Note that none of those paintings are real appearance of the sultans. Sultans didn't allow to be painted in the early age, except for Mehmed II and Suleiman I, up until Mahmud II in early 18th century. And even during the reign of successor son of Mehmed II, Bayezid I had all paintings in the palace removed, which he thought it's sinful. Reason why Mehmed II and Suleiman I have paintings by Bellini (Mehmed II) and Titan (Suleiman I) (which is not included in video but you can simply google it) was because they both were embracing towards arts work and they were simply more open minded. Meanwhile other sultans in the video like Selim I who was pretty pious and kept a very simple humble appearance throughout his life. There's even a story of him when he sees his son Suleiman I comes in his presence with accessories and fancy dress, Selim angrily says "ey Suleyman! if you dress this fancy, what is left to your mother?"

Mahmoud II was in 19th century, not 18th. And son of Mehmed II is Bayezid II, not Bayezid I. But you're correct overall, most paintings do not represent the real appearances of the sultans

@@cameliachihaia6502 We are talking about 1200s-1600s. Where people live a life with sword, where people kill each other for a dynasty, where people poison their own sister/brother/father/mother for authority. Don't compare those times with now. If you really care about human life and not being racist, then you can start by judging firstly your ancestors for their slavery history. How they were thinking black people is their good, so they can buy/sell them for a cost. I'm pretty sure you are brainwashed with fake stories which made you hate Ottoman Empire.

I’ve always wondered how such tall turbines maintained their shape and position on the head.
@marvinfok652 жыл бұрын
There is some kind of a harder light structure inside these tall turbans to support it. It is not all fabric inside else it would be so heavy that the sultans would have suffered permanent neck injuries even if they don't wear it the whole day.

@@beverlyhollenbeck3406 its only used in ceremonies for paintings in this case. it was a thin cloth, reminding the sultans they were mere slave of Allah and when they died they would be burried as any other muslim. thin white cloth under the ground no special coffin etc.
@Big-BossX2 жыл бұрын
@@beverlyhollenbeck3406 its called küllah in turkish which translates to cone. Imagine something like a fez but a bit taller, and around it the turban gets rolled and tucked. It was like the other guy said a symbol and reminder of death, its the cloth one is buried in and symbolically means "we wear death on our heads" or "death is our crown" etc
