Please, take your salvation seriously. If you haven't read at least three books of the Bible yet, please consider today. The first book of each testament and one you chose yourself, I'd say that's an important minimum amount for a mustard seed of faith, with a bit of forgiveness like Jesus Christ taught. The beauty is he, a line earlier, tried to drop that implication, he instantly clocked people didn't pick up on it, so rather than keep it a subtle reveal letting the cast slowly connect the dots, he decided to be explicit - his character wouldn't hide this data, so why should he? A lesser actor would wait for others to pick up on his implication. He knew it would be more effective to be direct.

@@euandunbar8050 Its sort of the tragic opposite. In the world of Darkness the vamps beside Cain did get a option for redemption.Which is that Golconda thing Adrian briefly mentioned. However some vamps didn't exactly like it and actively killed off those who followed it, destroyed information on it, and hoarded the rest. So its more of a unfortunate "damning everyone else so you, yourself to keep power" kinda deal. Or rephrased the grand game of keeping powr Annabelle and Adrian discuss, directly involve measures that mitigate vampires making more positive institutions.
@28Decimo
@28Decimo 2 жыл бұрын
@@euandunbar8050 not really? I mean what you imply is heavy interventionism by God, which Christianity points out is not God’s way. This goes into a larger discussion of free will as by using intervention to dictate the course of events heavily would go against the concept of free will. He gives his faithful tools against the darkness but he cannot eliminate it. One of the previous courses was, specifically that Cain must walk the Earth forever marked by his sin, thus God is bound to his own word, unless he wants to collapse the universe.
@timjones5953
@timjones5953 2 жыл бұрын
@@euandunbar8050 This is only subtle irony if you're actually rooting for an interventionist, "all up in your business" kinda god, which the world of darkness game line just kinda doesn't have, at least in the modern setting and in relation to your standard monotheistic creator deity. It's the whole thing with free will, yknow? You solve everyone's problems infinitely and forever, is anyone really alive at all? If none of your choices have consequences because an omniscient being fixes all your fuckups for you, all of your triumphs lose meaning as well. And, I haven't seen the whole video yet, but isn't Adrian ex-catholic church? That would mean he very much does see problems with it, hence his leaving.

It's not the most intensely delivered line, but having this character's first line be a fairly calm "you had a copy of the Book of Nod right in your hands" was a brilliant way to introduce him. Right off the bat you know he's incredibly dangerous even if he never personally gets violent because he's several tiers of knowledge above every member of the inquisition we've seen so far (and even a whole lot of the vampires we've seen) and knowledge is power. Being able to convey that level of danger with a single calm line that isn't a threat in a totally non-violent situation doesn't happen that often. One sentence and we immediately know how serious this guy's entry into the story is.

god as a raised-catholic-but-turned-out-to-be-gay-agnostic, brennan as adrian both set off every alarm bell in my head and also made me desperately want to trust him. it's the conflict de-escalation tactics before the real conflict begins, it's the talking around the problem, answering questions with questions, giving just enough of an answer for you to need more, it's the casual show of force, the weaponized meekness, the "i want to help you" talk that's dropped immediately if the right person commands, it's the everything about him. fuck. a true masterclass.

Most of the time when it comes to the second inquisition stories like to show the leader as a sort of cliche, the zealous vampire hunter, the meek boss, the out of their league mortal. Brennan as Adrian gave out a very interesting image for how to make that zealous nature unique, by instead of making him someone so zealous as to hate into someone who clings on to the belief that there is salvation in the things he hunts. It makes people sort of sympathetic to his character as when he does die, as the storyteller says he sees his greatest fear come to life which for me isn't the fact that he died but the fact that Annabelle the miracle he was looking for turned out to fail him.

