No matter what job you do, there will be people who simply aren't nice. I start clinicals in January and I accept that there will be nice people and mean people. I'm there to learn and know that I will manage no matter who I have to deal with.

That's a good attitude to have! Nothing to do with a specific profession. It does have everything to do with that person as an individual though

Floor nurses and icu nurses are a whole different breed altogether. Floor nurses don’t always know what we do but icu nurses realize a little more. That can make a huge difference in a nurses attitude towards us as well.
@BreatheEasyRRT4 жыл бұрын
It is certainly all about understanding each others professions! On the floors people see less of what we do, until there is an emergency.

As a recent nursing grad all I can say is that I love RTs to pieces and can't wait to work side by side with you guys.

girl! yes nurses know what you do and the shortage of RTs in the medical center settings.. We love you guys because the nurses would be doing the trach care etc when yall are not available.

Nurses do have a lot of responsibility. Generally speaking they need to know broad topics of the entire body and all its systems. Other Health Care professions are mostly specific, but are very very involved such as Physical Therapy Assistants, Respiratory Therapists, Surgical Techs. Nurses have a general lack of understanding of what the other professions do because they have so much responsibility.
@BreatheEasyRRT4 жыл бұрын
I can understand that and also think it depends on the hospitals. I have heard of nurses getting "talked to" for other specialties not completing tasks, even though it is not their responsibility. I think that type of hospital culture creates a more hostile environment between specialties as well.

From an Ed techs point of view Nurses rag on RTs all the time. Sometimes it gets ridiculous. “All they do is give breathing treatments.”
@BreatheEasyRRT4 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a hospital/department culture issue and again not necessarily understanding each other's roles. Who just sits around and talks crap on another profession anyway, lol. Education is 100% key.

It was bad at a LTC facility with a vent unit. The CNO had never worked with RRT in her prior jobs which were all on nursing homes. She thought we should help CNAs complete their duties. It was ridiculous. This is a busy facility with their vent population and your lucky to get 5 minutes without that being filled with charting catch up

Don't worry, I promise not to be mean to an RT (or anyone else for that matter) when I become a nurse
@BreatheEasyRRT4 жыл бұрын
Thats what we should all aim for! Working together respectfully, even if we don't understand each other's professions 100%. Good luck on your journey!

They used to tell nurses in nursing school to watch out for respiratory therapists because they’re going to take over your job. I don’t think they tell them that now days. Just be professional, treat others as you would like to be treated no matter how you are treated and everything will work out.
@BreatheEasyRRT4 жыл бұрын
Oh wow. I haven't heard that before

I'm so happy you addressed this topic. I am about to go into clinicals next semester and all I've heard is how mean, rude, and absolutely nasty the nurses are and it can't be all of them, that's like saying all dogs bite. I'm so glad to get another perspective. Thank you
@BreatheEasyRRT4 жыл бұрын
Great analogy! It's about hospital culture, education and just showing them what you do. Good luck at clinical!!

It's happened to me 2 or 3 times now over the past year. Which isnt often but yesterday it just happened again 🙃 I was 1 hr late for a breathing treatment due to a reach call so they marked it as missed 🤷🏼♀️ they still got there treatment done, just a little late.
