Chris Hedges and John Kiriakou discuss the CIA, how it has evolved, how it sees its mission, what it does, how it works, and the effects of its clandestine operations around the globe.
John Kiriakou worked for the CIA from 1990 to 2004, first as an analyst, and later as a counterterrorism operations officer overseas in Bahrain, Athens, and Pakistan, where he was the CIA’s Chief of Counterterrorist Operations. He became the sixth whistleblower indicted under the Espionage Act by the Obama administration and was sent to prison for two and a half years.

SILVER Backs took the shot almost simultaneously. Thin air government approved counterfeit backed by nothing doesn't even meet the definition of money. They just sell books and speaking dates and performances. You can tell that Chris Hedges was a trained Christain clergy, he foams at the mouth once he gets going on an indoctrinating rant. Wat too much talk, and NOT enough action. There is nothing but death voting for the donor owned GOP, Democratic, No Labels, and Libertarian parties. There is truth in action at the Green party, the only REAL progressive party that has ZERO donor money. Where these so-called Progressives. They are status quo political rift profiteers. HOW CHRIS HEDGES FAILED US When will someone bigger than I have the balls to call this man out for going back on his word? Many times he has urged us to resist tyranny, even when things look bleak ... but now that tyranny is in our face, he's MIA ... Let us review a few of his more revealing quotes: "I don't think we're going to stop the pandemic and the mutations until everybody gets vaccinated" ... (we can't vax ourselves out of this pandemic - AND HE KNOWS IT!) BTW, he has refused to comment or stand with the working class against the illegal and unconstitutional vax mandates and passports ************** "Let us stand up and resist so future generations will at least say ‘they tried.’ We cannot do this alone ... together we have a chance" ... BTW, he has refused to comment on THE GREAT RESET, The World Economic Forum and the book THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION ************** In a 2020 interview, he said he told indigenous pipeline protesters to "park your cars in their path, remove the engines and walk away" ... BTW, he did not even mention the Canadian trucker convoy until a March 2022 interview with Jimmy Dore - one month after the protests actually ended ... ************** In his AMERICAN SADISM speech, he revealed his disdain for those of us who now openly question the motives and tactics of our elected officials ... He said the loss of the elite's credibility "has given rise to spontaneous groups, as well as the lunatic fringe that embraces conspiracy theories" ... ************** From his book WAGES OF REBELLION, he said: “I do not fight fascists because I will win. I fight fascists because they are fascists” ... BTW, he will now only consent to occasional "hands-off" interviews with persons who will NOT challenge him: Amy Goodman, Katie Halper, Briahna Joy-Gray, Krystal Ball, Kyle Kulinski ... ************** After a 2014 speech, he was asked to comment on 9/11 and insulted our collective intelligence by saying "Bush was probably just asleep at the wheel" ... ************** But he knows he can maintain his place in the independent media food chain by: 1) ripping on AOC 2) talking about Assange 3) talking about Snowden 4) talking about Donzinger 5) talking about Ukraine I miss the pre-pandemic Chris Hedges ... many times these past 10 years I went to bed with his words ringing in my ears ... he's said many awesome and memorable things that helped me understand and accept our current predicament ... and although his work with prison inmates is laudable, it is not nearly significant enough to offset the effects of his selective silence on these devastating working class issues ... he's no longer a truly fearless activist, just another cherry-picking elitist!

The idea that the CIA "got it wrong" or "dropped the ball" is B.S. comes from the idea that the CIA's intentions are altruistic, good guys that made a few mistakes. Wrong! Their goal is almost always the exact opposite of what they claim. The best line is, "they are gangster for Wall Street." Just like our democracy is a front for the Oligarchs. The CIA's stated goals is a front for the public, Politicians, and newbe recruiting purposes. In the back channels they are buying and selling drugs and military Arms to support clandestine operations. They are doing what ever it takes to secure economic advantage for the corporate elite of the world. They remove and replace leaders that dont comply, care nothing about the people of those countries. Conflict is more weapons sales They are doing the exact opposite of what the postcard of what American represents. Of course they killed JFK! The CIA in conjunction with other world intelligence agencies like MI6 and Mossad are operators for the Elite and the People are just one of life's obstacles.

