I am sure that Cobain's suicide did add to his notoriety but I do remember him being a huge star even before that happened. Just to give you and American music fans here some context. You have to remember, I am not even from the USA- I was a teenager in the early 90s and I grew up in a rural provincial part of England. Everyone knew Nirvana and knew who Cobain was, and everyone was copying him, right down to his haircut. He was really the last iconic global rock star - even before his death. People often say the suicide gave him the notoriety, I am sure there is some truth to that particularly in terms of the legacy there has been since, but I clearly remember how huge Kurt/Nirvana were even before that, and his death was a main story on the British national news bulletin.
@garryiglesias4074 Жыл бұрын
I approve, in 1991, in high school, in France, we were all jumping on Smell Like Teen Spirit during our parties. Kurt was an Icon, and we were all shocked when he died. And yes, I agree that he might have been the last "worldwide rock star" to that level.
@lippi2171 Жыл бұрын
Dad was a rock fan in Eastern Europe, same age as Kurt at the time, as soon as Nevermind came it became a regular listen for everybody in that age group and of course SLTS became a party anthem immediately. It somehow resonated with youngsters all over the western world and therefore immediately gave Kurt a sort of icon status way before his death
@jimmycampbell78 Жыл бұрын
@@Joe-ny2up He had a charisma that is hard to define. I think looks as you say, and this edgy artsiness combined with a vulnerable thing. There's no rock star since him who has been as iconic, but I think timing is everything. If Nirvana had come out 10 years earlier they might have been as obscure as Husker Du and something else might have appeared and made eighties rock seem out of date.

Mellon Collie is like Pet Sounds and Abbey Road (along with a few other Beatles albums) in the sense I can listen to them endlessly. I always seem to discover something different when listening. For me (and like you I'm only including bands I either love or are considered legendary by others) I've gotta throw in Out of Time by REM, Blood Sugar Sex Magik by RHCP, and anything by Aerosmith.

Great video Brendon. For myself since I was born and raised in Chicago I was stuck in "Classic Rock Hell". One radio station in town we use to call the " Zeppelin,Pink Floyd,Rush and Van Halen" station. In other words everytime you'd turn it on you'd hear one of those four bands or all four withing 5 to 15 minutes. So the albums I love and don't need to hear again: 1. Pink Floyd - The Wall 2. Rush- Moving Pictures 3. Van Halen- 1984 4. Led Zeppelin - Pretty much 1 through 4. The other issues was that those four bands not only were overplayed but the same 4 or 5 songs were played. Ugh... I with you on the Eagles for sure as AC/DC BNB as well as Metallica 's Black Album. Again all great albums but I just don't need to hear them.

Brendon, I really enjoyed this video. However I enjoy all the old album from debut to the long run. I would probably get criticized for never putting Hotel California as my #1 album. It would come in somewhere mid way. And it’s not that I don’t like the album. End of Rant/comment.

@BrendonSnyder Жыл бұрын
It all depends on how much you listen to it and for how long. But I also think it has to do with if you grew up during the original release of it too. Lots of people have been commenting that the debut album from Boston is one they never need to hear again. I love that album it didn’t grow up in the 70’s when it was ubiquitous. That said other albums like Led Zeppelin’s IV I didn’t grow up with either but because everyone always places it on the top of rock lists and countdowns it’s everywhere. Part of the “worn out” aspect is seeing and hearing it talked about too, not just hearing the music. But we all hear things differently and if you don’t tire of it that’s great.

Number Of The Beast is Maiden's best album, and metal's finest hour. NOTB is like Plato. There are thousands of philosophers that came after Plato, but almost all of them just restate Plato's arguments. NOTB is an album that showed everyone how intense and melodic metal can be and needs to be heard at least once a quarter if someone calls themselves a metal fan. "Watch him Die, According to plan, He's dust on the ground, What have we learned???" That is awesome!!!

