That's absolutely the point. Don't show your true colors, right, but do provide a reference point for others to support heavily prejudiced views and agendas. All their stories skew things just a bit (or sometimes quite significantly) but at the same time claim to be factual. I mean, if you want to tell a convincing lie, you tell the truth but just leave out the bits you don't like and _imply_ rather than state what you want people to take away from it. The way you deal with bad ideas is to air them out completely, explore them honestly and openly, then watch them collapse under their own weight as the overwhelming majority of people make the right decision with the now easily available, and readily apparent as true, information.

The difference between Buzzfeed and Breitbart is this. We might be critical of Buzzfeed's emphasis in a story. They might show only one side of an argument that has many. They might gin up something to make it more controversial than it really is. But if they say X did Y to Z, you know those elements existed. Breitbart is strictly agitprop, and tends to be completely made up from scratch. Both the ACORN and Sherrod stories were lies - they weren't "mistaken", they didn't emphasise something too much. They made the stories up. About people. In order to get their readers to hate them. For a political purpose. That's not "journalism", that's propaganda.
@longliverocknroll56 жыл бұрын
"But if they say X did Y to Z, you know those elements existed" I don't. Because even if they manage to stumble upon the correct events, they politicize it and provide false motives, assumptions and bullshit to obfuscate reality. Excessively over-inflating or exaggerating a story is no different than inventing a story as they both have a conclusion routed in propaganda.

It was concluded the videos were heavily edited to taken answers out of context and that no criminal activity occurred. Not that it mattered Acorn was tried in the court of public opinion and lost its large donors and its government funding which caused the organization to close. Which is sad since they mainly helped poor people avoid predatory loans and obtain affordable housing.

This may fly over your head if you aren't familiar with the conversation around prison reform, but "Blacks are not only more violent offenders but more prolific offenders and thus warrant no sympathy that would result in prison reform." is not only what we would call racist (given that there have been various arguments and data to otherwise contextualize this as a symptom of poverty, not race, that they so graciously ignore in this article) but a strawman of the prison reform argument. Staging the negative traits as more outstanding in or inherent to an outgroup, especially in a political setting, is textbook racism.

I'm watching this in July of 2020 and find it extremely -I can't find the right word. Pretentious? Out of date? Out of touch? After what we have been subjected to for the last 4 years, there are so called news organizations that make this commentary seem childish. Let me put it this way. This commentary seems like the thoughts of a fresh soldier who just got his gun vs someone who has been in the trenches and seen it's hell for 4 years. I would love to see you revisit this topic and see how it has held up over time. Personally I don't watch Breitbart News. In fact I don't watch network news at all. I don't even have cable TV. I gave up on it all. I cut the cord many years ago. Internet only now. What would be nice is to see a comparison of ALL the "news" groups with a critical eye to their truthfulness. @mikael87637 жыл бұрын
he's white you know...
@leotamer57 жыл бұрын
Ok, it seems like Shaun King racial ethnicity is a bit up in the air. From what I read from a seemingly pretty balanced article, I could look more into this but I don't care that much to go through all of the evidence to find out the race of a single man because as I will get to later, it doesn't really matter. According to his birth certificate, both of his parents are white. However, he claims that he is actually the son of a black man who had an affair with his mother. So, a bit of he said, she said. Without a DNA test, it really just if you believe Shaun King or not, which I don't think is good enough to go either way. Based on the article, the only pieces of evidence either way is some pictures of his youth where some people claim he is looks more white, while other say he looks more mixed. And a police report where he was marked as "white" though it appeared the only two options was either black or white, and he also claims that there is more context than given with just the police report. Again, a bit of he said, she said. However, it doesn't really matter. Even if he was born to a black man, he is most passing black man there is. And this actually raises an interesting question, what makes a person "black". If it is having any black ancestor, then we probably are all black. Is there are a certain number of ancestors back, so if your father or grandfather is black, you are black. Well, by that logic we are still all black. Because it will still just pass on the black. Is there is a certain threshold of melanin that you need to have in your body? If so, how much? Is the concept of black and white now pretty irrelevant in terms of actually defining anything further than a basic appearance of a person? Probably. I mean he does have the nose that you except from a person of African origin. Is it the shape of your nose that determines if you are black or not?
@ChucksSEADnDEAD7 жыл бұрын
Shaun King deserved everything he got.
@mikael87637 жыл бұрын
Nah man, you made an interesting comment, well read but he certainly is Hwhite. I don't negate the fact that he may have some african-american genes or influence in his face but even mixed people from 3 generations look more black than him. If it is true that his mother had an affair, her "white" genes certainly got the upper hand in the zygote.

