"A long, long time ago, I can still remember, how that music used to make me smile. "
BONUS - After the video, be sure to stay tuned for a rare clip from 1960.
In early 1960 at the Atlanta airport, a young man in uniform approached the teenage singer. "Brenda, I have a song for you", he announced. He was nearly unrecognizable in his military garb and haircut, but his voice gave him away. "Jerry! Sure, send us your song." responded the teen as she jotted down an address and rushed off to catch her flight. "Jerry" was Jerry Reed who Brenda Lee knew as a talented musician in country bands and he had written "Crazy Legs" for Gene Vincent. "Sweet Nothin's" was slowly climbing the charts and producer Owen Bradley was reviewing songs and trying to find a Rock & Roll song for her next session. Perhaps Jerry Reed had written the followup tune they were looking for? You know the rest. Released on 30 May 1960, "I'm Sorry" / "That's All You Gotta Do" was a two-sided monster hit.
The single ranks as the fourth most popular release in the 1950-60s era according to Billboard magazine:
(1) "Hound Dog"/ "Don't Be Cruel" (Elvis Presley, 1956): both sides reached No.1
(2) "I Feel Fine" / "She's A Woman" (The Beatles, 1964): No. 1/ No. 4
(3) "We Can Work It Out" / "Day Tripper" (The Beatles, 1966): No. 1 / No. 5
(4) "I'm Sorry" / "That's All You Gotta Do" (Brenda Lee, 1960): No. 1 / No. 6
Songwriter: Jerry Reed Hubbard (1937-2008)
Anytime you're feeling low
And you got no place to go
You don't have to be blue
Here is all you gotta do
Call me on the telephone
Tell me that you're all alone
And I'll come a runnin' to you
Baby, that's all you gotta do
All you gotta do when you're lonesome
Is to call on me
And I'll come a runnin' to you
As a fast as I can
I'll love and squeeze you
Uh-huh-huh
I'll try to please you
'Cause baby, I want you to be my lovin' man
I've been waiting for the chance
Me and you to start a romance
And if you feel the same way too
Here's all you gotta do
Tell me just a how you feel
Tell me that your love is real
And I'll give my heart to you
Baby, that's all you gotta do
All you gotta do when you're lonesome
Is to call on me
And I'll come a runnin' to you
As a fast as I can
Uh-huh-huh
I'll love and squeeze you
Uh-huh-huh
I'll try to please you
'Cause baby, I want you to be my lovin' man
I've been waitin' for the chance
Me and you to start a romance
And if you feel the same way too
Here's all you gotta do
Tell me just a how you feel
Tell me that your love is real
And I'll give my heart to you
Baby, that's all you gotta do

Unbeknownst to her, Clarence Clemons was a big Brenda fan. He heard from band members that she was coming to New York to tape a special and he asked if he could sit in with them. Although Brenda did only two solos for the show, she generously shared the spotlight with him for this number. Clemons thus fulfilled a boyhood dream of being "Boots Randolph" to Brenda Lee. Makes me wish they had done a record or two together.

Its literally impossible to not smile when listening to or especially when watching Little Miss Dynamite sing, either then or now. I love this lady, her voice, and her contributions to music! What a dame! They honestly don't make them like her anymore, sadly.

Brenda is simply the best...singing or being so kind to her fans....somehow she was overlooked and not recognized as the amazing talent who is still performing today at the age of 69. Who else is still here who went professional in 1953? She is the only woman in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and The County Music Hall of Fame. Don Hicks

On this day in 1960 {June 6th} "That's All You Gotta Do" by Brenda Lee entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #6 and spent 14 weeks on the Top 100... The flip side of the record, "I'm Sorry", fared just a little bit better; it reached #1 {for 3 weeks} and stayed on the Top 100 for almost a half-year {23 weeks}... On Billboard's R&B Singles chart "I'm Sorry" peaked at #4, while "That's All You Gotta Do" reached #19... R.I.P. Mr. Clemons {1942 - 2011}...

Yes, I think "unique" is the right word. There are some emotional singers who went before her that have some similarities, but not entirely the same. Kelly Clarkson, the first American Idol, has a deep contralto voice like BL, but lacks the creative interpretive skill that Brenda has.

That early version is a lip sync to the recording. From a Dick Clark show that was on location in Chicago. I wonder if the teen girls in the audience that the cameraman happened to focus on ever saw the video.

Decca intended it as the A-side! They sent the preview copies to the DJs as the Rock n' roll followup to "Sweet Nothin's". When some DJs flipped it over and played "I'm Sorry" on the air, the switchboards lit up and it was on it's way to #1. Still, after Brenda's lip sync appearance on national TV in the second video, TAYGD shot up to #6. With the #1 and #6 on the chart, 15 year old Brenda Lee was suddenly in Elvis territory.

As I recall, Brenda was surprised to learn that Clarence was a big fan. "The Boss", by the way, is a Wanda Jackson fan, For some reason, Brenda was big in the black community with many of her records on the R&B chart, And even today, Kanye West sampled "Sweet Nothins'.

MrCallipygous I'm a long-time Bruce fan along with Clarence and the band, going back to Welcome to Asbury Park, and I've seen them many times. This has always been my favorite song by Brenda Lee going back to when I was 14 and had my first gf. Had no idea she had a following in the black community. Great story, for sure!!!! And lots of personal history for me connected to all this.

A catchy hit from the summer of 1960 (her "I'm Sorry" seemed to peak in this market later, closer to when school started in Sept). Anyway, one morning that summer in the wee hours a bad thunderstorm awoke us all, and I turned on a local AM Top 40 station (KONO 860) to see if anything more severe might be around - only to be greeted by this tune interspersed with all the heavy static crashes from the lightning!

Hooray for a 100k! Views, that is. This one is Brenda at full throttle. She was not known for going all out at rehearsals, thereby saving something for the actual performance. I sense that the band was a little surprised at the vocal. You can see the tympani player settling in at 1:18 and looking very ho-hum. When Brenda lets go with a scream you can catch a glimpse of him looking her way and smiling at 1:45 . Kinda like "What just happened here?". Dude, rock happened!

Adavels Thomas I often use the word "unique" when someone asks about the channel and why I am doing it. Really can't come up with a singer with a similar style who sang at this level for so long. This video is 28 years after the recording and the song is better than ever. Good luck to you in your shows!

Joplin was influenced by the old time blues singers. Ma Rainey and especially Bessie Smith . I think Brenda inspired many young women to perform at a time when there were hardly any women in Rock in 1960 when this song came out.

Vivino is a little out of tune - and he misses the signature figure coming out of the bridge. Clemmons? Stock licks all the way. But Brenda still brings it - big time! And do you know who wrote this song? JERRY REED! This was a B side to "I'm Sorry." I bought this record when it came out - and for the b side - not for "I'm Sorry" which became the runaway hit. The song kept food in Jerry's belly - till he became a star himself.
