"Fireball" was my 1st DP purchase, and was even more thrilled as a (then) teenager to find an import copy that contained "Demon's Eye"!! "Fireball" and "Fools" are magnificent!!

As a teenage thirsting to, er, "get to know and possibly 'discover' women", and loving well-chosen lyrics, plus the tongue-in-cheek country style, "Anyone's daughter" is a firm favourite of mine from this album. But, then again, I love every track on "Fireball"!

My personal favorite is Fools on this lp. Hypnotic trans like very cool of Blackmore emulating a violin with his guitar. If you listen closely you can hear the guitar strings vibrating. Its a masterpiece of Blackmore using his volume knobs. I always thought it was Lord. Put headphones on listen. Am I wrong? Just Is curious to see if i'm right. It could be a combination of both. Love to hear if back if you agree or disagree.

I'm remembering Ian Gillan said Anyone's Daughter is his favorite Deep Purple song ever. When i read this i was surprised. When Fireball came out i was 11 years old and i bought it on mc immediatly. Then came Anyone's Daughter and i thought what the hell is that. Country or foolish. That was not my hard rocking Deep Purple which i loved so. Now i have found my freedom with the song and i actually think it's good. For me Deep Purple In Rock, Fireball and Machine Head is my holy trilogy with Made In Japan on top as a bonus gift. At that time i had a school friend and he said Who Do We Think We Are is the best DP album ever and i answered are you kidding me, no no no. WDWTWA is really underrated but of course not the best. Between Machine Head and Burn. Two titanic outputs. In my holy trilogy is Fireball middle of the road and that's quite right. As a german guy i must say all tons of awesome UK bands have influenced my whole life and when i'm thinking of the United Kingdom is my first thought wow ,what a great music culture. This phenomenon will always remain unique.

I LOVE Fireball. Always have. Though In Rock and Burn figure very very highly among my favourite Purple albums, I have always had a very soft spot for Fireball. It is my favourite studio album from the group - it and Made In Japan are my two ultimate Purple records. Side 2 with Fools, The Mule and No One Came is exquisite.

The song Fireball was experimental at the time. A lot of thrash metal bands say that song was first ever thrash metal song. Love Roger Glover bass solo. Great lp Gillan's favorite. Experimental at that time all the songs different and unique.

Fools and Fireball are still my favorites from this LP. Around 1971, I first heard Fireball first on radio, and the LP on an 8-track car cassette player.

Good review. In 1971 I was 13 years old. I was already a Rock nut. I wasn't buying a lot of albums in those days. I was a member of Boys Clubs of America. We had a library at the club full of records, books etc. One day some older kid put this album (Fireball) on the turntable. The song that really grabbed me was.....No No No. I never bought the album but that track stayed with me for many years.

I've been listening this album for almost 40 years but after your story i gave it another go and heard it differently bearing in mind your personal experience and nuances you ve emphasized !!! great story! great presentation! you can listen to DP in different periods of your life and still get smth new!! I was brought to DP by my older brother starting with In Rock and Made in Japan. Couldn't afford buying lps back then but taped Fireball and Machine Head. It seems out of place but it really isn't, though I get the argument for the inclusion of "Strange Kind Of Woman" or even "I'm Alone" instead. I know I should play the album more often. Cheers mate. Another brilliant episode that stirred up some great memories. Thank you! Funny that you tell about how you had to really prioritise which records you bought. Same for me and most of my friends. Nothing of that can be understood today. 😊 Anyway, I heard Fireball in the students relax room at school where someone had brought a tape and put it on the resident tape machine. The vocal delivery on especially Fools moved me deeply. What a convincing delivery.

Superb video. I listen to the more recent recordings, which are still excellent, but Fireball is the 70's DP recording I tend to back to most frequently. It's Fools and No One Came for me. Saw them do both songs in the set in 2002. Amazing!

Hi Phil, Another great video, on your personal journey with Fireball over the last 50 years. Fireball came in for some bad press when it first came out and over the following years. Even within the Band, Gillian liked it, but Blackmore did not rate it, he thought it was a step backwards. I bought back in 72, and I love the album. In my view it is different from other Purple albums, but that's bye no way a bad thing. I love every song on it, even Anyone's Daughter. I feel it sits well in between In Rock and Machine Head, and that trilogy would not be the same without one of the other two albums. But then again I love ' Who Do We Think We Are' and that's another Purple album that doesn't rate we with a lot of people.

Only got to see Deep Purple with Ritchie Blackmore when they were toring and promoting " House Of Blue Light " , and the only connection to Fireball was including " Strange ind Of Woman " which was OK bt not one of my preferred songs . But afterwards I saw them tour over the years with Steve Morse 18 times , anyd this lineup did include more of the Fireball tunes . I especially recall the extended live version of " No One Came " featuring a strobe light . Awesome experience ! And in my opinion, I've never been a big fan of too many of their album covers , but for me " Fireball " was their best .

great album, listened to it in between power cuts in 1971! the sound effect at the beginning of the title track was an air compressor starting up, i know as it sounded exactly like the one in my garage i worked in at the time.

