"I've had this female on my to-do list since 1998." EDIT: I feel like I should admit that I found the remark hilarious in a truly juvenile way, while at the same time understanding it 100%. I also breed fish (guppies, mollies and bettas) and I know exactly what it is to have a female with such perfect traits, you might put off mating her because you want to pick equally perfect male stock, and get everything set up perfectly for successful offspring-rearing.

I have done this with mollies, using the wild Sailfin Mollies I've caught in ditches, in Mobile, Alabama where I live. I wasn't nearly as dedicated as this koi project, just picked wildly different-looking domestic mollies from pet stores, to see what kind of offspring would result. Some very cool and WEIRD ones, I have to say, ha. The most memorable was a male that grew to extraordinary size, with coloration that looked like neither parents, and a level of aggression in the tank that was less like mollies and more like a betta!

@@Bradybrandwoodno they don’t. You can actually decrease value by adding undesirable visual traits to your koi if you mix their own offspring like that!
@Rosieroothefatcarp14 күн бұрын
Bad idea actually because there’s a chance of the offspring getting the same color as a regular common carp, which means no one wants to buy them.

Though this is not the first. In fact, Sakai Fish Farm in Japan used to be a common carp farm before it became a koi farm in the 1950s. The breeders behind Sakai bred the koi with the magoi(common carp) over the years to develop fast growing koi, that grew larger than many of the koi in their country, especially of the grand champions in Zen Nippon Airinkai kow show over the generations. This is since koi have been inbred a lot of times due to their colors, their size and shape were once largely ignored. Now since the 1990s, jumbo koi like the chagoi, karashigoi, soragoi, and the Big Three (kohaku, sanke and showa) obtain large sizes thanks to the magoi. It's not about the magoi, but the genes of giants and excellence that count to the factor of the offspring.

Does cross breeding with pure Carp DNA improve their ability to fend off potential health issues?
@eugenie86613 жыл бұрын
Widening the genetic pool is likely to produce stronger offsprings, and to reduce the issues linked to inbreeding
@newguy35883 жыл бұрын
yes
@StandardName5623 жыл бұрын
Offcourse, when you inbreed you get recessive diseases. By broadening the DNA pool you will introduce healthy genes which would give rise to healthier specimens. There is no pure carp DNA, what you mean is "wild type" DNA, which is in alot of cases better but dont have the domestication traits we want.
@sleepyninjarin79713 жыл бұрын
@@jorkusmalorkus you can extract DNA from cells to have an amount of "pure DNA" also people can isolate certain genes, with can be considered pure dna
@superdupergrover98573 жыл бұрын
There are also genetic traits, while not a genetic disease per se, that are a liability that are difficult (if possible at all) to work around without new genes.

Hi Atsumi, One of the largest catches I’ve been able to find record of is a 67lb 10oz 47” long common carp caught in 2011.

@@Bradybrandwood Thank you for your quick reply. Matsunosuke's Sakai, who is most famous for these challenges, and Narita's Chagoi (in pale color), which is now seen by everyone his offspring spread throughout the world, all used a 50+ inch Magoi as a single parent. If you don't do something as radical as that, it will simply lead to the decline of your blood as a Nishikigoi, don't you think?

You do realize the Japanese created Koi from common carp years ago right???
@Rosieroothefatcarp13 күн бұрын
@@Bradybrandwood There's actually evidence that koi descended from Amur wild carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus) rather than common carp. Common carp tend to be brownish gold, with bright yellow eyes, a chubby belly or arched back, and sometimes missing scales. Unlike common carp, Amur wild carp are easily tamed, look like the Magoi you showed in the video, and those types of fish have a darker bronze color, and deep brown eyes, as well as a slimmer body shape like that of a koi or Danube wild carp, which is the ancestor of common carp.

I respect this. However, it is a very dangerous game to play against several native species across the Americas. Whether your intentions are monetary, biological, godliness or bragging rights. If you ever intended to sell them to any location, there are people with less means or simply less thoughtful intentions towards preserving separate natural biomes. I know you care about this; I’ve only found you via your altruism towards a lobster.
