About 35 years ago I made my own dentil molding out of walnut similar to the "i" dentil but without the dot on a table saw. Just like how you described, but flipping every other notch. It was for some built-in walnut bookcases. I probably didn't have it placed right, but at least I didn't buy it. I always love your videos. Thanks again for sharing.

Brent very nice presentation. Don't forget the importance of laying out the dentil to achieve a full tooth or full gap at your inside and outside corners!

I have had to make dentals twice in the last 6 months, prior I’ve never dealt with them. One was to match an existing and the second was to achieve clients vision. Unfortunately, not one of them had a bed molding underneath them but I did do the 1-3 ratio. I used 5/4 stock, made a jig and used a router. Thank you for sharing, I’ll keep this in mind if I ever get to do them again.

Ok, nice. Thanks for sharing.

It really helped that you showed where the dentil goes! First look at the cheap one didn’t look bad or wrong to me. But after you pointed to where it’s supposed to be my mind re oriented and immediately I could identify that the “off the shelf” moulding is visually off.

Agreed!!

Some people talk about a hierarchy of scale. Start with the scale of the building, then a wall , then a portion of a wall, then a window, then a portion of a window, etc. That's why looking at a "minimal' building messes with your head, it crushes a person's psyche..

I was thinking more of the line of what's worse? The dentil office or the doctor office?

Brent, when you say 1/3 or 1/4, what proportion do you actually mean? Gap between the teeth is three or four times wider than the tooth width? Or what?
@BrentHull11 күн бұрын
Thanks, the face of the tooth compared to the gap. So if the face of the tooth is 3/4 of an inch, the gap is 1/4 of an inch.

Which home style the dentil molding is appropriate . How about Eclectic house?
@BrentHull Жыл бұрын
You have a lot of variety. You'll want to match it up with the crown and other moldings in the home. Good luck.

Do the other parts of the cornice become smaller with the addition of dentils or does the height of the cornice increase?
@BrentHull Жыл бұрын
Height increases typically. Thanks

I wonder what percentage of the classical prescriptions appear correct to Brent because of the actual proportions and what is from studying rules and being annoyed when they vary. I often do the latter with food. I understand respecting the originals but I don’t see anything unbalanced about dentils with roughly equal positive and negative space. I respect the desire to preserve previous styles exactly as they were, but the styles the several styles that we are studying are bastardization of previous styles that then caught on.

Interesting question and idea. Thanks for the challenge. I'll try to find some good examples.

Any of the "finger joint" or "box joint" jigs could be adapted to make dentils!