Hi Phil, great memories you have (and I of those years). In 1970, at 15, I will visiting a friend's house and he had three albums he said I must listen to: Uriah Heep's 1st album, Black Sabbath's 1st and DP In Rock. Ritchie has been my favorite ever since. He also thought Fireball was a dip down though it is Gillan's favorite. But as the years (and decades) go by, all of those albums sound better and better compared to what the music industry has turned into. You dedication is highly noted and appreciated.

Fireball has always been my favourite Deep Purple album, probably because it's so eclectic and experimental. And yes ... progressive. It also contains what I think is Purple's all-time finest song, No No No. It's a PERFECT song. Starts off so laid back and relaxed, but by the end it's like a runaway freight train. It just keeps building and building, and the solos are perfectly matched to the mood of the song, tasteful and slow but full of passion and creativity. In the early 70s Purple didn't feel like they had to "shred" all the time ... their solos were designed to suit the music and project the "feel" of the songs. Restraint was just as important to Deep Purple as explosiveness, and No No No is the perfect example of a blend of masterful restraint with deep emotion and groove. But when the song does finally explode, it is utterly devastating and leaves nothing but ashes in its wake. Plus it has that iconic sudden-stop ending which reverberates through you like a door slamming shut. No fade-outs for this song! It is a finite, colourful, self-contained, moody and immersive masterpiece. An expertly cut, multi-faceted JEWEL!!! I love the hell out of it!

Hi Phil, great review. We are clearly about the same age and I absolutely thought, like yourself, that Fireball was a bit of a dip. I felt like I'd blown my pocket money on a dud, but I persevered because something in there kept drawing me back in. Eventually I began to understand it had an atmosphere and a feel that was quite unlike their other material, in fact I also consider it the closest to prog that Purple got. It really is quite excellent and stands the test of time very well. I still have my original vinyl copy as well as the 25th anniversary expanded CD. Blackmore demonstrates his virtuosity throughout but especially his Akkerman-esque violin swells on Fools which are quite beautiful. Great stuff.

Hi Phil. You put this so well that I haven't much to add. No No No and Fools are two of my fave DP songs too, and The Mule had that incredibly spooky guitar solo. UFO's Mother Mary reminds me of Fools, so it's possible Michael Schenker was a fan of Fireball. Slow Train really would've fit well on the album. Who Do We Think We Are? has a slightly similar feel to Fireball, being almost prog in places. Cheers!

Loved watching your show on Fireball Phil. When you mentioned the lyric sheet I had to go and check, yes I still have it with my copy. I’ve underlined 3 songs, Fireball , No No No and The Mule. That’s because after getting home from my first ever concert (Nazareth opened for Deep Purple) at Coventry Theatre, I wanted to remember the tracks I’d heard live. I’d purchased a ticket on the front row, so when Ian Gillian come down and shook hands with everyone I was amazed. I didn’t know it was his last tour with the band as he was leaving. The next time I saw Purple, Elf opened the show and Glenn Hughes David Coverdale had joined.

Gemini the twins, split personality hence “I Don’t know which one I like the most”. Always loved the title track and the album took some getting into. Some non prog albums do have a prog feel all the same so I know what you mean. For me “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” and “Houses Of The Holy” are similarly the closest those bands got to prog (though I’d also make a case for “Sabotage” too). Now you could also make a case that it should’ve been a double.

Fireball. I really liked the variety. I think Ritchie shines when he sits in his own pocket but on Fireball he shows he can play well on anything really. There are no favourites on this album. It's a solid album throughout. Bought it after hearing Fireball on 24 Carat Purple.

I am in the US but have a Japanese pressing-but the damn Japanese pressing also has Strange Kind Of Woman in place of Demon's Eye. I wish it had the proper UK tracklist. I like Strange Kind Of Woman, but want to consume it as a single. Still, I enjoyed playing my Japanese copy the other day. I remember hearing the title track as a kid on my dad's Deepest Purple CD and being absolutely fascinated by the intro. That air conditioner noise (or whatever it is) and then Paice's wild drumming bursting in. I remember playing it over and over again on a boombox in our garage one day.

Fireball is a great album but I reckon that for most people who started listening to Deep Purple towards the end of the 1970's (like me), it is just an album that gets lost behind In Rock, Machine Head and Made in Japan - everyone went for the other three albums first, I think Who Do We Think We Are is in the same category as Fireball.

Another great video Phil! A big part of the genius of Blackmore was what he chose to play, as well as when he chose not to play! A truly confident player (Trower and Beck also come to mind) feels when to lay back and give space to other instruments. It's hard to be sandwiched between In Rock and Machine Head, but Fireball holds its own. It is a "must own" album - as are all 4 of the 70's studio albums with the MKII lineup. My first Purple track ever was "Highway Star" (from "Made in Japan", & I heard it on Radio One (247😂Mhz), on either the Noel Edmonds or even the Tony Blackburn show! It was, as the Americans say, a "game changer"! It opened me up to heavy rock music.