Shaun King claimed that he got those scars on his face from when he was attacked by a group of white students in college. Police reports years later state that actually he got those scars in a car accident that he caused when trying to retrieve a CD from the glove compartment of his car. Shaun King is an extremist and above all a racist, there is a reason why TYT fired him within 2 weeks of him being there.

I think the issue with articles enumerating the pitfalls inherent to "blaming the system" for disproportionate race representation among the incarcerated is that it introduces detrimental complexity to the process of prioritizing analytical criteria. The pertinent question is "why is the number of black ppl in jail so disproportionately high?" How one approaches that question is inextricably linked to how one prioritizes the likelihood of possible causes. Are they possessed by aliens? Can't truly rule it out, but maybe let's check something else first. An article saying it might be "more than just broken "system" seems about as useful as asking if your tire pressure is correct while your car is on fire.

My main problem with Breitbart is not that it's "racist" or whatever. My problem with it is that it's so obviously biased, and a lot of the stuff that I have read on the site has contained some misleading information (or at least things that are very easily interpreted in the way that you get a totally wrong kind of picture of the story). It basically feels like right wing propaganda. Their reporting is also very selective. If they write something about Muslims, it's always something negative. Is it "Islamophobia" if those stories are true? Well, I guess technically not, but when they are so selective about their reporting, it's pretty obvious that they want their audience to think in a certain way about Muslims. It's the same thing with stuff like "black on black crime" and the "low IQ of black people". If you are only reporting on black people in a negative way, yes, that could be interpreted as "racism". The individual stories are not racist - it has more to do with the selective reporting. There's nothing wrong with having a bias. But if one gets all of their information and bases their whole worldview on what they read on Breitbart (and other sites that have a strong bias one way or the other), that's not a good thing. Yes, everybody is biased but there are definitely sites that are more neutral and then there are sites that have a strong bias (like Breitbart). If you are reading news on sites that have a strong bias, you need to be really critical of what they say, and at least check the sources that they use. But probably my views of Breitbart are also somewhat biased, since I haven't read a lot of their articles. But the articles I have read have not made me want to read more of their stuff. Their worldview is just so different compared to mine, and reading their articles basically feels like reading propaganda.
@BrandonMoore-tf2dj7 жыл бұрын
I used to be on board with Breitbart until this last election cycle. Though I have lost my faith in most publications over the years. I now fallow specific journalists as I tend to believe they are "unbiased" until proven otherwise.

I don't understand his belief that American media is "anti-Israel." I have never once heard a negative statement about Israel said on MSNBC or CNN, which is who I assume he's talking about.

It is very difficult to find objective critique on right-wing entities, when most just refer to them as racists or bigots who do not deserve your time. Nothing is black and white, it never has been, and diversifying the sources you get information from can lead to very intriguing observations. You start to see the agenda in whatever you read, because there always is one, however minor. It also leads to getting a better picture of the facts. If you check the news from three different sources, you’re likely that the combined story is closer to the actual truth. So I enjoyed this video a lot. Big thumbs up! Speaking of enjoyment, this comment section is almost as entertaining as the video was. People that lack self-awareness are the most entertaining part, especially the ones who sit on very high horses.

as the world through the TV was changing, some households were bubbled off from this zeitgeist; identities wrapped in the concept of their ideas/feelings being prioritized over everyone else's.someone came and said "your bubble is valid" and impressionable children who were told pandering versions of reality/history now have grown. this is breitbart's audience.
@WordUnheard7 жыл бұрын
But you said you were going to talk about violent imagery and gore in film, for your next video. What gives?
@cropcircle56937 жыл бұрын
So lets get this straight. When you deliberately skew the portrayal of an issue in order to confuse the discussion, that is (at very least) poor journalism. When you do it to directly inflame racial tensions and give talking points to racist causes, that is racist. That is the moment that you side with the racist cause. Breitbart is a racist organisation. Playing dumb with this reality is not clever and is only fooling the racists into thinking that we don't see who they are.

