It's not the most intensely delivered line, but having this character's first line be a fairly calm "you had a copy of the Book of Nod right in your hands" was a brilliant way to introduce him. Right off the bat you know he's incredibly dangerous even if he never personally gets violent because he's several tiers of knowledge above every member of the inquisition we've seen so far (and even a whole lot of the vampires we've seen) and knowledge is power. Being able to convey that level of danger with a single calm line that isn't a threat in a totally non-violent situation doesn't happen that often. While most (including me) may disagree on the virtue and necessity of his actions, I think the scariest part of Adrian's character is that he isn't wrong. Victor wanted fame, power, and control over his land, the lives of his children, and the kindred of Los Angeles. Jasper hated kindred, including himself, to the point he only feeds on them, but he tortured and embraced a prisoner so that he wouldn't feel the guilt of feeding while doing what others of his kind do to humans. Nelli might be the most selfless and human member of the coterie, but she doesn't care if she has to take lives if it meant saving her friends and family. Adrian may have missed the mark on some, but he nailed Annabelle, she is a zealot of rebellion and can't see the fact that while she might say she wants peace, she really just wants to change the status quo and none of her friends want the paradise she says she wants. She kept attributing him to the catholic church, but he is an ex-priest, he isn't the church but she needs to see him as an institution because if he isn't, she actually has to listen to him. The moment I realized she was never going to join him and that he was absolutely right about Annabelle was the moment she said "... there are fronts all over the world, there always will be. There will always be people like you to take down and maybe I'm not going to be the best at sticking around to rule people cause that's not my style, but there will always be a need for the soldiers of the revolution." She, without actually realizing it, is saying that she is just removing one institution for another, but in her mind, because she isn't a ruler but a soldier of the revolution she isn't at fault for the institution. Adrian is brilliant and having Brennan play him is perfect as his personal kindness totally subverts our expectations of a villain. 10/10 Antagonist, would have my forehead seared with a crucifix again. I agree with most of this but 'We are the kingdom of the Lord God' is an institution sentiment. Also, not being an active part of an organization very much does remove you from being a part of it, because by this logic even though I left Boy Scouts in 6th grade I have still be a part of it since then. The Catholic Church and the act of being a Christian are two seperate things, he is acting on behalf of his supposed God but removing himself from the power that is the Vatican. he isn't "absolutely correct". He is a fanatic. A scarily convincing one at that, if you look at real life examples. I think that is part of what makes the performance so great - he is convincing because of his composed attitude, and his seeming kindness for Annabelle. Brennan uses soft inflections and very polite language. But beneath the surface he is a dangerous zealot who completely disregards any true empathy, with a hint of that coming out during his interrogation of Annabelle and X. Labelling all kindred "monsters" collectively, despite the fact that they have much more nuance than that. are they monsters, technically? sure, but their evil is not so different from that of the kine. There certainly are kindred who have more goodness in them than some humans. him declaring Annabelle a monster at the end after rambling on how she is a miracle before just proves how black-and-white his worldview really is.

As far as I know the Vampire the Masquerade system doesn't really account for someone playing a regular human. It was kind of built with the intention that every player would be playing a vampire of some kind. Characters are all supernatural in some way and balanced to be able to contend with each other, so I think it's less that vamps are overpowered and more that regular human was introduced into a system where they could really only be underpowered because they're not supernaturally fast or strong. So I think they're doing a Homebrew system which allows humans but because they've got no supernatural powers they turn out kinda weak. I think some of the newer upcoming expansions to the system are trying to find ways to add humans in a way where they're not underpowered? The newest setting is called Hunter: The Reckoning so I feel like it's probably a system that makes more room for Humans, but not much is known about it yet.

I think from a meta perspective it could have been that a miss would have proven gods existence to Annabelle, which might have derailed plans the DM had for the rest of this series given the amount of prep that would have had to have gone into all of this. It's honestly nuts to look back at this and see the throughlines between the themes Brennan challenges Erika's character with here and the way he challenges and looks deep in on Danielle Barkstock in the Seven. Not the same argument, but the same idea of putting the rebel under the microscope, whether that's as a martyr or a leader. Not dismissive of fighting for a cause but critical of whether one truly longs for success, are truly ready to get what they claim they seek. Danielle was so insistent on her dedication to being part of something larger she fully deceived herself into accepting the end of her own existence as *good* to her. Though admittedly given the nature of the world, it wouldnt truly be the end. Institutions are very much like ecosystems in needing a variety of factors to stay stable enough to exist. Daniel's desires were a bit beyond the scope of play for a season, more the type of stuff you would get in a longer fantasy book reprecussions wise. Or a sci-fi series that notes the relativity of seperation for organisms. The world of DnD has such a vast spectrum of mixins for consciousness and perspective both induced on oneself or induced on others that its honestly a much different paradigm foundationally for the subject of self than one normally gets in human focused series. The implications of fully being able to communicate with with completely alien physiology, transform between various forms while maintaining a stream of consciousness and fully being able to parse that into ones perception as a human/humanoid are incredibly vast. Its a interesting case of a character who's foundational queries diverge from the more mundane relationship focus of their story.

This is a good point, need to figure out what it is we are doing something for (and her Beast, she knows just drives for revolution as is) but I kind of understand Annabelle. One was a success but we are still exhausted and there's still much more to do. Same as the little wins today against what's going on in the US, Russia, UK, Hungary, Ukraïne. Thing is some see one win and think that's it "you don't need my help anymore" when it's far from over.

