This video was insane ! So amazing to see experts of the field discussing together. The last part inspired me for a roundtable: there is almost 15 000 simple hybrids that we potentially can make. How can we know if an hybrid has already been done ? Why some hybrids seems extremely difficult to obtain ?

For Kenny and Drew the name Nepenthes “Viking” came from Surasak Lertwattakarn in 1992. He was the original seller at Chetuchak market in Bangkok that developed they name from the shape of the Viking boat.

In reference to the thought that customers don't want to know the full genetic name, perhaps I'm a nerd but I refuse to purchase if the full parentage isn't listed, it's absolutely necessary information to inform my choices ☺️ I would be distressed if the genetic potential wasn't discussed in some way. This was all so amazing, great information from fantastic growers! Thank you for putting this together and sharing 💚

Amazing video. It's really funny how the dutch are apparently the end game boss for Nepenthes hybrids. The COUNCIL OF THE DUTCH has judged your hybrid to have too long of a tendril... chuck it in the trash lmao.

Interesting video! I'd love a roundtable with experts about sowing Nepenthes the way a regular hobbyist does it. I've read a ton of articles on how to do it, but I just don't have success. The information on the germination time of the seeds is also very varied. Is it less then a month? longer? When should you consider the seeds 'dead'? How long are the seeds viable? There is so much conflicting information out there. I'd love to hear people's methodologies on germinating these plants. I think for most hobbyists the 'intermediate' plants will be the most relevant.

Some seeds can take 5-6 months to germinate. Right now still germinating after 5 month Nepenthes “Razzledazzle x palawanensis a cross I did.

@@CarnivorousplantsOrg1972 That guide was one of the few sources I've seen that mentions that the seeds can take up to a year to germinate. Most others say to give up after a month or 2. Given this comes from the ICPS I give it more credibility than the other sources. I see that it mentions germination temperatures between 26-32C. Is this for lowland specimens? I have mostly intermediate seeds, and some 'low' highlands. Do they also need these temps? I am still a humble windowsill grower in my living room, so heating my room to that temperature won't be fun. 🤣

@@pomcabkhmoy456 This gives me comfort and hope. I have spent quite some money late last year on seeds from multiple species (from a reputable source), and after 3-4 months I stil have nothing. Would you recommend removing the sphagnum moss that overgrows the seeds, or would that be a humidity bonus?

The idea of naming and patent rights was a very hot topic once the breeding got underway. Plant Breeder’s Rights was that if a hybrid resembled the patented plant, it would be considered to be the patented variety with all the limitations about propagation. This started with the Venus Fly Trap ‘Royal Red’. Think some early CPNs had some info. As far as using grex system, the AOS lobbied the International Botanical Nomenclature Committee to use it. If we want to do the same, we could make an application via the ICPS to do it and we have strong reasons why we could administer it. One, precedent. Orchid growers use it so it is legal..just need that extended to ICPS. Second, the ICPS is the ICRA (International Cultivar Registration Authority representative for all CP families and several “allied genera/families”. So ICPS would need to apply to get this done. Another note: Endangered species and CITES. With the advent of micropropagation, growers can produce more plants using plants already in their collection or those collected with permits. Once a facility is certified as producing plants using microprop, the products should be granted the same clearance to move internationally as freely as produce, cut flowers and bulbs, etc. We’re not talking rhinos here. The only paper work needed would be a phytosanitary certification. No cuotas, and other beaurocratic obstacles. We in the Society as well as botanic gardens and arboreta need to lobby to get these laws changed.

Hey Rob do you ship to Canada? Looking for a real (Alata) and Brads Green house doent have any. Thanks from Alberta

Borneo Exotics only sells wholesale, so you will need to find a nursery that carries his items. If the real N. alata is available on the shop then Brad (or anyone who does wholesale in CA) can order 1 or 10 for you.

People are so fruegle with species. Cull all the hybrids and start breeding species for all people to purchase and admire. Funny how main stream breeders say they promote Nepenthes but won't sell species its very odd.

If your a mainstream breeder in the business to make money and you are the only one with certain species and you release those species most likely you’ll end up with many competitors like you bidding for the same customers.

I breed orchids, so I’ll only say breeding species requires that you have conditions for those species-and your buyers should too. How many ppl can grow nepenthes villosa? Whereas villosa hybrids are much easier and more reasonable for hobby growers. I get what you’re saying though…if you see opportunity, it’s a business opportunity that you could fill rather than bagging on someone else for what you feel they’re not doing.

If they did that then someone would just complain that no one breeds hybrids.

The roundtables were closed meetings BUT we are going to be sharing them/publicizing them more on our social media accounts now, so we can get more views. Thank you for the suggestion.
