I’m pretty sure he was captured by the Calvary soon before Spirit was born. That’s what I know. My theory is that after he was captured he was sold to another ranch or Calvary in another area. Or after he was captured he got loose, and just couldn’t find his way back to Esparanza and Spirit. Edit: Thanks for the likes!

I recently sat and read all 4 Spirit books so the info is quite fresh with me, and I thought I'd share a bit! Esperanza's mother is a buckskin mare named Alma, and Strider's parents are Cedar, a Grulla stallion and an unnamed jet black mare. Then Rain's side of the family is a bit longer. The first book has Bonita (Rain's grandmother) as a gray mare, whose mother was a palomino pinto and her father was a thoroughbred racehorse. Her mate is a palomino stallion named Rafael. Their foal is Sierra, a chestnut mare and Rain's mother. Rain's father is a black and white pinto stallion. His parents are unknown. Regarding Strider's whereabouts, it's implied in the movie and in the book that Esperanza has been leading the herd since Spirit was born. So we're led to believe that he may have passed away some time before Spirit's birth. My personal headcanon (because my universe's Strider and Esperanza have another foal after Spirit) is that he got sick sometime before Spirit grew up and left the herd to prevent the disease from spreading to them. I mainly think so because the herd in the movie seemed quite happy and restful, and would not have been without the protection of a stallion. I highly recommend reading the books by Katherine Duey! They're fun, quick reads as each book is not more than 150 pages, and really expand on the lore of the Spirit universe.

There is an official 1st story draft for Spirit by Dreamworks known as "Schindler's Horse" that got scrapped. (in the end he died in the mines) I like to think That's what happen to his dad instead of Spirit. Small closure and it fits...(with a google search that say's he died in captivity) sad as it is...plus official story line from the company. v

In horse herds it's typically the Lead Mare who takes the lead while the Lead Male trails behind driving the herd forward and picking up any stragglers. He guards their back while trusting his lead mare to guide the rest of the herd

The colors you were wondering about with Reveng is that he was a dark chestnut with a single cream dilution which made him lighten into a nice golden color. The cream color showed for dilution is not the color the coat will be, just that it will be lighter. (There is a light and darker version of both the gray and the cream dilute, the difference between the golden colors and the light palominos) Edit: the golden color you keep getting is actually just a dark palomino! (Because it is a chestnut with one cream dilute)

that's such a good explanation! the variations between bays, palominos and chestnuts can be explained by the genes the parents have, which could (!) be: Strider: E/e (one gene. would it be E/E, all offspring would be bays. the E gene makes a horse with no other genes black. with an A gene, it makes a bay) a/a (Strider is a black horse, with no other genes) Esperanza: e/e (no black gene, palominos are based on a chestnut) A/A (two genes, so both parents would've had one or two copies. as i already mentioned, palominos are based on chestnuts and a chestnut comes with only an A gene. two copies mean, that every offspring will have one copy of the gene. that explains, why there was no black) CR/n (one copy of the gene. CR/CR makes an cremello. one copy makes the chestnut offspring a palomino.) also, she could have an SW1 gene, because of the socks and the huge blaze, but i wouldn't consider it Spirit would have these: E/e A/a CR/n buckskins are bays with one copy of a cream gene SO! It is completely possible (of course, duh), like Comedy showed us, but Abigail was just not lucky xD hope it was not that complicated, just wanted to add a few gene facts

E with a gives black, E with A gives bay. A red horse is ee, and the agouti status doesn’t affect red pigments. So, esperanza could be ee/aa, ee/Aa or ee/AA. But as Spirit is bay based, one of his parents has passed it. It can’t be his dad, otherwise he wouldn’t be black but bay. So the A has to come from Esperanza, wich is then ee/Aa or ee/AA

If you think "like a horse", Strider was most likely cast out of the herd as Spirit took over. As in nature there is only one lead stallion in the herd and for that being Spirit there would be no room for his dad~ (also thinking that those 2 foals in his herd are his, cause there is no other stallion around) My theorie.

Also, if the 2 foals were Spirits dads, then he still would have been present within the herd. But seeing as it was only Spirit in the herd, if you want to get technical and if the movie is accurate with herds and stuff, the 2 foals would have been Spirits

I’m in the middle of reading the books. I’m in the final one now, I will tell what happens to Strider when I get there. Also. Esperanza’s mother was a buckskin with “a pretty face” named Alma, Strider’s father was a grullo with no markings, and his mother was a black horse with some markings. The book isn’t exactly specific as to what kinds of markings. Esperanza’s dad is entirely unknown, but they’re all mustangs so far as I can tell.

It only confirms that Strider and Esperanza find the valley we know in the movies, but there’s no tale as to how they gathered an entire herd, or what happened to Strider or why he’s not present for his son. The books are also not strangers to addressing death, so I’m very very upset!

I always kinda thought at first that Strider was beaten by Spirit and left the herd as they do in the wild. However later on I figured that it's more likely that he died at some point as it wasn't common for man to show up often given how Spirit never saw Man in his life until they began to settle close to his Homeland. (Then again given how Spirit's mom reacted to him being caught, it could be possible that Man did show up at some point and captured before he was born) Also fun fact: In the deleted scenes Spirit was meant to fight another "Mystery" Stallion to protect his leadership over the herd instead of the Mountain Lion scene as a way to show how life was like for a Lead Stallion.

The Spirit (with a blaze)'s lineage is he is the son of Spirit and Rain, grandson of Esparanza and Strider. A small bit of his background is that he was born in the wild and grew up with Spirit and Rain. Then one day when he was racing with his friends against a train, he met a girl who changed his life. They became best friends and Spirit Jr. let her ride him. But he still was a wild horse so he never let rope near him and always had to check on his herd every now and then, along with sleeping with them.

Palominos are sorrels with a cream gene so the red with the dilution is actually correct. Which I’m impressed with. You also can have many shades of palominos as you can a sorrel or a bay. Very impressed on how the game functions regarding real genetics in horses.

My theory is that he was captured by the Calvary and was broken and became their own horse. In the scene where spirit is captured, you see a horse being rode that looks likes strider. I’m pretty sure, I haven’t watched the movie in awhile, that horse helped spirit let the horses out but stayed behind. Now crossing over to the real world, the son would challenge the dad into a fight for the mares and the herd. So my guess is maybe Strider had another son that beat him, but than that son passed taking care of the herd. That’s when Esperanza took over the herd. Obviously strider would know spirit since it would be his scent and none elses. So really, strider couldn’t have passed because there are foals in the movie that other mares probably brother from strider. I’m sure one of those mares birthed a colt. The colt bear strider, and strider went on his own. Him becoming on his own, he let his defenses down which causing him to get caught. ❤loved dawn! That’s my theory

Fiction as a colt looks kinda like the colt we have at my barn! His name is Dublin and his nicknames are ELM (Evil Little Marshmallow), Dubs, Dubsies, and Biter lol, he’s only a few months old (around 3 now) and he can already line up a jump perfectly, do flying lead changes, and land like a champ, so we think we’ll try and train him to jump since he’s got such raw talent.

Here's a brief description of strider: The black horse in Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is Spirit's dad, named Strider. He doesn't actually appear in the movie, as he died before the storyline begins. Spirit briefly mentions him when he grows up and takes over as the leader of the herd.
