Hi Brendon - been listening to Deep Purple from the mid / late 60's. Just streamed the album and had my first listen - well, one things for sure, its Deep Purple alright !! The riffs, the guitar keyboard interplay, Ian Gillans vocals it sounds great. Simon McBride sounds like a hell of a guitar player, and Deep purple have always had those - Simon will do just fine. On one listen, the whole album sounds like Deep Purple - its great. Still Rockin after all these years - amazing. Cya

This is exactly what I hoped would happen. Simon McBride injects some fire and energy into the band and they made a killer rock album. My prayers have been answered. This is surely proof if needed that Deep Purple are the greatest rock band of all time.

Two listens in for this one so far. Initial impressions are excellent. I hear Don Airey's stand out performance the most. Simon delivers what's expected for a DP guitarist. Definitely a return to more of a straight rock record, less proggy. I liked Whoosh a lot, but this one will compete with or surpass it. Continuing to listen to figure that out. Great review & video.

Great review. 😀 Purple’s = 1 cover is reflecting perfectly the meaning of the album tile and “message” White .. all colours together = 1 Good conceptual art isn’t obvious. Ian Gillan is behind all this stuff. He’s obsessed with cosmology infinity the mystery of how the Universe grew us .. everything from big bang 💥 plasma /energy the four forces, geometry, information and some clumping and cooling and waiting around for 14 billion years. 🥚 to 🐓 🌱 to 🌳 Big Bang💥 to me 🕺 The Universe is likely conscious and organismic . It just doesn’t look like an organism from our perspective of its infinity ♾️ . Most scientists now think it’s cyclic .. it lives and dies and lives again. They can’t put it like that because they would be chucked out of the cult of materialism which is the central dogma of science .. great as science is obviously. The Universe - “All that is was and will be” = 1 The fragmentation/degradation of the ecosystem……🌍 …..and our interpersonal relationships and ultimately War, doesn’t reflect the actuality of that 1-ness .. which we ultimately are .. and have forgotten/ignore or are in denial of. Nature .. simple 💥 💨 🌟 and infinitely ♾️ complex 💃 🧠 and 1

There has been suggestions that this album harks back to the band's prime time early 70's period. The song titles even suggest this e.g. Portable Door = Knocking At Your Back Door (okay that is '84), Lazy Sod = Lazy, Pictures Of You = Pictures of Home and Money To Burn = Burn. Okay this is a bit of a stretch but some of the riffs sound familiar. The band have produced an album that is sharp, to the point, energised with less 'progressive tendencies of say Purpendicular (their musical masterpiece in my opinion) and Now What?! although the final track Bleeding Obvious is multifaceted. Simon McBride is a more 'straight ahead' player than Morse and is reflected in the more concise song structure. Reinvigorated and re-energised this is a powerful album that is however sympathetic to Gillan's more restrained vocal delivery. For me Ian Paice is the star turn with his best drumming performance in a long time. Just listen to A Bit On The Side and Now You're Talkin' (my personal favourite). For those stating 'no Blackmore no Deep Purple' are missing, in my estimation, the band's most creative period under Morse in terms of song structure arrangements. Let's be honest the musicianship within this band has always been of the highest order.

I think the music is great, unfortunately the album is compressed as all get out with DR of 4. Oof. No idea why bands like this agree to have the dynamics squashed. Even the vinyl is mastered loud, so getting the LP doesn't help (much) in that regard. Still, its a solid album, getting new music from bands like DP is always a bonus.

I love the music and songs on the album, but for me, Gillans voice is a real problem. The riffs and interplay between Airey and Mcbride are superb, and their solos are fantastic on every track. McBrides tone and style suits them perfectly. Paice is back at the top of his game, he sounds completely revitalised. Glover, also. But Gillian’s voice is so strained, nasal and thin, that I find it hard to listen too. Ezrin has mixed Gillans vocals so dry and upfront that it doesn’t do Gillan any favours. I love Gillan, but he just sounds painfully bad at this point.

I listened to this one the whole way through last night. I only heard the first single on the day it was released prior to this. I didn't want to spoil the surprise and I felt like the first single was a clear mission of intent. My initial take on this album is that the music is not a run of the mill retread of past glories. Although it is very much a Deep Purple sounding album. Simon McBride seems to have an ability to chanel a little of that Blackmore flavor without sounding like a clone. There are also some Zeppelinesque moments that I found very enjoyable (Ian even manages to sound a little like Robert Plant on one section). Very tasty playing on the band's part. Everyone sounds fantastic in their lanes and the production is sparkling as well. My only real gripe with this album is Ian Gillan's quirkiness which has always made or broke my affinity for a new release of his. Sometimes he's amazing and other times I'm left scratching my head. This time around, he seems to be slightly off lyrically. Not all of it's bad. The single Portable Door has a decent story throughout and Bleeding Obvious is good. Most of the rest of it is Ian singing about various women in his creepy sexually tinged way that's a little off putting at times. I guess it's not much different from his past works but, the older he gets, the creepier it sounds. He's singing to prostitutes and goldigging younger women at various times and possibly to a wife on the verge of divorcing him or taking him out? I don't know what I would have wanted or expected a man of Gillan's experience to be singing about so, I'm not going to pass judgment on that. I'm just having a little trouble relating to it myself. Overall I'm going to give it a 7/10. I took a point or two off for the lyrical scrabble that Ian lays out for us this time around.

If I was them or the stones or ac/dc etc I’d feel responsible to write music about the bitter sweetness of mortality and how they philosophize their way to being happy and having things to seek and hope for and ways to grow during those stages of life that are no longer about picking up chicks at the bar. So it’s the lyrics for me, that kind of make this album a missed opportunity, in some ways, and the album cover art as well is such an odd thing to deliberately choose to make boring

In Rock was the 4th studio Album, Concerto for Group and Orchestra was a live album. It was their 5th album though. I would not classify DP mk1 as a psychadelic rock band. The new guitarist is good and plays with a more recognizable style and a style that fits better with Purple.
@teec35572 ай бұрын
I just have to say that Bob Ezrin imo has ruined the sound of Deep Purple along with Don Airey choosing to go “light” or somewhat absent on the growling rhythm of the Hammond organ. ‘What If’ was a well produced album but Paice’s drums are buried in the mix on some songs. On Whoosh the music seems compressed particularly Morse’s guitar which also is buried in the mix. A real shame. Do you know what is the best sounding Ezrin album - Turning to Crime. Probably because they weren’t together in the studio and Ezrin didn’t have time to screw with the sound. The organ on some of the songs literally growls in places plus all the instruments are in your face like the early DP albums. At least Michael Bradford for all his faults had each instrument clearly up front and distinct except on Rapture of the Deep where it sounds like on some songs Paice only has a snare drum. Listen to Wrong Man - there is nothing like like this on the new album because that heavy organ rhythm is just not there. Also, Gillan’s vocals are too up front in the mix particularly in Whoosh and similarly in = 1. Plus the last two albums has reduced Purple to a 3-4 minute song band. That is not Deep Purple. Too many songs too short too much vocal - how people can compare this album of 13 3-4 minute songs to In Rock with 7 songs is baffling. The same hold true for WHOOSH which imo has better sings than this album
