Work on the benchtop for my unimog camper. It is seriously the most rigid bench I have felt. Like the way it has turned out.
Will do future video on tapping threads - but deff recommend gun taps, they are a game changer especially if threading into difficult materials like stainless.
I cannot vouch for the quality of steel used on these taps, but have had a decent look to find ones that look reasonable for the price. Please let me know if you buy some and find them lacking in quality
To find a suitable drill, for metric sizes subtract the pitch from the diameter so for example if you have an M6x1.0 tap then 6-1.0=5 so a 5mm drill. This will give you the recommended 75% threadform. If imperial, then you'll need a chart.

These are cheaper and sold as a kit, steel may be poorer quality

And I agree with Balthazar's comments below too, your manner of communication is very refreshing and without fluff. Your channel is one of just a few that I don't routinely watch at double speed. The links are enormously helpful too--being able to buy great products with full confidence--without having to do the usual time-consuming research first, saving time and money and getting the best result first time... I ended up here looking for more info on LTO cells, noticed your skills with machining, ended up learning a few things to apply to the daily job of upfitting where I use a lot of aluminum to fab up components. It seems like more each day I at least wish I had a Bridgeport yet still can only get clearance to get taps and keep my chop saw and other saws running. Certainly going to get some of those drill taps, had not once thought about wax on the saw.... makes complete sense though. If there is a particular type of wax you use on the saw, I would be appreciative of that info. I am also building a coach bus into a tiny home... just doing it super slow. Weighing a lot of options for the power still and the info you gave on off gas of materials is something I have been considering. That A25 meter looks like a great option for testing materials. Cheers.
@brendontait6968

Hey Xavier and welcome... with regards to wax on saw for aluminium, really anything will work. I got given some blade wax I use, but crayons, candles.. wd40... anything will do the job. The blade just needs something to stop the aluminium bonding to it. Once the buildup reaches a threshold level, it builds up rapidly and can break tools. Gun taps are a game changer.. I don't know why they aren't the standard tap that is used across the board. Will do a bunch more on offgassing materials, but wasn't sure it was something people wanted to see, so thanks for your feedback on that...

So many months later now i still haven't heard at all (here in the EU) from these batteries. They would be perfect for in campervans or bicycles but for some reason they are not used. They still promote li-fe baterries like the new next generation. A batterypack like this is what i would expect in a high quality campervan from Sweden (Kabe) or so, together with solar panels mounted on the roof.

Just a point of clarification, Stainless Steel will only cold weld to other Stainless steel variants. If you tap into aluminum or regular steel and use a Stainless Steel Bolt or Screw you don't have to worry about Cold Welding.

My experience has shown that stainless fasteners can gall in aluminum threads if unlubricated. Stainless on stainless has more of a tendency, I've found that any metal that uses a protective oxide has the ability to gall when used with another metal with a protective oxide. While I've never seen and wouldn't expect stainless to gall on mild or carbon steels. I've had stainless fasteners gall on aluminum and titanium previously, so I find it good practice to use a thread lock or antiseize whenever threading stainless into stainless, aluminum or titanium. It also helps mitigate to some extent corrosion from dissimilar metals.
@JoshAQ
@JoshAQ 3 жыл бұрын
@@brendontait6968 I can't say I have any experience with titanium and stainless. Galvanic corrosion is certainly a pain. I had to heat and beat my wheel hub off as the a-arm housing was aluminum and bearing housing steel. I certainly have had issues with installers not using anti seize when installing equipment and that has lead to a mild cursing fit as we cut, drill and re-tap. I will defer to your experience in aluminum. I normally don't crank down hard enough when fastening into aluminum for fear of stripping the threads. I also don't live near a salt water body. By the way nice battery build and nice UniMog build. I am looking forward to watching the rest of your videos.
@brendontait6968
@brendontait6968 3 жыл бұрын
Titanium is very similar to work/machine as stainless steel. You're right in the fact that I wouldn't be putting enough pressure on the threads to cause any drama. I think what ive found happening is the aluminium binds onto the threads of the fastener in a similar way to how it binds onto cutting tools, then picks up and pulls the thread out when you remove it. The csk head screws are terrible too with the tiny allen socket. I see it as good practice with these types of metals to assemble with something on the threads.