Breitbart maintained that his focus in the Sherrod piece was on the NAACP audience which applauded her after she said she rejected the white farmer and before she said she came around to helping the white farmer. Breitbart said that this was posted in response to the NAACP claim without evidence that the TEA Party was racist. He was showing that the NAACP may also show signs of racism themselves.

Something lost in the Shirley Sherrod controversy was that the target was not her but the audience which cheered on the earlier part of the story, but the overall press coverage largely ignored that to make it about her whether they were part of the outrage mob or defending her.

@@outlawscar3328 You don't have to be neutral to disagree with false dichotomies.
@outlawscar33284 жыл бұрын
@@atimholt Well I definitely agree with you there. Two is not enough. In fact, it's just such a horrible conceptual idea that I'm appalled that it's never seriously challenged. Imagine if there were only two cell phone companies left in the world (not that we're far from it). As long as one announces a price for service, the other only has to be slightly cheaper to win consumers in that moment. So if one of those two is ruthlessly exploitative and overcharges far beyond what's reasonable, the other can still be beyond reasonable or fair but will win only because it's presently not as bad. But there will always be parties of some kind. People don't have the means or time to research every last candidate and know how they feel on every last issue. There will always be some categorization of political ideas and those in common will donate to/volunteer for/promote others with similar ideas.

Just want to take a minute from the discussion about breitbart and the right or left to say this was a really great video. I think you made a valliant effort to look at things as neutrally as possible. It was interesting to hear the background and history of things, as well as to have genuinely base level information displayed as just that. Information. You brought up accusations toward the site with an analysis of the site itself without trying to read into whatever side you may prefer. In fact, the only stance you seemed to "read into" was that of neutrality. Very good quality vid. I was trying to watch it to see where you'd try injecting opinion, and was surprised to see it was objective. Not many people who claim to do so actually hit the mark!

Sensory descriptions with no facts or basis in even remote objectivity? So feelings? It "feels" racist, maybe, but can you *prove* it's racist. That's the point. To call something racist without being able to prove it's racist, defeats the purpose and nuance of language entirely.

I think you've missed a trick here, while calling Breitbart racist is not really helpful to anyone, there is still some truth to it. You called Buzzfeed racist for drawing attention to racial differences, but the issue with Racism isn't that people hold different views about different groups of people but instead that a system exists in which one group of people are disadvantaged compared to another. And Breitbart while it never says anything overtly racist it does, help to prop up racial prejudices and a racist system by reporting facts in a certain way.

TRIGGERED!!!
@youtubeuser21887 жыл бұрын
Gareth Williams You're changing the definition of racism so it can fit Breitbart into it. Racism has nothing to do with power struggles. Racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed at someone of a different race which is exactly what buzzfeed does. Breitbart uses facts when reporting while buzzfeed doesn't, there's a distinct difference between the two on race. While Breitbart can help set up racial prejudices the same can be said about buzzfeed and that's really more of issue within the reader not the writers. You're clearly see racism everywhere even in facts if you think we live in a racist system.
@leotamer57 жыл бұрын
Breitbart is biased. Everyone is biased, though Breitbart is particularly biased. As is a sad state of modern news. You can manipulate facts by presenting them in different lights and such. However, I don't think it has the brainwashing power of making not racist people suddenly think, "Maybe I should get a rope and hang blackie." I also want a definition of what a "racist system" is. Is a system where one race benefits at the expense of another? Yeah, we have those. It is called affirmative action. (Which I also think is bad because it is the bigotry of low expectation and in its extreme it can cause people who really shouldn't be somewhere because they utterly lack the skills needed to be there)
@godemperorofmankind72557 жыл бұрын
So Buzzfeed, the gutter of the internet, isn't racist, even though it divides people by race on things as unimportant as skin color. I thought Martin Luther King Jr. wanted to unite us, not divide us. I wonder what he would think of Buzzfeed?
