I'm 23, and all I'm hearing is from a cute boy with autotunes and digitzed music in pop to screams in metal. I don't think there's been any attempt at being good in music since most recent bands I listen to were formed in the 90s, like Sabaton and Avenged Sevenfold, to name a few. If I had to listen to something new, it's gonna be Saint Asonia, a band formed in 2015 by people in bands formed in the 90s like Adam Gontier, formerly of Three Days Grace. That's for rock. For country, specifically Outlaw Country, I've found a lot of recent material thanks to Pandora.

I think there are two reasons why people ask that. Some do it because they're genuinely curious, and others do it to be critical.....My answer to those I feel are asking to be critical is now a very simple "because it makes me happy". -- I've found that to be a very effective and easy to shut down that line of questioning.

I too am 47 and have been collecting music since I was a kid and have never stopped. I still have more CDs than vinyl but vinyl is catching up. Regarding a question, how much if any of your 12K is dedicated to unofficial releases (aka bootlegs). When I was in college a guy would show up on campus every few weeks selling CDs and they were primarily silver disc boots of concert and other unreleased recordings. While many artists have since started releasing more stuff from the vaults, I still get excited to find something rare in the wild, often labeled as “import” or “radio broadcast.”

Fun fact: 12000 CDs in 34 years, when you do the math, it comes downs to exactly ONE CD A DAY!!! I love your idea of building a music library. Love watching your videos! Thanks !
@BrendonSnyder Жыл бұрын
I did the calculation a little differently. I use the average of 45 mins of music per album so 12,000 X 45 = 540,000 mins of music. Divided by 60 mins to get it into hours equals 9,000 hrs of music. Divided by 24 hours to get it into days equals 375 days of music. Now obviously I couldn’t listen to music straight for that length of time. So I considered listening for 8 hours a day how long would it take and it would only take 1,125 days to listen to all 12,000 CDs. 🤪

I have thousands of record albums, 7” & 12” singles - & also thousands of CDs. I love both formats! I never liked tapes… it was all vinyl until my mid 20s. I mainly bought CDs from 1987 on for a couple decades. Got back into vinyl big in the last 10 years or so. But I never lost my love of collecting & listening to my vinyl collection. I even enjoy cleaning records on my VPI 16 record cleaning machine. Today I still buy both and play both. Vinyl is higher maintenance and does take a bit higher end equipment to get the very best sound. The best pressings on a great system can sound better than many CDs. CDs portable, rip-able, and portable so I like that too. I’m a decade plus a little older than you and have been collecting since I was a kid! Hi Brendon, I just had the inspiration for another question for your Q&A next time while watching the latest Lets go to the record store #38 at Princeton Record Exchange. Ok question was: what method do you use to cleanly remove those awful price stickers from CD cases? A friend of mine once told me to use nail varnish remover but it just seems to ruin the case with a nasty smudge kinda stain. Plus I have bought digi packs in the past and the price labels actually have torn off the area of the cover where the label was. Which really bums me as it ruins the CD or indeed vinyl album cover. So I would love to know your ways around this. Ok, have a great day. Bye bye. Dave.

@@BrendonSnyder that sounds really cool, looking forward to that. Also I read an article in a computer magazine that Australia have recently announced they will stop selling DVD's due to a stronger demand to stream their movies. It kinda got me thinking I hope this doesn't happen globally, and I hope that trend doesn't extend into music CD'S. So far Australia I think don't have plans currently to stop selling CD's, but I can't help thinking if they do it to DVD's it will be inevitable to happen to CD's but I hope I am wrong. The vinyl comeback certainly slowed the sales of CD's, but I dont think thats the only thing to slow CD sales. I look at modern cars now, and they don't even have CD players anymore,. All the music can be loaded onto a USB. Personally I love bringing with me a selection of CD's with me for a car journey as I can easily look at the case for track listings etc rather than scrolling through hundreds of songs while driving isnt suitable from a safety point of view. Also downloading tracks on places like ITunes cuts out the need to buy CD'S, and of course streaming, not my cup of tea as I prefer the original physical CD. But sadly lots of things can slow the sales of CD'S, and I don't think its just vinyl or the comeback of Vinyl that is doing that. Hopefully as you mentioned the boom will burst, and vinyl will out price itself, and CD'S will come back in a big way. Fingers crossed.

