"English" laws evolved from the Magna Carta, written in French, which the Franco Normans gifted to the defeated Germanic Angles and Saxons post Hastings 1066. The Magna Carta was intended to both introduce French laws to England and respond to complaints from the remaining Anglo Saxon aristocracy that their rights were being violated under Franco Norman rule. The Franco Normans saw the Magna Carta, which incorporated traditional Saxon Germanic laws, as being a useful tool to accelerate the assimilation of the conquered Germanic and Viking peoples of England under an agreed and more equitable legal system that reflected "ancient" and legacy rights to their traditions and land ownership. The Magna Carta was also a pivotal tool to creating a more peaceful England where the Franco Normans could count on securing alliances with the leading Germanic and Viking families.

Fantastic info, maybe you read it - Graeber's Debt: The first 5000 yrs. Big section in it about Ireland, explaining the good, the bad and the ugly of the old ways. Of course the books main concentration stays focused only on debt. Be interested in you addressing it.

Without a doubt this is a fascinating topic. But I don't believe that we should project modern classical liberal or neoliberal ideology on to the ancient Irish.
