As a graphic designer, I love that the olympics has always believed pictograms to be essential to their marketing! They understood early on that when you bring people together from all over, simple pictures and logos can go a long way in communicating a concept visually ❤ Just such a cool use of pictograms, we had a whole lesson about their history in one of the courses

Olympics' branding was my best source to learn about visual branding in graphic design. Second best was looking up brand guidelines of companies, but the guidelines of Olympics are always the best study because (1) It shows how the whole spectrum of design is applied: iconography, imagery, typography, architecture, down to character creation for mascots, etc. (2) Every Olympic branding is actually a marriage of two identities : the Olympic branding itself (the legacy 5 colored circles), with the identity of the host city (and don't get me started on how hard it is to build an identity of a city: especially if it has less specific identity - for example it would be harder to visually convey Vancouver as opposed to Rio). (3) As it is happening periodically, you can sort of see how design develops over time and compare one to another.

This was outstanding. More so when you take into account how important the introduction of pictograms was in Tokyo 1964, for both the Olympics and the world. They are paying homage to that idea in such an amusing, delightful and Japanese way.

@@nickryan6787 Well, I know people have a limited time (which depends on the sport) to be an Olympian. However, I think many, if not most would have preferred stadiums full of people watching them do their thing. Also, not to mention it would probably be safer give that I'm sure even more people would be vaccinated, this allowing for crowds (or at least a small number of them) to be in the audience.🤷‍♂️