They've done some top shelf Zep covers and that says a helluva lot about their talent level and feel for rock and roll! Not necessarily music-related, unless you have it. Keep the good content! 😎

Hi Brian, great question. Yes certainly I’ve done quite a few in my 21 years of practice. That said most of my clients are very well and we sign agreements not to showcase their projects. I’ll give it some thought and if there is some stuff I can show I will.

I’ve always been curious what got you interested in architecture as opposed to something music related? Also, if this one is too personal I understand, but a while back I remember you mentioning your mom moving in with you. Did that ever happen? Hi Brendon, Just like to say I would never put you down, I spend most of my nights catching up on watching your videos, and greatly enjoy every one. Sorry if I have been miss understood in the past. One of my questions is actually formed from one of the other questions, who would you leave your entire collection to by the time you pass away, God forbid we all hope you live a lot longer yet, but it got me thinking, would you not prefer to have a girlfriend or wife to share all this wonderful music with and maybe even have children so they too could either inherit the music, or value of it in terms of finance. I think there could be quite a value there in 30 years time, I personally would be worried who to leave it all to, especially such a personal collection as you have. But much more than that, without trying to get too personal, why have you seemed to have built a kind of man cave as we in the UK call it, like even married men have a man cave in their back yard to escape the family for a short time, but your whole property looks like a man cave, and I dont mean for that to sound nasty, its your choice, but have you given up on love completely for any reason? Its never too late to have children, I became a father again at 46, and I would never regret that, I am so proud of my daughter, shes 8 now and I am 54, but I sometimes wish I had the energy to give her compared to when I was 30. The clock never stops ticking is all I am trying to say. Hope all that hasn't offended you, my intention wasent to offend, merely provoke some answers. King regards. Dave.
@BrendonSnyder Жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, thanks for the heartfelt and well explained question. Yes we haven’t always seen eye to eye and sometimes your comments seem a bit harsh so thank you for elaborating on this one for clarity. Regarding the man cave comment, remember I own the house so the whole this is set up how I want it. I like more formal spaces and don’t want my whole house to love like my music room. So it’s not the hidden away part that a typical man cave is. It’s just how I like to live. Regarding the question about love, I’ve added it to the list and will respond during the Q&A.
@quolizzy1554 Жыл бұрын
Ok thank you so much Brendon, look forward to your official reply on the Q&A 👍

Bye bye. Dave.

I agree 100% on the sound quality of CDs over vinyl. I believe it’s just the music industry finding a new way to market music and brainwash consumers. Maybe the sound is different, but not necessarily better between the two formats. I remember when CDs were first marketed as having greater sound quality, etc. I repurchased many of my favorite vinyl recordings on CD for the sake of convenience. I would never go back to vinyl.

@@SteveAuger2021 I’ll buy a box set that includes vinyl if that is all that is available. I miss the packaging size of vinyl - which is the only format I purchased up until 1987. I won’t even look at my old records, though. In the early 2000s, all of my vinyl got wet in my mother’s basement where stored when I moved out several years earlier - the basement was bone dry for 40 years prior. My two favorite collectible records (Metallica’s RTL on the Megaforce label, signed by all members and GNR’s Live Like a Suicide) were damaged. It makes me sick to look at them.

