Bro instead of using rocks as a drainage layer get clay ball aka leca. They way lighter and they're cheap. They work way better than rocks. You can get them at any aquaponics store.

It's not your fault that the vendor couldn't be honest. In business honesty is the best policy. Your only accountability is only held by your lack of knowledge and not be able to identify them. We all do it we aren't all crab experts. But the vendor is 100% to blame. He knew he was upselling you on them. Regardless of weather you actually have the knowledge to take care of them. Imagine if they dumped these guys on a child they would be dead in 2 days. Glad you got them!!!

Unfortunately, Halloween crabs aren’t able to be bred in captivity, because despite being land crabs, they must return to the ocean to spawn
@wm-fm1ts3 жыл бұрын
So do hermit crabs, and now several people have bred those in captivity! You need a very large cage and a saltwater area for them
@Rinkyu2 жыл бұрын
Ooh maybe a half freshwater, half saltwater and land terrarium would work
@coppersuraniumden198511 ай бұрын
I believe breeding them in captivity is possible, keepers just don't care enough to try lmao. Not a halloween crab, but a keeper in South korea was able to breed a species that has a similar breeding behavior (i.e. returning to the sea to breed), Cardisoma carnifex.

Years ago I bought what I thought were kuhli loaches. I was pretty inexperienced, and they were labeled as such, but they turned out to be YoYo loaches. VERY different, lol. 7 years later they are all still alive and doing fine. Biggest one is probably 7in at this point. Had to make some adjustments as they got bigger, but I've learned so much and that's what this hobby is about!

What an awesome build. I know I always say this but this is my favorite. Those three crabs are so lucky! Someone else would’ve made a meal out of them. How’s their temperament compared to the fiddlers?

Hey bro this looks great. I will let you know that I think they want a little more dirt. I have mine in 6 inches and they burrow tunnels all the way down. They can burrow like 5 ft down. Lol. So I would have done a little deeper. But it looks great. About how many inches of dirt do you think they have?
@christopher_scott3 жыл бұрын
It’s about 4-6 inches. When I do a deep clean, I’m going to add about 6 more inches for them. Right now they can burrow and fully cover themselves which is how they spend most of their time.
@MrDJsArcade3 жыл бұрын
@@christopher_scott nice nice. I liked your other set up too. Did they ever go in the water in the other one? Keep in mind, they’re nocturnal. So if you set up a camera with some low light or moonlight bulb you might get some cool action.

Yes those are definitely Halloween Moon Crabs! Vampire crabs are tiny!! Halloween crabs love to burrow deep! Much better set up but I think you may need deeper substrate in some areas so they can burrow deeper! Also, not sure what size tank you have there but a 20 gallon long is sufficient for 1 crab but it’s not recommended to keep only 1 they are actually social and thrive much better in pairs or small groups so you do need a larger tank that 20g. Possibly a 40g long or larger. And some deep substrate areas for burrowing! Also, I saw 2 water bowls, was one salt water and one fresh water?? They need both. But you’re enclosure looks great with the plants and everything! I admire the fact that you took responsibility and want to take the best possible care of these guys! I can’t believe that the guy who was selling them didn’t even know what he was selling!!! That’s pretty scary! And sad!
@ThatOneCorvusKing2 жыл бұрын
He states the tank is a 40 gallon breeder and the dishes are one fresh and one salt water, and there's three crabs, so I think he did all right by those standards, but you didn't even watch the video

Vampire crabs are totally different from Halloween crabs. Vampire crabs are fresh water. Halloween crabs/Halloween moon crabs need both fresh and saltwater. H. crabs lay there larvae in saltwater and mating and growing them out has not yet been down in captivity. Halloween crabs are a big species and vampire crabs are a small crab like the fiddler or red clawed crab.

Really the fact of the matter is you always should get a scientific name. Unless you're experienced with the breed and have no doubt about what it is it can be a real crap shoot. Common names can change from town to town, state to state and country to country. Species are wrongfully mistaken pretty often from their common names.