Great work, very informative with the right detail. More please! FYI If you want more subscribers faster, there are mainly only two adjustments at this point in time. Bet consistent with releases. For example if you want to release one per month, bi-weekly, weekly, or whatever you decide, pick one and stick with it for at least a few months, and make the releases on the same day each time or close to it. More impactful however is the following. Ask viewers in every video to be sure and leave a comment when you ask for a thumbs up/ like. Comments are more important than likes but both are good. Let others know you read them and they will leave more, I'm sure you are well aware of that. So, more comments and more accurately cosistent releases tell the algorithm to imporove your ranking and suggest your channel to more potential viewers, thus leading to more subscribers, and on and on...

I'd be cautious of using an old blade. If the blade is not sharp, the dull part rubs the aluminum and binds to the blade. When there is enough buildup, the blade binds. I've seen two mitre saws destroyed due to this..

I was told to install lengthwise for less joins and overall better for the structural integrity of the camper. Curious if it was mostly because it was easier working solo with your method, or if there was a reason behind it ? Cheers bud !

I’ve been researching building with 18650’s but you’ve 100% convinced me to use these instead as mine will be in a camper too. I’d like mine to be a smaller capacity so it’s transportable. Am I right in assuming a 6S1P pack would be a ~13v 40ah battery battery pack? So $300 for 40ah or $600 for 80ah still seems comparable to a decent brand 18650 pack of similar capacity.. I’m new to this so I could be way off. Would be great if you could build a mini battery, would be interested in seeing how you would make an enclosure for it. Thanks for the video! Found it very educational!

Yes, yes, the Overlanding community has great demand for an "inexpensive" (and replicable) 12V, 100Ah DIY lithium battery build. However, even with your cylindrical cells, such a battery would still be upwards of $600 USD.
@brendontait6968
@brendontait6968 3 жыл бұрын
It all depends on how you see the value. I actually think that 1kWh of battery that has the ability to charge in just 10mins, can work in pretty much any ambient temperature and has potentially a 25 year life is not bad value even at $600. Around $25/year. I am likely to build significantly "cheaper" packs on this channel for those that aren't too concerned about harsh operating environments or longevity.

What if water spills out from the sink or platform down to the batteries. Is that not a hazard
@brendontait6968
@brendontait6968 3 жыл бұрын
No, the batteries are at low voltage and there is a large gap between any significant voltage potential. The cells are sitting up off the floor. In a coming video, I'll be making a polycarbonate cover for the batteries which should keep any water/cutlery away from them.
@mattolsson8816

I love your videos but... A sink over a battery pack? That just seems like a really bad idea with possible water leaks
@brendontait6968
@brendontait6968 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt, I have close to zero concern about that. I'm fairly good at making things not leak. There will be several drawers between the sink and the battery and also a polycarbonate cover over the pack. The cells are sitting off floor level with a gap underneath and have plenty of space with nowhere for water to sit, the end of the batteries at the sink end is at near ground potential and the cells would probably not care too much even if they were temporarily submerged. My biggest concern was a fork or something falling down between the drawers - hence the polycarbonate cover. It's possible I'm wrong and everything will go pear shaped as with a lot of things in this build bc I'm intentionally being unconventional and most everything I'm doing is untested. But that's half the fun, glad you like most of my videos =)

Hi Brendon great content. Question: how are you going to protect the battery bank from the sink directly above it? I was expecting to see to build in some sort of water protective cover that sits over the batteries? If you have no thought that far, perhaps a tanking system (similar to what you would paint an upper floor bathroom floor with to prevent water leeching between floors) could be used in this application? that would mean you just build your basic plywood box and just paint the bottom shelf with the tanking system, and then direct a drain pipe to somewhere safe for water build-up to go.
@brendontait6968

