the video, I recomend you go back and play BoF4 and 5 with open mind this time. - - Now some fun fact: 1- Ryu was never really "mute" in the BoF1 his had some lines and in the 2 he can talk, but is more like the listening guy, just like in 3 and 4, is just a narrative device to emerge the player, because the game interprets was you're talking as Ryu when playing, in the opening of 4 Ryu even tell his name to Nina but the dialogue box don't show up because of the narrative style, I know a lot of fans already know that, but some really think the guy is mute... - 2- The fan headcanon teory about all BoF is in the same universe is extemely flawed and is definitly not canon, I lot of the time is made by people that don't play BoF as deep as they could (especialy 4 and 5). - 3- BoF3 actually completely ignore the events of BoF2, fans normaly overshadow that like you did, but the storyline of BoF2 is never mentioned or had any impact in BoF3, only BoF1 which is the "Major event" before BoF3, They even ignore the fact that the Dragon Clan and Dragonier is buried deep in a mountain in the BoF2 ending, and some other details. - 4- Emperor Soniel as planned to be killed in the end of BoF4 but this event was cut because of lack of time in development of the game.
