Hey Chris so tip I've noticed when people try and breed em its 100% fresh water and they don't simulate the tides like in nature they are brackish water species regardless of them living in fresh water they go to the river mouths or estuaries to spawn so try a low salinity brackish water after they acclimate then id try draining the water to the sand layer it will simulate natural feeding and breeding I hope this might help with ur breeding love the vids good luck

I live in Delaware so we have a lot of Fiddler crabs right in our own backyard because of the bay . I have noticed that they only in canals that flood at high tide and completely dry out in low tide . They also only breed in areas with a lot of bay grass (short bamboo type plant) to retract into to breed. They also only will breed if you have a deep sand bed probably 6-8 inches deep Just figured I might give a couple tips since I have witnessed a lot of there natural behavior

these crabs are right up there with hermit crabs in terms of how fun they are to keep as pets. i basically grew up with hermit crabs and i used to buy the bait fiddler crabs from our local fish shack and keep them as pets, though they rarely lasted more than a few weeks and i think that owes itself to my lack of aquarium salt since they are, at the least brackish water animals.
@marcusbullock6302 жыл бұрын
when i was young i kept killing the crabs because I didnt know they needed brackish water and air. i figured it out one day when my redclaw was missing one day. then i caught it crawling up the power cord back to the tank to 'refresh' itself. smart little buggers.
@Hiforest2 жыл бұрын
I think the Internet is fantastic in this respect. Sadly a lot of these animal died because people didn't know how to care for them. Like them needing fresh water as well as salt water (presumably this is the case with all crabs and not just hermit crabs).

He was in a 10 gallon aquarium as a fully grown male I now have him in a custom enclosure that's around a 50 gallon area. Fiddlers are SUPER fun pets to have. They are smarter than they seem and super cute to watch. My sister in law had some for awhile when she lived with me! Hers were about an inch across on top of their main body shell. (Sorry I don’t know crab parts very well.) One time, she put the water level just a bit too high and one of them climbed out of the tank “oops” 🥴 Said crab then proceeds to walk out of the room and had to slip under a closed door, walk down the hallway into the kitchen dining area. This is like ten miles for those tiny little spindly legs. As I sat down for a meal, I heard a strange little clicking sound on the hardwood… this gave me pause and I looked for the source of the noise as that little brat ran very loudly at lightning speed up my leg!! 😂😂😂 my heart jumped out of my body since it looked like an extremely large spider and less like a crab at that point! Haha needless to say I dipped out of there so fast it fell off my leg!! I felt bad afterwards, but neither crab nor me were harmed. I picked him up and walked down the hall to ask her “you missing a crab?” She says “no…” I said, “well I have one right here!!” Sure enough the escapee was returned to his buddies and the water level was lowered before he caused any more mini heart attacks 😂🤣

They breed in brackish water and when the eggs hatch the larvae of most crabs are free swimming in the planktonic layer of the ocean for a while ,after a few melts it sinks to the bottom looking and acting like little crabs , this usually happens at a river mouth or brackish water marsh area and then after another molt or two they run upstream to fresh water and some leave the water completely.

the problem with crab larvae is they have two stages- the zoeae and the megalops. the zoeae state eats algae and other minute particles. but once they transform into the megalops stage they become predatory on other zoeae. in addition to this, you must raise salinity to full marine or else the zoeae cant turn into megalops. then once they become megalops, you can slowly reduce it back to brackish, and they become immatures, transitioning into terrestrial behavior. you must give them a way out at this stage or else they will all drown upon their molt into immatures, as they become air breathers at this stage. whatever water reservoir you hold the megalops in must have granular rough texture or a large chunk of rock for them to escape from.
@aaronj29132 жыл бұрын
I'm glad someone else said this. You would also need a special tank to rear the larvae (the circular flow kind that people use to raise jellyfish)

I just set up a marmorkreb dwarf crayfish bin setup tonight. I used crushed oyster shell as a substrate, I think they'll like that with their rapidly shedding and regrowing shells. They are very small right now, I have two of them, one is about 1 inch, the other about 3/4 inch. I think you'd love these guys because once you get them going, they reproduce so fast and would be great food for the big fish.

to breed almost any crab you need a set up that has both fresh and salt water almost land crabs use fresh water most of the time but need to return to the ocean to release their eggs in to. this is why it is so hard to impossible to breed crabs in captivity as you would need a really big set up and it would be like having three aquariums placed in a row, one of fresh water, one of land, and one of salt water. not saying it could not be done but most hobbies or keepers can never do it.
