I'll have to double-check but this sounds even better than the Soul Note recording made on the same trip ("Change of Season"). Bennink damn near doubles the time on his solo on "The Gig", ending around 22:30 - I'm amazed George could play the head at that speed!

Wonderful discovery! Timeless music (mainly Herbie Nichols compositions) played by true originals. Misha Mengelberg (with trademark sandals and cigarette) plays marvellously as a soloist and accompanist; George Lewis applies his virtuosity to great effect in a (relatively) more conventional setting than usual; Steve Lacy at his lyrical best; Han Bennink brimming with eccentric excellence but never at the expense of his bandmates; and Arjen Gorter providing a perfect foundation -and he even beats Misha on the cigarette stakes! A wonderful testimony to their collective outstanding musicality .
