Your attention to detail and intensity of management is an inspiration! The Dorper population is so small here in Uruguay that I'm crossing Dorper rams to Ile de France ewes (possibly adding Texel ewes) but we run almost exclusively on grass. Zero supplements except for a flushing program we tried. Just hearing that the one thing we do is the one thing you don't do (flushing). Hearing all the troubles you faced is really perplexing. We've faced none of them. Possibly (like Texas longhorn) all weak genetics have perished in the country's flocks. I am blown away but your involvement with your flock. Here, I thought I was being a good shepherd by getting guardian dogs and using rotational grazing.

Thank you for addressing line breeding. All I need to do now is pick up a couple Dorper rams from the ExpoPrado show (going on this week in Montevideo) and I'll be able to close the flock. We will be at 120 ewes (plus this year's lambs) if I add the Texel. With what you shared, 3 rams should be plenty of genetic diversity to get to our goal of shedding sheep. Thank you!

First off, happy to see the Chicken Lady. Wondering if she will be on another virtual meet in the future. Also, curious about your opinion of "clan mating" (i.e. rotating rams between your four ewe groups) to help maintain diversity, and possibly cut down on how often you need to replace your rams.
@theShepherdess5 ай бұрын
I am going to try and convince her to join me soon :). I have considered clan mating given the fact that I have so much diversity with the various lines. I will try to let you know if I have success with it.

Hello, my kids just started showing Dorpers for their school livestock show team. What's the best way to put muscle on the rear of a dorper? Also, any tips on the best way to show a doper? Dorpers are new to shows, and we would love to show dorpers the best we can
@theShepherdess2 ай бұрын
There’s a special “chariot” that show sheep owners will use to build muscle in the backed. I don’t know what it’s called specifically, but maybe that’s a starting place for research!

Hi. I love what you do and I’m super curious on a couple of things. Our family lives in The Bahamas 🇧🇸 and we are passionate about grass fed meat in our life, for our health. I am trying to start something small to be self sufficient “homesteading”. I only have 4 ducks and 2 goats at present. My father purchased a Dorper sheep from someone he knew, who at the time brought it into our country, it was amazing and over time that Ram bred with our local native sheep and 3 gens later from me helping him select the best babies to breed on, we had the best tasting, meaty sheeep ever! If I wanted to purchase a pair of your sheep to breed into my local native sheep here, or cross with a St. Croix (I like how parasite resistant they seem). Could you ship your sheep to FL for live transport on a mailboat (cargo ship?) And on another note, if we wanted to buy whole processed sheep from you to eat, can you ship frozen meat for the same shipping route to FL for a cargo ship to bring to me here in The Bahamas?

I love sheep. My question is what do you do with all the wool? They look like wool sheep but also hair sheep.
@liltexashomestead50835 ай бұрын
Dorpers are hair sheep so no wool. I raise Finnsheep and East Friesians which are wool breeds although my primary intent with them is dairy. Finnsheep have high quality wool that spinners want. I've sold Finn fleece to others to make yarn out of it but may keep this year's fleeces to process for peg looming. East Friesian wool is coarse and not sought after BUT you can use it for insulation, garden mulch, dryer balls, and felting.
@oldvintageflavor5 ай бұрын
@@liltexashomestead5083 I’ve been in love with shropshire sheep since I can remember and I know that Friesians are good for dairy, but did not know about the finnsheep thank you I will look into them
@liltexashomestead50835 ай бұрын
@user-rq5vj5gw8y If you are interested in dairy sheep, find a milky line of Finns, not all Finns are dairy animals. They do not produce as much as East Friesians (EF) do. They are a smaller breed, but they can be bred all year round so with planning you could have milk year round vs 7-9 months with EFs. We enjoy both breeds and have been creating some Finn-Friesian crosses that look to carry best of both breeds.