While most (including me) may disagree on the virtue and necessity of his actions, I think the scariest part of Adrian's character is that he isn't wrong. Victor wanted fame, power, and control over his land, the lives of his children, and the kindred of Los Angeles. Jasper hated kindred, including himself, to the point he only feeds on them, but he tortured and embraced a prisoner so that he wouldn't feel the guilt of feeding while doing what others of his kind do to humans. Nelli might be the most selfless and human member of the coterie, but she doesn't care if she has to take lives if it meant saving her friends and family. Adrian may have missed the mark on some, but he nailed Annabelle, she is a zealot of rebellion and can't see the fact that while she might say she wants peace, she really just wants to change the status quo and none of her friends want the paradise she says she wants. She kept attributing him to the catholic church, but he is an ex-priest, he isn't the church but she needs to see him as an institution because if he isn't, she actually has to listen to him. The moment I realized she was never going to join him and that he was absolutely right about Annabelle was the moment she said "... there are fronts all over the world, there always will be. There will always be people like you to take down and maybe I'm not going to be the best at sticking around to rule people cause that's not my style, but there will always be a need for the soldiers of the revolution." She, without actually realizing it, is saying that she is just removing one institution for another, but in her mind, because she isn't a ruler but a soldier of the revolution she isn't at fault for the institution. Adrian is brilliant and having Brennan play him is perfect as his personal kindness totally subverts our expectations of a villain. 10/10 Antagonist, would have my forehead seared with a crucifix again. Edit: Grammar and Spelling.

Adrian is brilliant because he wins even when he doesn’t he is out to destroy vampires because he believes they are monsters. You die when you die and being embraced is just a cold body feeding off the living. Annebelle throws a wrench into his theory she shows some level of empathy and restraint implying that she isn’t a monster that despite being a vampire there is still somehow some humanity left in her. when she chooses to side with the monsters and kill Adrian she proves she wasn’t acting out of humanity but spite against the system and he died proving she was a monster like them

I agree with most of this but 'We are the kingdom of the Lord God' is an institution sentiment. @@alexisloveschocolate I don't really have that much experience with Christianity, so I have a question to ask, are we not in the kingdom of god? I mean we might have free will but we still have to abide by his rules to be "morally upright" individuals, not trying to be combative just getting insight. Also, not being an active part of an organization very much does remove you from being a part of it, because by this logic even though I left Boy Scouts in 6th grade I have still be a part of it since then. The Catholic Church and the act of being a Christian are two seperate things, he is acting on behalf of his supposed God but removing himself from the power that is the Vatican. He doesn't see himself as an authority, just someone making the hard choice for the betterment of humanity. he isn't "absolutely correct". He is a fanatic. A scarily convincing one at that, if you look at real life examples. I think that is part of what makes the performance so great - he is convincing because of his composed attitude, and his seeming kindness for Annabelle. Brennan uses soft inflections and very polite language. But beneath the surface he is a dangerous zealot who completely disregards any true empathy, with a hint of that coming out during his interrogation of Annabelle and X. Labelling all kindred "monsters" collectively, despite the fact that they have much more nuance than that. are they monsters, technically? sure, but their evil is not so different from that of the kine. There certainly are kindred who have more goodness in them than some humans. him declaring Annabelle a monster at the end after rambling on how she is a miracle before just proves how black-and-white his worldview really is.

Brennan really made every vampire in this show look like either a child or a monster. And I have no idea how the dice work in this game, he beat the others by a significant amount but still died all the vampires get to make what seems like several moves before he makes one? Can't tell if the rules just seem weird or it's because this is obviously angled for the vamps to win.

As far as I know the Vampire the Masquerade system doesn't really account for someone playing a regular human. It was kind of built with the intention that every player would be playing a vampire of some kind. Characters are all supernatural in some way and balanced to be able to contend with each other, so I think it's less that vamps are overpowered and more that regular human was introduced into a system where they could really only be underpowered because they're not supernaturally fast or strong. So I think they're doing a Homebrew system which allows humans but because they've got no supernatural powers they turn out kinda weak. I think some of the newer upcoming expansions to the system are trying to find ways to add humans in a way where they're not underpowered? The newest setting is called Hunter: The Reckoning so I feel like it's probably a system that makes more room for Humans, but not much is known about it yet.

Even though Brennan out rolled, he did say he wasn't trying to actively avoid the attack and left it up to god. Jason Carl (The DM) values that above all else, even more so in this series then in some of his over stuff from what I've heard of his reputation. Given that Adrian is excommunicated and bound for hell. It falls to viewer interpretation on as to why God didn't intervene and save him. I think from a meta perspective it could have been that a miss would have proven gods existence to Annabelle, which might have derailed plans the DM had for the rest of this series given the amount of prep that would have had to have gone into all of this. It's not really easy to say without talking to Jason Carl himself though.

