Brehon Law on Uisneach Hill (Kevin Flanagan at Uisneach Fire Festival 2015)

Kevin Flanagan discusses Ireland's ancient Brehon Laws on the Hill of Uisneach, Westmeath, as part of the Uisneach Fire Festival 2015 (uisneach.ie).
'Brehon Law' refers to an ancient system of justice that was prevalent in Ireland for 1000's of years prior to its conquest. Hailed as a true justice system this restituionary based approach for justice rested with the very will of the people.
Uisneach Hill is among Ireland's most sacred ancient sites. For millennia Druids, Warriors, Poets, and Kings gathered at this Hill as a place of ceremony, worship, and the pronouncement of important laws and customs. Its primary feast was Bealtaine or the Festival of the Bright-Fire, where all fires in all the land were left extinguished on May 1st only for the first great fire of Summer to be lit by the Druids upon Uisneach Hill. Representatives of Clans and Tuatha from all over the land would travel here to gather fire and embers. Bringing these to their homelands every fire in the country was then said to have been lit by the first fire of Summer.
Here, Kevin Flanagan discusses the Brehon Law, Irish mythology, the rights of women in early Ireland, and the need to consider the old ways for guidance in today's uncertain world.

Kevin this is great, one day you will succeed, may we rekindle some of our old ways, to better our local communities and environment. We would be much happier and indeed add more to the unique characte of Ireland and her people if we started to integrate Brehon laws and principles back into our way of live. Imagine every tree being protected and given levels of security as to each species. District Courts using Brehon law instead of Crown. Our local communities are lacking in inclusion for everyone, I think we put to much into the design of our homes and lose focus on the design of our local areas, Parks, outside areas. Perhaps we can learn from Brehon manuscripts on this too. Regards Ronnie

I was so upset I missed your talk at Uisneach, delighted you uploaded it! And you're absolutely right, the the laws are still about within our modern culture. My hens broke out and ate my neighbours veg patch like locusts. Its only right he got their eggs for the next while! Keep up the fantastic work and if you ever want to learn more about why the trees fit into their sections, come for a walk with me! From the Nobles to the forest floor, the Brehon laws covered it all!

I studied law in college but until now I'd never heard of the Brehon Law. It's fascinating to me. My mother's side is irish (O Laoghaire), but I grew up in England in a very patriarchal religious family and only heard about the ancestry on the male side. The older women I grew up with were extremely submissive and only valued as housewives, so I'd never heard much about my grandmother. Then she died when I was in my teens and I had no way to ask. I never felt right in the culture/religion I was born into and now I feel as if I have this whole other side of my identity to explore that makes 100% more sense to me! I'm a die-hard libertarian and hate big government, but I'm all about community. So Brehon Laws are a much better fit. Thank you so much for making this channel. I'm binge watching every video on here! ; D

Does this Academy have a certificate program? I live in America, but I'm certain I've had lifetimes in the Eire. I'm being asked by my Guidance to learn this system and bring it to my community and plant seeds of arbitration through Eldership to rebirth our Communities at a grassroots level. I need to learn more about how I can accomplish this without too much insidiousness from our current legal system because whenever I set foot in a courtroom here, I feel like screaming!!!! I know I can offer better arbitration than these bloody fools and be a trustworthy Elder. I am much much older than I look...lol!

Why for anarchocapitalists, the brehon system was anarchocapitalistic? I dont see it raely. Becouse you see - there were not any anarchy, and there were not any capitalism there. Every person lived on some stage of hierarchic society, about 16 or more personal levels of status there were then. So it was not anarchy, it was strict hierarchic system, though "states" were little and not very complicated - its true, And the first loyaty any was oblidged for was for his kindred, clan, and clan leader, and only the second loyalty was for his priest (I guess earlier it was a druid), and the third was for his king or chief. And there was not any banks or virtual money, and the money were cows and slaves mostly not coins so there was not any kind of capitalism there also. Maybe if one can assume that capitalism means that you can sell and buy anything including people, yes it was this kind of capitalism hehe :)

We need to change our legal system. We need to do something & I have 200 ppl in Crumlin who would live outside the dail😁. Religion will not let us win but we will win. Good always does even it takes 1700 years or 2000 years
