I do think the extra info on Laerryn's plan does a lot to redeem her in my eyes. She saw Evandrin fade away into nothing with zero trace and no knowledge of what happened to him, so it seemed insane that she thought the solution was to force an entire city to follow him into the next plane. I genuinely couldn't understand how she thought that was a good idea or what gave her the right to decide the fates of all those innocent people. But if it's just forging the road and giving the city the option to travel to the other plane and presumably they would send in smaller teams to make sure it's safe before sending the city (and possibly find Evandrin and bring him back), that makes way more sense.

I have a theory. Cerrit would have trained Maya and Kir. Eventually, through Maya’s intelligence and knowledge from the memories of Pasha along with the spy/expositor knowledge of Kir, the two of them could have founded the Cobalt Soul. It’d be crazy if Matt would add that as a Easter egg. They don’t have to be the recorded/remembered founders but I think they would have had at least a hand in the foundation of some of the Cobalt Soul principles even if they didn’t start everything. This may not come to pass but it’s going to live as my head canon. Love this series and this cast.

I think even if it's not directly founding the Cobalt soul the fact that the eye symbology from this ancient order of godless rogues uncovering the truth and protecting people and then after the calamity for which she was present being the symbol of Ioun the goddess of knowledge prophecy and SKILL being this order of non magic user investigators is just amazing

17:30 - Ghir Dranas theory. About Ghor Dranas, it was built by the Betrayer gods on the material plane over in Xorus. What happened when Vespim summoned The Lord of the Nine Hells [TLNH], was that he broke the barrier the Pime Deities set for the Betrayers. Because he specifically used TLNH name it scribes it to the tree trapping him. The others were free to walk through the gate and went ahead to build the city in preparation for TLNH. Side Theory, TLNH manipulated Zerxus using his beliefs of redemption to free himself when he realised he got caught by the tree.

Interestingly, the copyright name thing may have become a in-lore mechanic. Even though Asmodeus, Pelor and the like are names that we know, there's a good chance that those are not their *true* names. In fact, there's a chance that the god's true name has been erased. The Raven Queen accepted this when she ascended, but Vespin did not. If he had accepted that his name would be erased, and didn't try to keep it, his ritual would have succeeded. Whatever Vespin did would have worked if it wasn't for his own faults. To tie this in to C1, Vecna is the name we know. There is no way in the nine hells that the god of secrets would go by his true name.

Of course, but you can still copyright names in context specific situations like a D&D setting for example.
@elbruces2 жыл бұрын
@@Luboffin Not really. When D&D was new (early 70's) the Tolkien estate tried to sue them over the concept of a magical ring that makes you invisible in a fantasy setting. Also "orcs" and a few other things. They lost on those counts, but won one: that's why D&D has to call its hobbits "halflings." If you didn't make up the name of the thing, you don't get to claim copyright on the name of the thing. Context does matter for trademark law, but not copyright. Also, the CR streams have used D&D copyrighted terms plenty of times, it's fine. Also, WotC is letting Stranger things use "Demogorgon" and "Vecna" (and completely mangle their original meaning) so it's not like it would be impossible to get permission if they needed it.

I'm still of the impression that Vespin didn't want to take the place of a god. I think he attempted to destroy them and failed, becoming a slave to the gods instead of destroying them. We know that trying to do the regular ritual is incredibly difficult, imagine how much harder and how much more room for error there is in one that tries to destroy a god. I think Vespin was working with people who were on the side of the betrayers or swayed by them and they messed it up somehow.

I had the impression (a commenter above wrote the same thing) it was even worse than that: the name of whatever mage attempts the ritual is erased during their success (an example is the Raven Queen) and Vespin couldn't handle that so he allowed the ritual to fail. His vanity, his need to have been known to have done it, caused his downfall.

One thing I missed was that Patia should've done the rest of the episode without an arm and another few fingers. But that was kind of forgotten in the entire coaster ride. This was also the first DnD session I cried about, and for a good 45 minutes too...
@Luboffin2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I wonder if it was just something they forgot or if they counted the Reivify spell as healing (which I don't think it does RAW, but hey its the Age of Arcanum I guess).

@@Luboffin well, if it's the age of Arcanum they could also have just thrown around true resurrection or something. Oh well, it's a minor thing in an otherwise great mini series

Regarding Ghor Dranas and where it could be. I mean if one level 14 wizard can find a way to bamf a city from plain to plain it’s likely that the BG did as well. also minor detail but the party reconvened before going to the Hall of Prophecy and not after, Cerrit got there just after Zerxus revived the 2 party members and healed Nydas.

I got so absolutely destroyed and amazed with this episode, really (and yeah, it's so massive a full video of it would be so long XD) Of this half of the episode I guess I would highlight two things: The first is how manipulative Asmodeus is and how proud deep down was Zerxus. The Lord of the Hells lured him with a small sight of Evandrin and a glimpse of the look himself would have as the angel he once was, and Zerxus was too convinced about the possibility of redeeming that poor celestial (also, it was interesting to see that he, unlike Aeorians, didn't thought that mortals created deities, but instead, that they called them here) The other thing that I found interesting is that Evandrin is sort of alive as an astral being now, and technically he could be alive by the time of Campaign Three, since in the Astral Sea time is... Not there exactly XD

My issues with Laeryn are less about the greater motivation or an issue with her life's work. Those seem perfectly fine. It is with the behavior in the MOMENT... a brilliant, calculating genius who casts blight at a tree she knows is of massive, almost holy importance WITHOUT A MOMENT to consider, discuss, and even against a companion urging her NO. Without even knowing or discussing back and forth. Knowing full we that SHE had every reason to believe it could even damage her, and no reason to believe it would do anything to help or further her cause. She sees it caught her toy... she rushes to cast a harmful spell against it. WIth friends connected to it appearing to commune with it? I think she was built and played brilliantly. And showed the behavior of chaotic or neutral evil... at the very least in those moments. But to act so quickly and without a moment's consideration to rush to Blight rather than use her cleverness? Acts of selfishness without consideration for consequence, price of outcome. I mean, totally understandable. I don't think, given the whole theme of pride and hubris that Laerryn lived among, that Laerryn herself could be considered "evil", we certainly don't get enough of look at her beyond this story to make a judgement like that... Impulsive regarding this? Absolutely. But then again, a'la Lady Briarwood, who isn't willing to destroy a world or two, and in the end, have it be an angle of a love story? :) Personally, I love an interpretation of her and Loq as potentially evil characters on some level. I think some of that is inevitable among those who lived in Avalir.
@samuelerrington7542 жыл бұрын
In the interest of fairness, she allowed herself to be grappled and held back from casting blight initially. It was when the tree shot out and stabbed Patia and Loquatious that she cast blight as an effort to save them from being killed by the tree. She stopped the casting out of rational thought, then cast blight out of fear for her loved ones. Not exactly flawed character motivation, IMO.