"I told you your revolution was successful and you looked *heartbroken* ." It's honestly nuts to look back at this and see the throughlines between the themes Brennan challenges Erika's character with here and the way he challenges and looks deep in on Danielle Barkstock in the Seven. Not the same argument, but the same idea of putting the rebel under the microscope, whether that's as a martyr or a leader. Not dismissive of fighting for a cause but critical of whether one truly longs for success, are truly ready to get what they claim they seek. Danielle was so insistent on her dedication to being part of something larger she fully deceived herself into accepting the end of her own existence as *good* to her. As noble, a concept that she won't even be able to value once she's rotting food for worms. "Danielle doesn't need a story, right? You're just an ecosystem."
@travislyonsgary
@travislyonsgary 2 жыл бұрын
Though admittedly given the nature of the world, it wouldnt truly be the end. Institutions are very much like ecosystems in needing a variety of factors to stay stable enough to exist. Daniel's desires were a bit beyond the scope of play for a season, more the type of stuff you would get in a longer fantasy book reprecussions wise. Or a sci-fi series that notes the relativity of seperation for organisms. The world of DnD has such a vast spectrum of mixins for consciousness and perspective both induced on oneself or induced on others that its honestly a much different paradigm foundationally for the subject of self than one normally gets in human focused series. The implications of fully being able to communicate with with completely alien physiology, transform between various forms while maintaining a stream of consciousness and fully being able to parse that into ones perception as a human/humanoid are incredibly vast. Its a interesting case of a character who's foundational queries diverge from the more mundane relationship focus of their story.

20:15 I'd say Anabelle's lack of killing is more cowardice than temperance. She has beaten people, helped to kill them and had them killed but has never had the courage to stain her own hands with it, instead letting other people do the dirty work for her. Ellenore is a prime example of this, embraced by Ramona as a favour to Anabelle, Anabelle is definitely responsible for her death. If you want another example, Nick, all the way back in season 1, she beat him to within an inch of his life but didn't have the guts to finish him, instead having Nellie do it for her. He was killed by her decree but she didn't have the courage to do it with her own hands. The way I see it, having someone killed is worse than killing them yourself because it's just as evil and infinitely more cowardly.

@@teeth716 actually quite a lot. Specifically a man such as Adrian who is so devoted to his religion that he would break the rules of an organisation claiming to follow the words of that religion to save one of the very creatures he was ordered to wipe out seeing a same sex relationship and not being stereotypically homophobic about it. In fact, quite the opposite, he congratulates it and states how important it is, specifically with the “condition” Annabelle has. Not only does it shine a light on how not every devoted Christian/Catholic is a gay hating monster but it also shows the character’s attitude and personality. This man is a follower of god, not the institution that’s made in his name. He sees someone he believes to be saved despite being the enemy of the church and does everything in his power to ensure not only that he can save her but that he can show there’s a method to liberating vampire kind without killing the converted. He was more than willing to allow the others to join him and Annabelle and seemed just as shocked as the others when one of his men insisted on having Carver and Elenor in a separate car to Annabelle. However he isn’t a fool either, he realises there is a method he must take and has a limit to what rules he can bend or break. No matter how much he disagrees with it. In a way Adrian and Anne are the same in that way. They both will bend or break the rules for what they believe in but at the same time honour a code that has kept them and the people around the alive and secret. The only difference is that Anne by the nature of her clan will always need an enemy to fight while Adrian actually has a goal in mind and bends and breaks the rules to achieve that goal.

It's a testament to Brennan's performance that during his scenes, while I'm obviously supposed to be rooting for the vampires, I _definitely_ don't. Think about this from the church's perspective, a bishop who believed in the redeeming power of Christ so fervently that he defied church doctrine and tried to save vampires. And the vampires killed him. What an absolute idiot. He impeded the efforts of the Second Inquisition for a stupid idea that was self-evidently false. Vampires are to be exterminated. That should have been unquestioned, but because of Adrian the Second Inquisition failed. If there ever is a Third Inquisition, there will be no one to speak for the vampires, and it will be even worse.

He’s working within a system that despises him to make it what he considers to be better. @@katlbird Adrian as a character was also a beautiful progression of the archetype. Good enough, 'good' enough as a person that unless you pay painstaking attention to what he *doesn't* say, most of us would not consider him the same kind of monster.

i know it's besides the point but it's cannon that the banu haqim like to discuss philosophy with the catholic elements of the sabbat, two players who understand faith and philosophy on this level having a discussion in character would be interesting.

How is this incarnation of the Brendaddy so much more terrifying than his Asmodeus?

I would argue that we find the more human antagonists more terrifying, simply because we can see aspects of ourselves, our neighbors, and people we've seen throughout everyday life. Gods and eldritch entities cause an innate fear of the unknown, but that can be quelled to a certain extent.