Hey, in a future vid, you'll see me build a polycarbonate cover for it. The cells should be fine with a bit of water on them if things go really bad. The cells are sitting above the floor, so if water dripped down, the cells won't really be sitting in it

@@brendontait6968 Cheers, there are some progress vids of the truck and the router on my channel and I have a truck build thread on patrol4x4. I see you have retrofitted your mill with LinuxCNC, so if you know what to tweak in the .hal file to make LinuxCNC output a pwm signal to run my vfd I would be stoked....

Just found your channel Brenton. Loving it! You'll be able to make lots of 'fush and chups' now... ha ha ha. Really interested in a cheap large battery. I'm trying to work out how to build a battery tractor for my small farm (only 70 acres). Your info is VERY GOOD! Keep up the good work mate!

You do great work. Videos are instructive and entertaining. Just to let you know (if you don't already know) The reason your your stainless steel bolts seize in aluminum is because of metal mismatch, or galvanic corrosion. Stainless and aluminum get nasty when H2O get in between. You could get that issue around your counter frame.
@brendontait6968
@brendontait6968 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alain, yeah a couple things can happen to cause this... You're right about galvanic corrosion in the presence of an electrolyte. Another thing that can happen with metals that use an oxide layer as means of corrosion protection (think Aluminium, stainless, titanium etc) is that when threaded onto something, the oxide can be wiped off and the metal can actually cold weld. Normally most severe with like metals. Having a layer of 'glue' on the thread can prevent either issue from happening.

I'm not caring about water next to the hob but what in heavens name are you putting a water source above an electrical supply which is guaranteed to create some electrolysis in the near future ???? Brendon you have a really personable character and followers will be inspired to follow your designs but you should reach out to others on safety matters with your designs and iterate until all aspects are 100% or someone's going to kill themselves!
@brendontait6968
@brendontait6968 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Stephen, thanks, tho I'm not sure I share your concern of someone killing themselves. However... There are details about the pack that I haven't yet shared. The distance between busbars is quite large so would be difficult to get any electrolyte path conduction and the potential difference between each is quite low. The cells are spaced from the floor, so any water on the floor will not touch the cells (much less the conductors). The pack now has a polycarbonate cover which I'll show on a future video. The main reason for this cover was to avoid the danger of dropping a fork down there. I just haven't got around to making updated videos yet.... working on it tho.

Hey, a small tip. In industrial setting the taps for this kind of aluminum profile just press in the threads. Look under brand name "minitec" or build your own with a high hardness screw that Maschined a bit. This way the maximum load is quite a bit higher.
@brendontait6968
@brendontait6968 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I do use flow taps quite a bit and tried using them on this, but the dimension of the hole in this particular profile were too small for it, it ended up distorting the tee slot section. Pity they didn't extrude it to flow tap size.

I like your pack but seeing the kitchen unit made with aluminum over it feels scary in case of an accident even if this are such safe batterys... I know many people build vans without thinking of the possibility of a crash, but you seem to think a lot about safety thats why it even mention it

Keep an eye out for a coming video, I have made a polycarbonate cover for it. Part of the reason I used the 4040 section is so that the battery has a rigid frame supporting it incase of something like that,

I would add a contrasting piece of solid hardwood along the edge of the countertop. Gives a nice professional finish and provides protection from splinters and the plywood from damaged. A simple and easy thing that adds a ton to the finished product. You could round it over or keep it square, options are vast

Being under the sink that area is going to be prone to water, is it a good idea for you to have your batteries right under the sink?
@brendontait6968

Hey Justin, hopefully not! But the reality is the batteries probably wouldn't mind being submerged for short periods. I have mounted them so the cells are not touching the floor. Have also made a plastic cover to go over top of the cells - coming to youtube soon!