I had G&R Appetite For Destruction as brand new vinyl back in the day and it is in my current CD collection, but I just never need to hear it again. Axl has always been tedious and even Slash is a tad overexposed these days. I hope that you don't hate me now. 😃. The main hit songs are played way too much on local rock radio. Somehow DSOTM never seems to get old for me, but I don't play it that often these days. I have it on ordinary vinyl (with poster and stickers) and remastered CD,. The same goes for Led Zep IV. I have not played it in years. Stairway To Heaven came on the radio a few days ago and I cranked it. 🔥. - Heather

It's more like with me that there are some multiple Lp's/Songs per artist rather than individual LPs. U2- I think that I'd become aware of the band with "Pride (In The Name Of Love)" but I really became aware of them (like everyone else) with "The Joshua Tree" which had 3 big hits on it, then before I knew it there was a follow up LP "Rattle 'N' Hum", which also had a few big hits on it, and then they wouldn't give me a break so they released "Achtung Baby" which has 5 big hits - "The Fly", "Mysterious Ways" ,Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses", One", "Even Better Than The Real Thing". I had U2 fatigue.I only relented with "All That You Cannot Leave Behind".Nowadays I like U2 from 1980-2000 - the one song, really that I still can't stand is "One" . Gun's 'N'Roses - "Appetite For Destruction" - I quickly got off the G'N'R train - But the song/video which haunted me was "November Rain". Nirvana - "Nevermind" - I recall coming home from school and seeing the video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - little did I know that that song and "Come As You Are" would be so played to death. I don't even think that those 2 tracks are the best songs on the LP (yes probably the most commercial) but I prefer "Lounge Act" ,"Territorial Pissings", & "Aneurism" which I only discovered maybe 18 months ago ( because I didn't buy the LP when it came out).

When you say you can't put an album on and hear something new, try listening closely to just one instrument all the way through, or maybe follow the harmonic rhythm or time changes (Rush, I'm looking at you) or some other structural aspect of the song. Something new might pop out. Better yet, if you play an instrument, try to learn the song, and it will suddenly be fresh again.

Also here in the Atlanta region the rock station “The River” only plays a very limited classic rock songs….. because they have to pay a high amount to the record companies for the rights to play the songs on the air… You basically can set your clock on when these overplayed classic rock songs will be played they just change he song list in different order. Also, I hate to say this, but rock ‘n’ roll is a dying format here in this region. I have to say maybe even talk radio is ahead of. It certainly know that urban music is tops in this market.
@BrendonSnyder Жыл бұрын
The problem is they no longer distinguish between genres anymore. Everything is called “rock” when it’s not. You have non rock artists marking rock albums and it’s diluting the field. If there was just rock format radio then it might do better but it’s all mixed up.

I can't subscribe to this point of view. But don't worry, I'm still subscribed. 😁 By your estimation, I should never be able to play The Beatles, The Rolling Stones or Elvis Presley ever again. And I sure still do. And I can even still play "Stairway To Heaven". ha! It depends on how good these songs and albums were to begin with. And I also own a lot of CD's. However, I find after a month with a new album, I'm likely to go back to my favorites.

@@BrendonSnyder My comment is also a bit tongue in cheek. And you do get "points" for saying that people should still own these albums. It's the music that you don't like, but were "forced" to listen to a million times, that was the real problem. 😁😄
@MartyMurray Жыл бұрын
I can still listen to a lot of those records, but there are a few I have of my own. Number one on my list is Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours." My friends played that album endlessly for months when it came out, to the exclusion of everything else and almost to the point of ridiculousness. It is a great record, but I am so sick of most of it now that I really don't need to hear it again. Number two for me would be Pink Floyd's "The Wall." Overplayed on the radio like crazy, and this was where Roger Waters really began to let that obsessive/depressive side of himself come to full fruition, and he has never stopped with it, even to this day. I really can't stand the guy at this point. His music is SO depressing, SO negative and SO cynical, I really have had enough of him. There are certain tracks on the Wall that I really still love, but I don't care if I ever hear that album again. With most of the big classic bands, I have made up compilations for myself of all the best songs from their records, and I prefer to listen to those now. I know the original albums inside and out, so picking out all the songs I still enjoy the most satisfies me much more at this point in my life.

I would say “Siamese Dream” would be The Smashing Pumpkins most overplayed record. Yes, there were some good overplayed singles off “Mellon Collie”.