Be careful. You might get people openly debating whether Call of Duty is "social engineering" caged as entertainment. Or it could just be that too many people (armchair warriors, SJWs, etc) watching mainstream media are losing sight of where reality ends and the game script begins. Potayto potahto? Tomayto tomato? Maybe toss in some Onion for good measure and call the ensuing shit show "dinner theater"? I don't know about you but anymore I have to wonder how much of anything is skew(er)ed. I worked for CIA for over thirty years. Never saw ANY criminal act, not one, not even an officer lying about his expenses on a tdy. CIA culture does not tolerate any crime by employees, ZERO. I worked in CIA's Counter Terrorism Center starting very late 2001, after 9/11. We chased terrorists all over the world, worked with probably hundreds of various foreign liaison elements from organizations like CIA to police to military in literally every country on Earth. EVERY step we took, everything, was clearly with the Inspector General office of CIA, the lawyers. Nobody farted without getting their sign off. After 9/11, the CIA had Lethal Findings from the President so there was legal authorization to kill people but it had to be approved AT LEAST at the DCI/CIA level, the boss, or by the President. What you think you know is baloney.

This was an interesting session that definitely highlighted some salient points about the CIA. I enjoy Chris Hedges and have almost read all of his books. However I think it would be unwise to take everything at face value about the CIA kind of stumbling into mismanagement, assassinations, and lack of oversight since 9/11. The predecessor to the CIA, the OSS founded in 1942, under Roosevelt was the same criminal, entity. It allowed drugs to be sold into poor African American neighborhoods to fund the secret war against communism in Europe. There is no evidence to suggest this has ended. This is about institutionalizing plunder, murder, exploitation, and sin in secrecy, and will not end just because you close the door of the CIA. I hope that Chris could one day interview someone like Doug Valentine, I think personally his CIA knowledge is more holistic and comprehensive.

EXACTLY this Rashad. Reminded of Michael Parenti, an excerpt from his piece Mystery: How Wealth Creates Poverty which I think can be easily extrapolated in its direct and plain language to illuminate your more than apt contention (highly recommend anyone interested in this angle to check out the full piece which fleshes all this out far more, merely trying to condense the point I think Rashad is getting at): _In their perpetual confusion, some liberal critics conclude that foreign aid and IMF and World Bank structural adjustments “do not work”; the end result is less self-sufficiency and more poverty for the recipient nations, they point out. Why then do the rich member states continue to fund the IMF and World Bank? Are their leaders just less intelligent than the critics who keep pointing out to them that their policies are having the opposite effect?_ _No, it is the critics who are stupid not the western leaders and investors who own so much of the world and enjoy such immense wealth and success. They pursue their aid and foreign loan programs because such programs do work. The question is, work for whom? Cui bono?_ _The purpose behind their investments, loans, and aid programs is not to uplift the masses in other countries. That is certainly not the business they are in. The purpose is to serve the interests of global capital accumulation, to take over the lands and local economies of Third World peoples, monopolize their markets, depress their wages, indenture their labor with enormous debts, privatize their public service sector, and prevent these nations from emerging as trade competitors by not allowing them a normal development._ _In these respects, investments, foreign loans, and structural adjustments work very well indeed._ _The real mystery is: why do some people find such an analysis to be so improbable, a “conspiratorial” imagining? Why are they skeptical that U.S. rulers knowingly and deliberately pursue such ruthless policies (suppress wages, rollback environmental protections, eliminate the public sector, cut human services) in the Third World? These rulers are pursuing much the same policies right here in our own country!_ _Isn’t it time that liberal critics stop thinking that the people who own so much of the world---and want to own it all---are “incompetent” or “misguided” or “failing to see the unintended consequences of their policies”? You are not being very smart when you think your enemies are not as smart as you. They know where their interests lie, and so should we._ Conversely, William Casey, -demonic arcon- CIA Director under Reagan, also comes to mind, in his hubris unambiguously describing the intended efficacy of Operation Mockingbird, _"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false."_ Surely he's giving two big thumbs up in hell, which at this point is probably hard to distinguish from the world he helped create for us...ubiquitously inundated via a technologically mediated digital spectacle that effectively keeps us systemically paralyzed in an individually insulated social miasma of reaction, tragedy, and farce... But uh...pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will...or something lol... Actually, if anyone's interested, I'm recalling Parenti's lecture on Conspiracy and Class Power gets at the CIA angle far more directly and I think is also a great breakdown of the social gaslighting and correspondingly cultivated ideological lacunas/compartmentalization that constantly erode our confidence/imagination to act/organize effectively toward any sort of collective escape velocity by reinforcing a broader historical understanding and continuity which necessarily breaks down and overrides any artificially imposed mental barriers through a concrete existential "dasein" communion with the larger scope of history and by extension each other, ie anchoring of our unique experience situated within this particular time/space to a broader class consciousness - in the same sort of guiding world spirit principle of universal justice Chris so eloquently speaks to, but rooted from a more marxist perspective of dialectical/historical materialism, if that made any sense lol...: youtu (dot) be/t21UZxRYYA4 _"The ultimate hidden truth of the world is that it is something we make and could just as easily make differently."_ - the late great David Graeber *Socialism or [continued] barbarism.*

