I just want to say a huge thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience in fish breeding. Your dedication and passion are truly inspiring! I'm new to breeding myself, and your content has been a fantastic resource to help me get started here in Kenya. I’d really love to connect and maybe even chat with you to learn more, especially from someone as experienced as you. It would mean a lot if you could get back to me-looking forward to hearing from you!

I don't have anywhere else to post this! I just completely accidentally have baby fish! I broke down a tank, put a wad of moss in a bin with tank water and set it aside for well over a week maybe close to 2 weeks. Went to deal with the moss tonight and found 40 babies! They are either thread fin rainbows or dwarf rainbows. So excited. Hopefully I don't kill them moving them to a better situation. There was just too much yuck at the bottom of the bin, no filter and no heater. It is a miracle. Maybe not but it feels like it! Yay! Fingers crossed!

The mesh! Damn, should have thought of this ages ago. Thank you for that. 4:37 They are really really cool! I wish I could find short finned zebras here though; they're impossible to find despite checking for years. Every failure in this hobby tends to translate to a success in terms of learning. As in most things. This is great information to share.
@seangere9698Ай бұрын
Try using granny grating. The plastic grid that you find in the sewing section of arts and crafts stores. It works so much better. All you have to do is get some PVC pipe cut 2-4 cm / 1 to 2 ince long pieces. I glue a stone inside the pipe to weigh them down. Drill a hole through one end and zip tie the grating to the top of the pipe, letting them stand vertically. Then, place them in the bottom of my trays or buckets in your case. Fill up the tray so there is 8 to 10 cm 4 to 5 inches of water over the grating and add the fish. This works great for just about all small free swimming spawning fish. I use this mostly for neons, glowlight, and cardinal tetras, but I have had huge success with killing fish as well as danios of several species.

@jamievetter601Ай бұрын
I use a far easier method. I keep the Danios in a heavily planted tank until l want babies. I remove the adults, turn off the lights and wait. The fish will hatch over a period of weeks. Use minimum soft light for a few hours each day until all are hatched. I also keep ghost shrimp in the tank to keep the tank clean. It works every time.

I know nothing about fish, but do know a little bit about plastics/physics. Would it be possible your mesh net (nylon) was repelling water, causing a thin layer of air around the holes, and as a result the eggs would not easily "fall through" the net. I would experiment with netting in other material (that are not water-repellant), or netting with larger "holes"
@jimmied2838Ай бұрын
For someone breeding for their self this is great. As far as breeding for profit probably not the most efficient way but still if u set up multiple buckets u could end up with a lot of fry. Great video

Thank you. I also failed with breeding super easy fish so many times and I was wondering why me because everyone was saying that it is super easy. I found out the hard way that I actually have to make lots of effort and give into it as much as I can even if it is easy to breed. It was really hard to go through all of that process. This hobby is definitely demanding in many ways even if you just want to have a nice looking aquarium, whereas producing more of the fish and plants is much harder but it’s one of the things that makes it fun. Nice to see that I am not the only one who fails sometimes.

I did this method with my celestials. I recommend catching them in the dark then putting them in the bucket with the light on. As soon as the light turns on they get active and shove themselves into the moss. After that I left the moss in the bucket and left the fish eggs to hatch. I use the mesh to separate eggs and the fish but I found that my trouble some and the eggs would get stuck on the mesh and get damaged or impossible to find. My yields before I removed it were 3-8 hatches after I put in 4 females 2 males in the bucket everyday. I found better success when the mesh was gone. I just checked the bucket and I so far have 10 with 2 more days of fish getting ready to hatch

The advantage of breeding egg layers on a bucket is, after you remove the parents you can swirl the water in the bucket and all the eggs will gather in the center. At this point you can use a turkey baster and suck the eggs up easily or just make all the eggs dizzy. LOL
@strider5119Ай бұрын
I dunno if they're the same as other fish, but I've found with a few that the first spawn or 2 has a low survival rate and it improves over time. I had this specifically with small plecos though (BN, Pepps and L397). First batch would end up with maybe 25% surviving, next was a good 50-60%, everything after that was 90+

I tried this a few times with my zebra danios. It usually worked, but most of the offspring ended up deformed once they got a bit larger (already with the stripes). I think the parents had weak genes. The parents have died by now at about 2 years old. Maybe I'll try again later.

Here is a tip from 30 plus years ago. Try about 100mm of large marbles as a base. The eggs fall through and you should get a huge spawn. Side note, why danios ? They are cheap worthlessness fish.
