Recorded on the beautiful afternoon of September 5th, at 6 PM, this footage captures a delightful boat ride through Saimaa with a kind Finnish local student from LUT University, who generously gave me a memorable ride.
Lake Saimaa, Finland's largest lake and the fourth largest in Europe, spans an impressive 4,400 square kilometers. Known for its crystal-clear waters, numerous islands, and intricate shorelines, Saimaa offers endless opportunities for exploration. As we cruised through the lake, you’ll see the many islands covered in lush forests. Finland, famously known as the “Land of a Thousand Lakes,” is home to around 188,000 lakes, with 70% of its area covered by forests. This rich natural landscape provides a serene and enchanting setting.
The city of Lappeenranta, nestled on the southern shores of this majestic lake, is known for its unique natural beauty. With its lush green forests and sparkling waters, Lappeenranta has an almost fairytale-like charm. The city is celebrated for its environmental sustainability and is recognized as the "Climate Capital of Finland," earning awards for its clean and pristine environment.
Boat riding is a cherished activity in Finland, especially in cities with lakeside access. In Lappeenranta, the easy access to Lake Saimaa makes boating a popular pastime for both locals and visitors. The tranquil waters and scenic landscapes provide a perfect backdrop for a relaxing and enjoyable experience.
Having lived in Lappeenranta for two years while studying at Lappeenranta University of Technology, I’ve had the privilege of exploring the lake daily and forming cherished memories and friendships. This video captures just a glimpse of the magic that Lake Saimaa and its surroundings offer.
