id like to see field coms done?I have a radio but never served in the field since i was in the navy so never had to use personal radios or fire a gun more then qualifying.So green there too.But im ready to fight when i have too! So need more training then i have received. Before covid19 i couldnt afford it and now even if i had the cash for the training i cant train! One trick with MREs I learned was to field strip the place the items back in the bag the wrap the bag around itself the tape it off. It reduced the build by 50% or more and still leaves you with a bag for “various” purposes.

The one thing that always surprises me is seeing the different operational Styles between two different countries for example in Australia where I am from it is the job of the lance corporal to do all the pre battle checks excluding the radio operator (sig) he's in charge of the radio didn't his responsibility to make sure he has everything to maintain and operate it probably but his personal gear that he will be taking on the mission will be inspected by the lance corporal

Real good video I served thirty years in the United States Army almost twenty in the Ranger Regiment.I retired in 2010. I retired a Sergeant Major. I remember as a E-5 squad leader checking the men find it empty canteess. Young soldier idiots. I retired in 2010 . My first deployment was Greneda in 1983 with the 82nd I forget what regiment. We were always busy training or deployed especially after 9/11 9/13 we were there.. To much time away from my Wife and kids. Then the initial invasion of Iraq. Our Battalion jumped into Iraq to take a dam rumor was Saddam was going to open the locks and flood Baghdad. That would have been a two year mess. We did work with Marines more with Seals. Common goal. ( SUA SPONTE) SEMPER FI

I have seen people cut a toothbrush in half to save weight. 😁 You need to keep an eye on people trimming Ration Packs ensure they don't throw away needed items just to load more of their favourites leading to less than full nutrition over time.

I just found this channel and it seems to be fundamentally sound combat training. Impressive. A humble suggestion from a veteran. It’s all about the drones. Low cost, quality video images, day or night. Quickly deployed from a backpack for a high in the shy look or a quick treetop peek. There is no substitute for real time intelligence. They that master the drone......will master the field.

Thanks, the Marine Corps is integrating drones into the flight. We have small man portable drones integrated at the squad and Plt level. They're helpful. However, don't fall into the trap that this impressive new technology is the end all be all. We have jammers, man portable ones too (We've been using since the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to block signals for radio detonated IEDs). Drones can and are jammed. One that happens they are nothing more then a rock falling out of the sky. Ifs its something that runs on batteries or radio signal it can fail. In the end, unless a Marine with a rifle occupying the ground, you haven't taken shit from the enemy.

If you spray paint (after scuffing with sandpaper) the wallyword D-rings with a mat color (green, brown, tan or black) they work just as well as the high speed, low drag operator rings.

This is awesome as a retiring US Army CPT and previous Sergeant that has been in now 24 years. This is a dying art form with the new troops coming in however we've been doing counterinsurgency for so long we forgot these type of tactics. As Future Leaders it is imperative that they learn all of these lessons learned to do peer or near peer combat operation.

@@Brent0331 80 - 84 I was infantry and all we were issued was a poncho and rubber boots like the kind you got when you were a kid that slipped on over your boots. For cold weather we had wool pants and a wool shirt as well as you field jacket and liner poncho liner wool inserts for your leather gloves. I'd kill for the issue the modern military gets.

16:30 I totally agree with you. I always tell my men to pack to much food (I still make sure they didn't pack a whole buffet worthy of the whole platoon) because I find that once you are out in the field doing hard work you burn through way more food than you thought.