I would go farther back to the MKUltra and the beginning of drug and human trafficking for profit by the Alphabet Agencies. Besides Doug Valentine, Peter Dale Scott has written extensively on this subject. At about the same time, the IMF/WTO/World Bank were just getting ready to asset strip countries through debt. It's a continuum of criminality that people refuse to see.

This is a good read. A Timeline of CIA Atrocities "CIA operations follow the same recurring script. First, American business interests abroad are threatened by a popular or democratically elected leader. The people support their leader because he intends to conduct land reform, strengthen unions, redistribute wealth, nationalize foreign-owned industry, and regulate business to protect workers, consumers and the environment. So, on behalf of American business, and often with their help, the CIA mobilizes the opposition. First it identifies right-wing groups within the country (usually the military), and offers them a deal: 'We'll put you in power if you maintain a favorable business climate for us.' The Agency then hires, trains and works with them to overthrow the existing government (usually a democracy). It uses every trick in the book: propaganda, stuffed ballot boxes, purchased elections, extortion, blackmail, sexual intrigue, false stories about opponents in the local media, infiltration and disruption of opposing political parties, kidnapping, beating, torture, intimidation, economic sabotage, death squads and even assassination. These efforts culminate in a military coup, which installs a right-wing dictator. The CIA trains the dictator’s security apparatus to crack down on the traditional enemies of big business, using interrogation, torture and murder. The victims are said to be 'communists,' but almost always they are just peasants, liberals, moderates, labor union leaders, political opponents and advocates of free speech and democracy. Widespread human rights abuses follow. "This scenario has been repeated so many times that the CIA actually teaches it in a special school, the notorious 'School of the Americas.' (It opened in Panama but later moved to Fort Benning, Georgia.) Critics have nicknamed it the 'School of the Dictators' and 'School of the Assassins.' Here, the CIA trains Latin American military officers how to conduct coups, including the use of interrogation, torture and murder." Search any of the text to find the full article that outlines a myriad of atrocities. KZbin doesn't allow external links and will delete this comment if I try to share it, but the url contains huppi and kangaroo, so you know you've found the referenced document.

