Chris Hedges and John Kiriakou discuss the CIA, how it has evolved, how it sees its mission, what it does, how it works, and the effects of its clandestine operations around the globe.
John Kiriakou worked for the CIA from 1990 to 2004, first as an analyst, and later as a counterterrorism operations officer overseas in Bahrain, Athens, and Pakistan, where he was the CIA’s Chief of Counterterrorist Operations. He became the sixth whistleblower indicted under the Espionage Act by the Obama administration and was sent to prison for two and a half years.

This was an interesting session that definitely highlighted some salient points about the CIA. I enjoy Chris Hedges and have almost read all of his books. However I think it would be unwise to take everything at face value about the CIA kind of stumbling into mismanagement, assassinations, and lack of oversight since 9/11. The predecessor to the CIA, the OSS founded in 1942, under Roosevelt was the same criminal, entity. It allowed drugs to be sold into poor African American neighborhoods to fund the secret war against communism in Europe. There is no evidence to suggest this has ended. This is about institutionalizing plunder, murder, exploitation, and sin in secrecy, and will not end just because you close the door of the CIA. I hope that Chris could one day interview someone like Doug Valentine, I think personally his CIA knowledge is more holistic and comprehensive.

EXACTLY this Rashad. Reminded of Michael Parenti, an excerpt from his piece Mystery: How Wealth Creates Poverty which I think can be easily extrapolated in its direct and plain language to illuminate your more than apt contention (highly recommend anyone interested in this angle to check out the full piece which fleshes all this out far more, merely trying to condense the point I think Rashad is getting at): _In their perpetual confusion, some liberal critics conclude that foreign aid and IMF and World Bank structural adjustments “do not work”; the end result is less self-sufficiency and more poverty for the recipient nations, they point out. Why then do the rich member states continue to fund the IMF and World Bank? Are their leaders just less intelligent than the critics who keep pointing out to them that their policies are having the opposite effect?_ _No, it is the critics who are stupid not the western leaders and investors who own so much of the world and enjoy such immense wealth and success. They pursue their aid and foreign loan programs because such programs do work. The question is, work for whom? Cui bono?_ _The purpose behind their investments, loans, and aid programs is not to uplift the masses in other countries. That is certainly not the business they are in. The purpose is to serve the interests of global capital accumulation, to take over the lands and local economies of Third World peoples, monopolize their markets, depress their wages, indenture their labor with enormous debts, privatize their public service sector, and prevent these nations from emerging as trade competitors by not allowing them a normal development._ _In these respects, investments, foreign loans, and structural adjustments work very well indeed._ _The real mystery is: why do some people find such an analysis to be so improbable, a “conspiratorial” imagining? Why are they skeptical that U.S. rulers knowingly and deliberately pursue such ruthless policies (suppress wages, rollback environmental protections, eliminate the public sector, cut human services) in the Third World? These rulers are pursuing much the same policies right here in our own country!_ _Isn’t it time that liberal critics stop thinking that the people who own so much of the world---and want to own it all---are “incompetent” or “misguided” or “failing to see the unintended consequences of their policies”? You are not being very smart when you think your enemies are not as smart as you. They know where their interests lie, and so should we._ Conversely, William Casey, -demonic arcon- CIA Director under Reagan, also comes to mind, in his hubris unambiguously describing the intended efficacy of Operation Mockingbird, _"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false."_ Surely he's giving two big thumbs up in hell, which at this point is probably hard to distinguish from the world he helped create for us...ubiquitously inundated via a technologically mediated digital spectacle that effectively keeps us systemically paralyzed in an individually insulated social miasma of reaction, tragedy, and farce... But uh...pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will...or something lol... Actually, if anyone's interested, I'm recalling Parenti's lecture on Conspiracy and Class Power gets at the CIA angle far more directly and I think is also a great breakdown of the social gaslighting and correspondingly cultivated ideological lacunas/compartmentalization that constantly erode our confidence/imagination to act/organize effectively toward any sort of collective escape velocity by reinforcing a broader historical understanding and continuity which necessarily breaks down and overrides any artificially imposed mental barriers through a concrete existential "dasein" communion with the larger scope of history and by extension each other, ie anchoring of our unique experience situated within this particular time/space to a broader class consciousness - in the same sort of guiding world spirit principle of universal justice Chris so eloquently speaks to, but rooted from a more marxist perspective of dialectical/historical materialism, if that made any sense lol...: youtu (dot) be/t21UZxRYYA4 _"The ultimate hidden truth of the world is that it is something we make and could just as easily make differently."_ - the late great David Graeber *Socialism or [continued] barbarism.*

This is one of the most fascinating interviews I've ever seen Chris Hedges do. I guess I'm particularly fascinated because I've been a fan of "spy" shows & movies since the mid-1960s, and in the late 80s-early 90s wrote a series of "crime comedies" that at times involved members of the CIA and FBI. Even back then, in my stories, the FBI tended to look down on the CIA as being "less moral". These days, both organizations have proven to be so. Also, funny enough, John Kiriakou actually reminds me of a friend I used to work with in the 1980s, who was very friendly and good-natured, and used to joke in ways that suggested he had some kind of "secret" connections he wasn't allowed to talk about. Watching this interview is almost like having a reunion with my old friend, who I lost touch with back in the 90s.

