Nice video! All had a good bit of exercise. Think cattle rancher... use funnels of "walls" or fencing, something that can be used multiple times (every year you decide to pair them up), the small bits of walls/fence can be clipped together and later separated and set aside for later - helps immensely. Best wishes and thanks for sharing. Hugs from Texas.

Lol, I have 6 geese and this is why I hand raise my breeding geese, because it's SO MUCH EASIER to interact with them, treat them for sicknesses and hopefully it'll make them a little less aggressive with me once they do lay eggs and build a nest.

I used to have geese ..4@ one stage.There was only one time that my female Emden hatched out Goslings.Unfortunately,I wasn't home@the time.They didn't survive as a bloody cat was waiting upon the other side of the fence.

@user-ks5ny5jn4r im so sorry to hear that! yes, we have had a cat steal a juvanile chick. But so far we have had good luck with raising goslings. My geese raised like 8 last year and lost none. We had 6+ cats on the property. It's likely because my gander is VERY protective and is a hybrid canada goose. I also have pure canada geese as well.

I have a hybrid pet goose. We believe him to be a Chinese/canada goose. I'm in the usa. He is legal. His momma was a farm goose and from what I have found out since his hatch, (I assume) that his daddy was a permit canada goose on that homestead. He is amazing... A goofy guy.. clumsy and sweet with a spoiled attitude lol. I absolutely ADORE HYBRIDS!

Hi, I have a pair of 2 year old Pilgrims, and I would like to let them hatch their eggs, but I do not know if they might be brother and sister, I have no way to find out. also I dont know if their parents were brother and sister. I heard that was bad breeding practice. so is that true?
@AnnoyDad2 жыл бұрын
I've always been told that it should be avoided at all costs. Personally, I would look for other birds to bring in, and start 2 breeding flocks, if you have the space.

When are hatching eggs going to be available
@AnnoyDad3 жыл бұрын
When they start laying, I will take enough to fill my incubators. As long as they come out as fertile, I will then start selling. All being well, I would image it to be March / April / May. I haven't had an egg yet, but don't expect to for a few weeks.

Stupid question but don't geese need water to properly breed?
@AnnoyDad3 жыл бұрын
They have 'ponds'. Which are basically the blue shell paddling pools. They don't need a pond or water course. They mate on land, as well as on water. Fingers crossed, when the mating starts properly, I'll get some footage of it 👍

I noticed mine love their kiddie pools...a lot...during breeding season. I assume that's what you all call paddling pools:)? I just finished my breeding area and of course, I'm like, best look at what someone else has done afterwords... @@AnnoyDad

Not so sure about geese, but chickens can actuality still be fertilised even if the rooster was removed 14+ days

Yup, I've heard differing figures, from different people. I'm not sure if anyone knows for certain 🤷♂️🤷♂️ But I'm hoping I'll be OK at 30 days
@noahriding5780 Жыл бұрын
The thing you asked about regarding the 30 days wait when you change their pens and which are in the same pen before you are sure the eggs won't be from others, is TRUE. I hope also by answering this that you can answer some of my questions. :) The reason the 30 day wait thing is true and works is because some poultry and waterfowl have the ability to store sperm. Meaning the hens can store it in their body for a certain time such that they don't have to be bred every single time they lay an egg. (I think its called a spermatheca, but I've a bit fuzzy on my memory on this because I didn't know I'd be talking about this.) (This is the similar for honey bees and some other species also, though its a different figure for how long they can store it with bees.) I know this from raising ducks and rules for waterfowl ... 'USUALLY' are similar. But I've not done geese before. I wanted to ask also if its safe to give geese grass clippings? In low water states if you see your neighbor cutting the lawn they might ask if you want them for your animals. (But for some animals like horses that is extremely bad.) (And not sure for how many days old of the clippings this would be safe for with geese if it is safe.) I'm also curious what the magic number is on flock size before the noise level goes up a lot, with how many you can have together? With ducks its about 10 or 12 before they start getting a lot noisier, compared to how many you can keep together and keep them quiet. I've no idea what this would be for geese. ... If you have other questions or things you want to bounce ideas around about feel free to reply and I'll try to help if I can. Have you tried doing some sprouted fodder also? Could save you some money but takes a bit of time to figure out.
@sknerl8 ай бұрын
I gave mine clippings all last year. Just scatter them like you would hay because they're wet and will ferment and mold if piled up too much at one time. I do this with a hay bale in the spring (just did) in the area they will lay this year. Year 12 with geese, year 3 (second breeding season) with geese I want to breed. I use my garden area...the area I intend to plant late green beans. (June 15) I use row covers so "splash poop" isn't as big of a deal. Usually poo and gardens doesn't mix well without a 2 month barrier. (I just don't want to see you or someone else take a risk without knowing.)

Is it ever advantageous to cross breed geese?
@AnnoyDad3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure it is. We have always found that pure breeds sell better than cross breeds.