This is one of the most fascinating interviews I've ever seen Chris Hedges do. I guess I'm particularly fascinated because I've been a fan of "spy" shows & movies since the mid-1960s, and in the late 80s-early 90s wrote a series of "crime comedies" that at times involved members of the CIA and FBI. Even back then, in my stories, the FBI tended to look down on the CIA as being "less moral". These days, both organizations have proven to be so. Also, funny enough, John Kiriakou actually reminds me of a friend I used to work with in the 1980s, who was very friendly and good-natured, and used to joke in ways that suggested he had some kind of "secret" connections he wasn't allowed to talk about. Watching this interview is almost like having a reunion with my old friend, who I lost touch with back in the 90s.

I'd pretty much agree with you, but the problem seems to be that with something as radical as the killing of a president, if they did play a role, anyone who knew about that role and any documents that existed would most likely have been expunged until there were no documents and few enough people who knew to the point where it would basically be the individual equivalent of a self-imposed lobotomy to cover it up. There are enough questions and inconsistencies around that incident by people who they couldn't or didn't realize needed to be neutralized that makes it hard to believe they played no role... If someone asked me to commit such an act, it would be tasked to outsiders out of public view (like the mafia, as they mention) who would be in position to be silenced soon after the deed was done and the particulars would only be known by those who would be entrapped to the highest degree and prevented from revealing anything (I'd guess maybe a half-dozen or so people), even on their deathbed for fear of reprisal against relatives... I haven't heard John or Chris lay out in detail how much research they have actually done on the incident and how they drew their conclusion so I could be speaking out of my ass but, an analyst (like John) is probably not privy to the highest levels of clearance, but we know that Ed Snowden basically had carte blanche to sift through their files (or at least their operation names and file creation dates) being in charge of "Information sharing" between the agencies, which gave me some pause, but by the time he was employed, the documented information may have already been destroyed, so even that doesn't rule out that they may have had a role... It's such a damn tangle of human history that we will probably never know, but in their defense, I've played the video game that was created to simulate the assassination and it SEEMS doable if INSANELY difficult on the first try...so in the end I can't draw any hard conclusions, but as what you would call an information or education junkie I'm always on the lookout and the more time that passes and more information that comes out, I become more and more doubtful that the CIA were blameless when it comes to that particular incident...just my two cents...sorry I can't give you anything more substantial, but if I know one thing about information, it's that one must be EXTREMELY careful not to let personal bias intrude on the weighing of information and it's value...(Though as a human, it's near if not impossible to do so given the time from the event and that I've only been around for 37 years)...

Especially since after the CIA's secret mission in Cuba to overthrow Castro without telling JFK, he said he'd break the "CIA into 1000 pieces." If that's not a reason for Dulles the traitor to assassinate him, then what is?

I've always stated that when the CIA used lunatics like Elie Homolka (yes, he of the Sabra and Shatila infamy) to try and assassinate Fadlallah in Beirut in 1985, and instead blew up and killed 80 schoolgirls leaving a Mosque trying to do so (they completely missed Fadlallah, who most people now agree was not responsible for the barracks bombing of the Marines in 1983, which is why he was targeted), that that should have been the last straw for the long and infamous nefarious acts of the CIA/OSS, and they should have been shut down. Instead, when I say that, most people look at me with a puzzled look because they have no idea what I'm talking about which says a lot about what the public is told and not told in regard to what these maniacs are doing all over the world.

I didn't know the details you gave, but from massive evidence (still available for those who will search for it) I entirely agree with you. I am utterly disgusted that they have gotten away with it for so long, but realize it is because they have huge control over the legacy corporate news media and Hollywood. CNN, MSNBC et al are faithful and true mouthpieces for his evil organization. They probably staged the Watergate scandal to swamp the story of the just prior to that disclosure of the Pentagon Papers, which exposed the deception that the US Intelligence Agencies and deep State Dept had foisted upon the people of America concerning the Vietnam war. They succeeded so well that most people have heard of Watergate, but they haven't heard of the Pentagon Papers ... and the Pentagon Papers are actually far far more significant and important than Watergate ever was.