As a writer doing military research for a project, I want to cordially thank you. This information is...invaluable. Sorry if it's a dumb question, I'm sure there's a good reason, but I can't think of it, so...I'm curious and I'm asking. Respectfully, one thing I did not quite understand is the point you made at 3:06 - about the importance of how the enemy perceives you, especially if they're insurgents hiding among civilians. Let me explain: I've seen Everyday Marksman's videos with you, and you mentioned something similar being the case with civilians. That if you look like a soft target, like you don't know what you're doing, you're gonna attract the attention of potential attackers, because it's the principle of the path of least resistance - why attack someone who looks like a force to be reckoned with, when you can attack someone who looks like they're easy pickings? It's logical, and it makes perfect sense in a civilian setting, but I don't see how it applies in a military setting. Pardon me if I sound ignorant, but isn't one of the USMC's jobs to terminate insurgents with extreme prejudice? Like, you're Marines, those are insurgents, enemy combatants, you are enemies, a fight is inevitable and someone is going to die, so why does it matter if they attack one group of Marines (because they look undisciplined, unprofessional and lax) and not another (because those look prepared, professional and focused), when they'll eventually have to fight the professional guys too, since their ultimate goal is to drive the US military from their lands? In fact, wouldn't you want them to attack you by looking less professional and focused than you actually are, causing them to underestimate you? Especially when I've heard rumors of Russian Spetsnaz in the Middle East doing things to actively threaten, antagonize and provoke lSlS, such as burning Qur'аns and sending them body parts of dead members in boxes, like they're the friggin' Sicilian Mafia. Basically, sending them the message: "We're here for you and we'll destroy you by any means necessary". That's my question in a nutshell - if you're there to fight these guys in the first place, why would you want them to avoid attacking you? One possible explanation is that you don't want to be ambushed, but insurgents use guerilla tactics, so if they're ever gonna attack you, this is how they'll do it. With ambushes, dirty tricks and asymmetrical warfare. P.S. What kind of eyepro is this (at 2:03 - 2:08)? Thank you for your time, thank you for your service.

14:05 I don't know if anyone else caught this but the pens shown are the sharpie type. This means they require a spring system to work, are made of cheap plastic and have a higher possibility of just refusing to work, especially in that AO. I would recommend smuckatelly get a set of more robust pens, either cheap ones with caps (that he would blow to clean every time) or some twist metal ones. The last thing you want to carry is dead wait and those style of pens are just waiting to fail. Also would it kill him to take a pencil, we have limited room in that notebook and a pencil is a great way to maximize use, though he may have to sharpen it with his knife.

Peacock pocket warmers are great to stay warm, even with inadequate clothes. Make sure your things don`t rattle and that your food/snacks can be opened&eaten without sound. It`s very interesting what difference different packaging makes. It`s also a good idea to have food that doesn`t have a problem with heat in your jacket or pants cargo pocket. I like to have a phonton light on pacebeads ( i use it to count, usually not my steps but things and landmarks) and basic E&E things as well as "emergency ration"(not what you usually buy as such). In regards to "paper" i like pocketcards with usefull informations and a small calendar with the time when the sun goes up/down as well as the moonphases. Also a civilian phone can be very, very usefull (a cheap one does the trick as long as it`s robust and doesn`t have to be charged often but there can be made a case for a smartphone because of some useful apps, gps photos and videos you can send in real time. That bring said it all depends on the situation. It`s very interesting how the rhodesian did things and the syrians do things.

Back in the day , we had "T-O & E " . Tables of organization and equipment . A list of mission specific items for various scenarios , terrain , weather etc. . This included everything from climbing gear , whether entrenching tools were required , ammo type .... on and on . All preplanned for a specific AO . Nice video

I've trained with the Royal Marines in the UK, they are very professional and very thorough in their orders/mission prep/etc. I participated in the field evolution of their Juniors and Seniors course for their NCOs, it was legit. It was like 48 or 72 hours (I can't remember exactly) of continuous missions, it was crazy. No sleep, just continuous training.

