This is the 7th video of the series on the BMW Nav6 and how to make it make it work well for both onroad and offroad navigation. This video looks at some of the major settings in the Nav6, and how to optimise them for both on-road riding (using Routes) and Offroad Navigation (using Tracks) and how to create different modes which contain these optimized settings.

I've got a Nav 6 and honestly, it's like my Sat Nav in my Jag I had back in 2006. Good job there's road signs and I have a good sense of direction.

Hey Perry, Nope, there are plenty of people that find Basecamp a beast and difficult to use. But once you get used to the quirks and strange things about the package, it actually has tons and tons of functionality... so it's worth sticking with.

@@brentbat I've been riding a long time, started in junior scrambling, now motocross in 1972. Touring UK & Europe for about 15 years but until 2 years back I still used maps and hand written prompts on the tank. Had a TomTom for a couple of years but just used A to B, sometimes with in twisty route mode. Having bought an s1000xr I then picked up a Nav 6 at a bargain price I thought it time to get to grips with it. Planning to spend some time in Germany in June, staying on the edge of Lake Bodensee (Konstanz). I'm going to plan some days out in the Swiss/Austrian Alps and now feel confident enough to pre plan and set times and dates for setting off.. Cheers, windy (Martin)

@@martinfennell782 Hey Windy, Wow, you were riding motocross when I was 10! Well done. Yes, it is definitely worth perservering and getting the hand of things. It will make your trip so much easier if you have your Nav all loaded up with various routes and options before you go... then you can just choose your ride for the day and go. Incidentally if you are struggling, I'm in London this week (so I'm on your timezone), give me a holler at brentbat@gmail.com and I can set up a zoom call and help you out with anything that you may be struggling with. I did this recently with a couple in Tasmania and a simple 20min zoom was all it took to turn them into "Pros". at route planning and navigation.

Hey Brent, don’t stop at 7, keep going! This is the best instructional video(s) I’ve seen on Basecamp and the Nav 6. You’ve really unlocked Basecamp for me (Routes vs. Tracks was a revelation!) and I’ll definitely get much more value from my Nav 6 now. Have you shared these on the BMW GS groups on Facebook? You should - they’re very useful. Thank you very much!

Hey Allan, Glad you are enjoying the series of videos. I've got two more videos planned for this series and I'm planning on shooting them in the next couple of weeks. The first will be using the Navigator to navigate on Roads (there are bunch of tips and tricks that come into play)... and the last one will be Navigating using it offroad (which requires a very different technique, but it is just as effective).

I use mode " Auto" for fastest time with highways and tolls allowed and dirt roads avoided. I use mode " motorcycle" for shortest distance, no highways, no tolls and dirt allowed however sometimes I avoid dirt roads so I don't take my wife on a 40 mile one out west. I mostly avoid ferries on both. I just pick destinations and ride toward them, no premaking and preloading routes or tracks. Sometimes I enjoy putting in a destination and just using the compass needle all day to show me the angle to my destination and showing me the remaining distance next to it. I've learned to look up "gas stations" out west so you can look for your brand and pick an exit that the tank will make it to and have gas and their buildings/stores you prefer.

Brent, I have successfully create several maps in Rever, to BaseCamp, to Nav 6. THANKS to YOU! Test ride today - Nav 6 is not giving audible turn-by-turn voice instructions. I cannot hear "turn right on Jones Street". I scroll on the Nav menu to "Speak" and right-press Wonder Wheel - I get a voice command. But no automatic voice turn-by-turn instructions at upcoming highways/streets. I'm looking for a setting to enable automatic voice commands, haven't found it yet. Note: Schuberth SC2 is successfully paired to BMW, I can hear FM radio, etc., and hear Nav 6 only if I right-press Wonder Wheel at "Speak".

Thanks for all the tips! For On/Off road! Do you have a video on setting up the scroll wheel on the GS?
@brentbat
@brentbat 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Joaquin, I'm assuming you have got the scroll wheel working fine with Nav 6 so that it zooms in and out as you rotate. When I'm riding off road and I'm following tracks, I turn OFF Autozoom in the settings so that the Nav won't muck about with the zoom level, and then I just manually adjust the zoom level with the wheel as I'm riding... when I'm approaching a turn I zoom in to help me find the turn... when I've made the turn, I zoom out to get an understanding of the trail ahead etc. I hope this answers your question, if not just send me a follow up.

In the Nav VI, does off road give you a compass dial view with a red arrow laid over it pointing to the destination?

Yes, you can get the compass view whether you are riding in onroad or offroad mode, you just twist the jog wheel and it will cycle to the compass with the waypoint indicated.

Brent when I have off route recalculation on automatic will it recalculate to my closest point I have in the route? In other words will it keep me on my route or totally recalculate to the end point?
@brentbat
@brentbat 3 жыл бұрын
Arthur, if does a recalculation it will recalculate to the next waypoint in your route... if you don't have any waypoints in your route then it will be recalculating to the destination. I always like to create my route with a few key waypoints along it, that way if there is a recalculation I know it is still taking me to the next major point on my route.