I've been deep in the rabbit hole with the JFK assassination and Watergate and kept asking myself: are these acts of deep conspiracy and independent political interest the mistakes of the past or has the CIA's kept the same general ethos until today? This gave me some insight into that question. Thank you. Can't believe they sent this guy to jail.

I was disappointed that two highly lauded "heroes" of First Amendment rights, one a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and the other a CIA agent turned whistle-blower ended their discussion with a resounding mutually agreed upon dismissal of any notion of CIA involvement in JFK's assassination, even joking and laughing about one of the most shocking, heart breaking events in our nation's history. Truly left a foul odor.

I've always stated that when the CIA used lunatics like Elie Homolka (yes, he of the Sabra and Shatila infamy) to try and assassinate Fadlallah in Beirut in 1985, and instead blew up and killed 80 schoolgirls leaving a Mosque trying to do so (they completely missed Fadlallah, who most people now agree was not responsible for the barracks bombing of the Marines in 1983, which is why he was targeted), that that should have been the last straw for the long and infamous nefarious acts of the CIA/OSS, and they should have been shut down. Instead, when I say that, most people look at me with a puzzled look because they have no idea what I'm talking about which says a lot about what the public is told and not told in regard to what these maniacs are doing all over the world.

Be careful. You might get people openly debating whether Call of Duty is "social engineering" caged as entertainment. Or it could just be that too many people (armchair warriors, SJWs, etc) watching mainstream media are losing sight of where reality ends and the game script begins. Potayto potahto? Tomayto tomato? Maybe toss in some Onion for good measure and call the ensuing shit show "dinner theater"? I don't know about you but anymore I have to wonder how much of anything is skew(er)ed. Is it any wonder that people are clamouring over whether there's any meat to it? 🤔 TL;DR: If bad puns were a crime, would the CIA still exist? Would it have ever existed?

What is astounding, I worked very hard on myself to NOT repeat the abuse and dysfunction I bathed in in the "family" AND community in the 70s into the 80s. I had to pay suck close attention to NOT attracting abusers as partners. And yet those in "power" not only attract but, WANT Sociopaths! Who will do their bidding without consequences or accountability

The police invaded my home, and my clearance was suspended for having this declassified report. My clearance was reinstated, but it was a horrible experience and left a sour taste.

Most jobs I had from the 80s until the early 2000s, dialogue about religion and politics was prohibited, in some places you were written up, 3 write ups, you're fired. Government employment has changed quite a bit.

So depressing I can’t possibly finish it. With all these in the open, why nothing is being done to make these people accountable? Now that would be a notable, noble result of all these exposures.

I cant believe the ex-analyst cant see that the goal in Afghanistan was to make money for the US weapons manufacturers and when Soviets left, so did the US government's capitalists' interest

The foremost goal was, by radicalising the Islamic youth into becoming the Mujahedeen and interfering with the work of the Afgani government in Kabul (there's a mention of 1977, while the Soviet intervention took place in December of 1979), making the running of the country next to impossible, was enticing the Soviet Union into a military incursion (on the request of the Afgani government). A carefully laid out trap which, in the decades that followed, misfired.

Hey Chris, I'm sure that you know the true story of Frank Olson's death. That he was thrown out a window, not that he jumped high on LSD. It's covered in detail in the Netflix series "Wormwood". Frank Olson's son did a lot of hard work to be sure that his father's legacy wouldn't be besmirched with a CIA cover story for his assassination.

Give a person or an organization power and we know that they more often than not take advantage of this power. Very scary!

At this point in time, anything goes. Since apparently there are no forces above it all capable of neutralizing the abusers on all sides We're being dragged in their putrid mindset without knowing where it will bring us all. Certainly not a good place. John Kiriakou is incredibly detached for a guy who spent 2½ years in jail as a whistleblower, which is short compare to some others, like Chelsea Manning or Julian Assange who already spent the equivalent of a decade either in confinement or jail without charge.

Great talk glad I found your channel I have many questions but 2 I have (really 1 actual concerning question and another is just a curiosity) 1. Would it be legal for the CIA/Intel Agencies/Gov to fund Troll Farms tasked with directly engaging US voters on sites like Twitter? Can US tax payer funds go to fund operations that target US tax payers? 2. Is there any question that both ISI and AlQaeda were cofunding terror groups, or more realistically that Pakistan ISI used AlQaeda in the exact same manner that US CIA uses AlQaeda as a convenient consistent cutouts in order to fund/arm other more distasteful “extremist groups” as we saw in Syria and other places? AlQaeda being more acceptable to do business with because the only people they attack of Americans/Europeans/Iranians while making sure they do not ever target Israel (which again is a very curious situation as well and makes one wonder how much of AlQaeda ever actually existed and how much of it was was simply a political tool that was quite responsive to Saudi influence.
