Breathing Apparatus Emergency CPR concept

This is a short film produced by Rushmoor Fire Station in Farnborough, Hampshire about how you could deal with a firefighter in cardiac arrest to give them the best chance of survival.

This procedure is absolutely ignorant. There is no evidence that this works to give efficient CPR. First off, no one has identified if there is or isn’t a pulse. Secondly, CPR through bunker gear and while on an unstable SCBA, does not provide solid stable platform to start and manage effective depth of push. Third, Compressions take much longer to create enough pressure to actually circulate blood. In the time frame of this drill, the few compressions performed prior to removal of patient from gear is not sufficient to build circulatory pressure. This drill is much better performed with two rescuers pulling the firefighter out (should never enter with less than a 3 person entry team for exactly this reason). First rescuer straddles patient while standing and undoes SCBA belt then pulls up shoulder straps and holds open while arms are pushed through by second rescuer, who then pulls off SCBA while firefighter 1 pulls patient forward. Firefighter 1 then opens bunker coat while firefighter 2 removes helmet and face piece. FF 1 drops down to chest for compressions while 2 checks pulse. This whole thing is done in less than 10-12 seconds. Due to faster extraction time by adequately staffed interior crew and rapid removal of gear, the CPR started this way gives faster move to effective CPR with rapid and sustained circulation.