20:15 I'd say Anabelle's lack of killing is more cowardice than temperance. She has beaten people, helped to kill them and had them killed but has never had the courage to stain her own hands with it, instead letting other people do the dirty work for her. Ellenore is a prime example of this, embraced by Ramona as a favour to Anabelle, Anabelle is definitely responsible for her death. If you want another example, Nick, all the way back in season 1, she beat him to within an inch of his life but didn't have the guts to finish him, instead having Nellie do it for her. He was killed by her decree but she didn't have the courage to do it with her own hands. The way I see it, having someone killed is worse than killing them yourself because it's just as evil and infinitely more cowardly.

What’s there to talk about?
@matthewmason77922 жыл бұрын
@@teeth716 actually quite a lot. Specifically a man such as Adrian who is so devoted to his religion that he would break the rules of an organisation claiming to follow the words of that religion to save one of the very creatures he was ordered to wipe out seeing a same sex relationship and not being stereotypically homophobic about it. In fact, quite the opposite, he congratulates it and states how important it is, specifically with the “condition” Annabelle has. Not only does it shine a light on how not every devoted Christian/Catholic is a gay hating monster but it also shows the character’s attitude and personality. This man is a follower of god, not the institution that’s made in his name. He sees someone he believes to be saved despite being the enemy of the church and does everything in his power to ensure not only that he can save her but that he can show there’s a method to liberating vampire kind without killing the converted. He was more than willing to allow the others to join him and Annabelle and seemed just as shocked as the others when one of his men insisted on having Carver and Elenor in a separate car to Annabelle. However he isn’t a fool either, he realises there is a method he must take and has a limit to what rules he can bend or break. No matter how much he disagrees with it. In a way Adrian and Anne are the same in that way. They both will bend or break the rules for what they believe in but at the same time honour a code that has kept them and the people around the alive and secret. The only difference is that Anne by the nature of her clan will always need an enemy to fight while Adrian actually has a goal in mind and bends and breaks the rules to achieve that goal.

It's a testament to Brennan's performance that during his scenes, while I'm obviously supposed to be rooting for the vampires, I _definitely_ don't. Think about this from the church's perspective, a bishop who believed in the redeeming power of Christ so fervently that he defied church doctrine and tried to save vampires. And the vampires killed him. What an absolute idiot. He impeded the efforts of the Second Inquisition for a stupid idea that was self-evidently false. Vampires are to be exterminated. That should have been unquestioned, but because of Adrian the Second Inquisition failed. If there ever is a Third Inquisition, there will be no one to speak for the vampires, and it will be even worse.
@gs40112 жыл бұрын
Its even worse when you remember this: It is unlikely that every Second Inquisition member was wiped out. The third inquisition will be using Adrian as an example to dissuade others like him. "You want to save the creatures? A bishop by the name of Adrian tried that. Like you, he was a true believer in the power of Christ, yet he failed. The Vampires he put his trust and faith in murdered him in cold blood. The creatures are to be exterminated, nothing else."

@thepeanutgallery99808 ай бұрын
The thing is, Adrian isn’t EVIL. He’s not GOOD, but he’s not the kind of villain that would become a main bad guy. Adrian TRULY DEEPLY believes in the idea that vampires can be saved. His ENTIRE GOAL is to prove that Vampires not only have souls but the fact that they do means they can be saved by God. He’s working within a system that despises him to make it what he considers to be better. At the same time, he is actively participating in that system and allowing the evils it perpetrates in the name of chasing his own good. And even more than that, in a personal level, he considers anyone vampire or otherwise who commits sin to be beyond help.

What a tragedy that the things that make Adrian right are 100% dependant on the fantasy setting where vampires and holy magic are real. Brennan's compelling arguments are made more powerful because the people he is speaking to are literally creatures that must feed on the living to survive. @@Goliath5100 Yeah, Adrian lined it out very early on with the quote about aesthetic opposition and even used the dog chasing car metaphor, very reminiscent of Heath Ledger's joker. Basically, both the Joker and Annabelle are one in the same as they're chaos without any real purpose. It's about sending a message, but that message is that we live in a society. Victor and Nelly were charismatic by the sheer fact that they knew they were monsters amd had an understandable goal with a clear endpoint. Rule LA, and then run it the way they saw fit. Basically, the way they saw fit would be through order, mot too dissimilar to the Camarilla. Anabelle however wanted to fight the idea of a system by building a system, so basically We live in a society, Batman.

@@kstar1489 But I kill my meat before eating it and Vampires are capable of going to blood banks or getting blood from other sources. Instead, some actively kill people and that makes them monsters. If a vampire drank pig blood I wouldn't care just like if I ate human meat it would be an issue.

Only to have that kindness thrown back in his face by the one he tried so desperately to help
@Pyre Жыл бұрын
Mostly right. He never actually answered any of the questions about the righteousness of his Church or faith. Every time he was confronted by it, he dissembled, or turned the accusation back around, or answered a different question. The answer to the Missionary Paradox is easy. "God is perfect, we are not. We try to follow His plan the best way we know how." And he couldn't even muster that. And I don't for a second believe that was an unintentional falter on Brennan's part. It happened too often for that.
@mattheww19306 ай бұрын
@@Pyre I think thats the point of his character though, he isn't there to convert her to the church or to tell her why the SI are the good guys. He's accepted he is beyond salvation himself and again left the active service of the church seemingly because of his personal beliefs as I think he mentions that he keeps needing to remind members of his own group that they are a religious group, not a military. He's very much disillusioned with the church because he understands it so well, especially since he was an ex bishop.