My friend got Fireball on 8-track before I bought the Vinyl. That was soon before Burn. In a later year I heard Demon's Eye and read that it was on the British release but not the American one. But it sounds like, frm you, that it was on the '45 not the album. I like that song a lot and wished it had been on the American release. No One Came has always been one of my favorite songs by them. I never liked Strange Kind Of Woman studio. I wasn't big on Anyone's Daughter either. But everything else I liked.

I used to keep my school dinners money and live on polo mints and other crap I hid in my blazer pocket so I could save up to buy albums. Otherwise it was one for my birthday in April and the next at Xmas! I’ve never warmed to Fireball ( see what I did there?) tbh, as it fell between three of the greatest albums ever released by anyone , never mind just DP. It’s definitely a “ grower” album though. In recent years I’ve enjoyed playing “ No One Came” while driving in the car on the motorway! Another very enjoyable video Phil. Cheers mate.

Singles were in australia currency $ 2: 99 and lps $ 6 : 99 and double 12 : 99 back in the 70s early 80s ....that simon Robertson book there is a 6 cd book called Listen, learn , read on which I've got , got it years ago. ...fools done live in Monterey jazz festival just brilliant...were deep purple wanting to change direction with burn , come taste the band.....era

I think “Fools” is quite close to western art music in terms of structure, and there are two classical pieces that I find similarities to the song. The first is Claude Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor... In the third movement of this work, the way that the strings accompanies during the viola tune in the middle part seems parallel between the way that Jon Lord plays the chords on the Hammond Organ -with the help of the volume pedal to give that rising effect- during Blackmore’s guitar solo which he uses the volume knob. Another similarity is between Blackmore’s aforementioned solo and the little horn melody in the fleeting “Sudden Appearance of Ivan Tsarevich” section of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet “The Firebird”, lasting about ninety seconds. You can hear the same notes, almost in the same manner... “Fools” is a song as if the chords were taken from Debussy, and the solo from Stravinsky and adapted to the psychedelic setting of 1971... And adding Ian Paice’s metronome-like drums that played in one take, the result is a minor masterpiece -in its own genre- that transcends its time in every respect. Cheers...

Phil have done a Who Do We Think We Are memories, the one thing about these older albums they definitely grow on you. Did you ever have the In Rock, Machine Head and Fireball picture discs with the posters. I don't think collector's collect many picture discs because of the playability. 👍🍻

Although it's not generally thought of as one of the groups best albums, I like Fireball. I remember, in particular, buying the single first. The thing I liked about Deep Purple was they could move - they were fast! Ok the lyrics were awful, like most heavy groups of the time, with a few exceptions. I quickly got tired of a lot of those groups - they didn't "speak" to me. I was too young. The members were too old - not of my generation. However, I still have a soft spot for Deep Purple, Free, Black Sabbath, Family, some Led Zeppelin ( although I loathe Stairway To Heaven ) and Jethro Tull, as Ian Anderson could write very well, something of an anomaly as I alluded to earlier. I think some people can be disappointed that Fireball is not a real follow up to In Rock. They are exploring other territories on this album and back in the days, that was what you were supposed to do. You got criticized if you were repeating yourself. They could have made a copy of the In Rock album using the outtakes but that would probably led to a lot of criticism, it was a lot of pressure from reviewers and audience to change and move on. I remember myself how disappointed I was with Queens album A Day At the Races, because it was a carbon copy of A Night at the Opera. That attitude changed in the late seventies to quite the opposite, I think. To not expect the same album over and over again, that made me able to appreciate the Deep Purple Mk1 albums for what they are, great proto prog albums.

In my humble opinion it would be a better album if "I'm Alone" or "Freedom" was included, instead of "Anyone's Daughter", it does not belong in the album. Anyway, "Fireball" is a great album, great album artwork.

My favourite band. Love this album except Anyone’s daughter. Dreadful song. Swap that for strange kind and you have a much better Lp. Fools is sublime. Love the Morse era live versions of that track. Demons Eye is one of my favourite DP songs. The US copy has a different lyric sheet and is worth owning for that reason! What came first though - DP Fireball or Warpig’s Rockstar!? Just like Burn, Fireball is tainted by a crap track - Anyone's Daughter. In Burn's case, it's A200.

Tastes different. I like - not love, like - A200. Blackmore is great. It reminds me a little of The Mule. Never skip it. I do skip Lay Down, Stay Down.

Anyone's Daughter isn't a crap song, it's just a different kind of Deep Purple song I applaud them for daring to be experimental enough to do it as a hard rock band. Were all Fireball releases gatefold, shamelessly haven't checked my LPs in ages but seem to remember it not being. And what's up with the band's name on the front cover why the full stop, back then record companies did odd things sometimes with the designs although I don't mind label logos being there it's kind of neat.