Hey Brendan who influenced your musical tastes? I am in my mid 50's and my older Sister had all the great classic rock lps. I've got some more questions for you: 1. Jewel case or Digipack? 2. Do you make digital copy of your collection? 3. What's your opinion on ecopack CD packaging (CD in a cardboard sleeve) being more common nowadays? 4. Are you worried about CD rot?
@BrendonSnyder Жыл бұрын
Hi Micha! Since these are questions I cover quite often in regular videos I’m just going to answer these here for you. I prefer jewel cases because if a case breaks I can replace it but if the digipak or cardboard case gets damaged I have to buy a whole new CD. I don’t make digital copies of my albums because I have a streaming subscription for listening on the go. As for CD rot, it’s not an issue here in the US so I’ve never dealt with it. Thanks for participating and submitting your questions!

I used to think the booklets were the way to conserve space. Then I started noticing that the discs were getting scratched by the CD pages that held them. A most entertaining video - your channel has addictive qualities! I have two questions: a large proportion of the items in my collection were purchased as a direct consequence of having read music critics’ newspaper and magazine reviews, as well as immersing myself in reference books such as Robert Christgau’s ‘Rock Albums Of The Seventies’ , ‘The Rolling Stone Album Guide’ and ‘The All American Music Guide To Rock’. Are you heavily influenced - or dissuaded - by good and bad reviews? Secondly, what do you have against bootleg albums? There are some beautiful examples out there, on both CD and vinyl. It is unlikely much of the featured material will ever see the light of day on officially approved product. Compact disc releases on the Japanese Empress Valley Supreme Disc and Tarantula labels, are fabulous creations of art, design, and content, though they are admittedly, highly expensive. That said, the corporate labels could learn much from the bootleg industry’s often remarkable attention to detail.

I get a lot of the same questions as you, though I "only" have about 5000 CDs. I would be interested in seeing some of your rankings for favorite albums not in the usual hard rock and metal genres. Here are my answers to your 12 questions... f 1. Why do you own over 5,000 CDs? Because I like music. I like all kinds of music. I like to have a library that I can pick from for whatever mood I am in. 2. How do you have time to listen to all that music? If I own it, I have listened to it. More than once probably. And yes, I go back through it all the time. Not in order, but I might be on a 70s kick or a blues kick or a modern kick. If I don't know what I want to listen to I may grab stuff that I haven't listened to in a while. 3. Will you ever stop by music? Not a chance. I do stream, but for music I really like I still feel the need to own it. I make mixes for the car, etc. And since I own it, I dont' feel the need to pay for a streaming service (though I do have Alexa and she can help out where my collection fails). 4. Do you consider the need to collect a music addiction? Sure. I am always trying to find new things. It's better than drugs or alcohol though. 5. What do you plan to do with your CD collection when you die? I don't plan to do anything with it. I'll be dead. That will be up to my wife and daughter. I do hope they memorialize it somehow, though. 6. Why do you prefer CDs over vinyl? Convenience and durability. I did used to prefer albums. I like the bigger art work and the experience you had putting on vinyl, but vinyl went the way of the do-do for a while and I can't get on board with the overpriced hipster vinyl rebirth. I don't need to re-buy stuff for 4 or 5 times what I have already paid for it. Record companies already got too much of my money. 7. Who is your favorite band? AC/DC 8. Are you into any non-rock artists? Many. I love old blues, jazz and country. I like alternative rock... I like R&B. Some other faves are artists like Ray Charles, Wynonie Harris, Little Walter, Wes Montgomery, Earth Wind & Fire, The Temptations, Brandi Carlile, Charley Crockett, Nikki Lane, Autechre, Radiohead and a million others. 9. Do you listen to any modern artists? Mostly folk and alt country (Brandi Carlile, Nikki Lane, Charley Crockett) but I do like Doja Cat, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, The Oh Sees, Dawes, Jenny Lewis, Wet Leg and more. 10. DID discs (Top 5): ACDC - Powerage, Pink Floyd - Animals, Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers, Bruce Dickinson - Chemical Wedding, Brandi Carlile - By The Way I Forgive You