Okay, Gunny, Brent: I have a few observations that are of a completely different vantage point. I also have a couple of questions. But first I will begin by saying THANK YOU, for all of your hard work in YOUR DOWNTIME to bring us this information! There are plenty of other things a Senior NCO could be doing in his downtime. Observations: 1.Warmth is relative. For instance, I have a prior possible (it was never documented by a medic) cold weather injury from finding myself on an M-16 qualification range on a VERY cold day with a high wind chill factor. My hands, at times, can get cold more easily than someone else's. 2. Socks: Military socks are okay. I have plenty of leftovers. However, I've recently learned of a much better sock, called, "Darn Tough". They come in tactical as well as civilian colors and designs. $25/pr. sounds pricey at first, until you learn that they have a lifetime replacement warranty! They are also much better cushioned and retain their thickness, even after excessive wear. I'm phasing out all of my socks for Darn Tough's. I'd rather have a few reliable pieces of gear than a lot of crummy ones. GI socks are cotton. Darn Tough's are synthetic and will dry quickly in the sun. I've worn the same pair two days in a row, with sweat and everything, with no issues, when allowed to dry overnight. 3. Batteries: I strongly urge the splurge on Lithium ion batteries. They last longer both when stored in or outside of (preferably outside, for long periods of time) the item of gear for which they are intended. I also lost a good optic at a bad time thanks to a Duracell (I'm not picking on Duracell! In fact, they are an excellent battery, but come with faults I will cover, as do all alkaline batteries) alkaline battery that was left in the optic, in order to be "ready-to-go" at all times, and left in the car in cold temperatures, it ruptured and ruined the optic. That's when the optic company recommended Li batteries, also I hangout at Batteries Plus Bulbs...A LOT! And those guys know and can teach you...A LOT! Questions: Camo: What style are you wearing in this vid.? Italian Vegetato? It's neat and might work well here in the winter. Camo: Where are you still able to acquire ATACS-FG? I LOVE THAT CAMO, and it's been discontinued. I will complain that it was awful and notorious for fading once washed, which was the first thing I did with them, since they smelled like a fish processing plant upon arrival. Other than washing them in baby laundry detergent, which is what I subsequently did, do you know of any ways to restore them? Dry Bags: What are common names to search for this particular type of bag? Military surplus is generally pretty affordable.

It was one of my favorite spring time patterns too. You can search for WP bags: USGI Water proofing bags, Willie Peter bags, WP bags, etc. All will give you your intended results. I see SOME ATACS-FG's out there, but it's usually in an odd size. Between RIT Dye and spray paint, I have managed to somewhat reconstruct the color scheme. The best alternative I've found so far is Bruce's "Apple Green" mixture on the Army OCP's. It is very similar to the green dominant ERDLs. I highly recommend trying it out!

True story I left my poncho in my pack in 03 while in Iraq. It doesn’t rain in the desert!!!, it rained for three days. From that day forward the poncho stayed on my deuce gear. Always have a solution for rain no matter where your at. Good stuff and you had one job schmuckatelly !

I would go with a patrol bag and goretex bivvy bag over poncho and liner. Not a large weight difference and no volume difference, but huge difference in warmth. Otherwise, an outstanding, professional series of training videos.

I caught MOST of the inconsistencies with Smuckatelli's equipment, missing the socks, the fact that the tripod was a field luxury chair (though I still told him to put it up), the grenade not being in its pouch, the extra light wear, and the socks of all things. That's why you keep a list ready.

I remember back-in-the-day. all Alice packs were packed the same, whatever was in the center exterior pouch on my pack was the same item in everyone's center pouch. And everybody was packed the same on the inside from bottom the top. The rule was that if someone was KIA or wounded, we would strip them of gear before loading them on the medivac...

Excellent video mate!! I try to teach my kids on "Keep your s**t together" logic so I have less searching for "I lost my...whatever". Also the "Keep it simple" system is a must. I see all that used here. Even now as a civilian I travel a lot and use both logics daily and the pre-departure check is actually what you show here. Funny, 24 years ago in the service they showed us this in a "you wont need this,you are AirForce maintainers"manner but when there is no aircraft or airport is unserviceable they told us "you become infantry". S**t we are a danger for everyone then; we even had issued earmuffs instead of guns 😁 And our country had total of 6 MiGs and some helicopters... Lucky we ended the conflict quickly...
