Highly recommend dusted fruit flies as a staple for both adults and young. I am on my fifth year breeding hagens. Im overrun lol. Try using aquarium filter sponge pad/mats cut into chunks for your grow outs. I prefer using green for visibility. Carrots, bananas, frozen bloodworms, and I usually dust with a carotenoid powder every few feedings. Really makes their color pop. I keep my adults much like I keep my dart frogs. Deep substrate layer for burrowing, leaf litter, heavily planted etc. Unlike my darts there is a drip wall and a water feature. More cover equals more activity and they seem bolder. Also very little aggression in a 25x25x32 with around 18 adults.

Just something I have seen others do, with leaf litter they will boil it than place it in a freeze for a few days. this keeps the leaf looking less burnt and kills most if not all living parasites. I would recommend doing some research and see if it would work for you.

awesome setup man! try putting in some cuttlefish bones (those thingies u get for birds to gnaw on) Will help with their shell development :D Also if you start having problems with high acidity in the water, try swapping out the oak and magnolia leaves for smth like linde (tilia sp.). Oak and magnolia leaves are very high in tanins and can have a bitter taste for a lot of animals. Linde is a very mild soft leaf than breaks down a lot quicker

Man they look kinda fun to keep these vampire crabs and breed as well. I kinda keep comparing them to keeping red cherry shrimp. Something different, you know, than keeping fish. Is inbreeding any bigger issue with vampire crabs? Do they loose color (like red cherry shrimp) or get sick due to inbreeding? Of course they probably do over a longer period of time due to not getting new blood or genetics. So how do you prevent that from happening? You buy new crabs and add them to the family? I myself have a cherry shrimp tank with Helena/assassin snails and a fish tank with Endlers guppy, Ember tetras, Plecos and Amano shrimp plus Helena/assassin snails to keep pest snails down to a minimum
@devinh47252 жыл бұрын

When I had crabs I put sand in my tank because they like to dig or coco fiber. How do you keep the temp above 75 and humidity?
@sillyface69502 жыл бұрын
Things like heat lamps can be good for providing the right heat in terrariums. And for the water i guess you could use some kind of aquarium water heater if needed. As for humidity, using substrate that is good at retaining moisture and giving the enclose a quick mist with some sort of spray bottle can help. I'm no expert so please do your own research, but hopefully this helps. I don't know any good ways of cooling enclosures though so be careful not to let things get too hot.

@sillyface69502 жыл бұрын
No matter what the animal, if what you put it in is secure enough to hold them, the right size and able to provide what they need then it should be okay. A place to hide and some good enrichment is always great to add for any creature. With most animals, the more room the better. i say most cos I know it can be different for things like ant keeping, especially when starting a colony. Not sure about crabs cos I'm not familiar with them so I would suggest doing some research on the type you want and what their needs are.

I had a big Ikea box when I started and kept it in the heating room. They where totally happy with it. To some Geosesarma its important to have enough room since they could fight and loose their claws. I recently had one loosing them, if it happens don't kill them. Keep them inside a tank where they are save and you see how they feed. I have spots where I put floating fish food inside the tank and the crab can reach the spot with its mouth. That way it takes until the next skin change and the claws will come back.
@lonecreep7081 Жыл бұрын

How long does it take from the time they're born til adulthood?
@jheyerlein Жыл бұрын
It depends on the food you feed, the temperature and the place they tend to hang out inside the tank. Mine (yellow eye) took around 10 month to get their white claws. The biggest of them had them at 8 month old the tiniest after 10 1/2. They are not fully grown yet and did not reproduce. I keep them colder at around 22/23 °C - keeping them warmer will make them grow faster.
