I must say, the moldings are phenomenal! However, seeing all this craftsmanship, sure makes me dislike "cookie cutter" style houses more and more. And I really didn't think it was possible to dislike them more than I already did lol.

I’m with you. I do remodeling and I’ve been doing a lot of 100 year old homes lately and REALLY starting to admire the craftsmanship and I can really speak more knowledgeably about the subject thanks to brent! Found brent hull from finish carpentry TV.

I’ve always liked how it looks so intimidating, but once you start to break it some it really simplifies the work

I can't believe they had CNC machines back in those days to make all those molding pieces.

Great information! Those rooms are so spectacular...because of the beautiful moldings created by real craftsmen...artists. I wonder if there was a bit of competition among some of the best to outdo each other!? Or was there a hard play book...no deviation allowed. ( I bet there was healthy competition!) Thank you Brent. Love learning about this stuff!

Thanks, the competition existed among homeowners more than craftsman. They had the money and a good home expressed their sophistication and taste. Glad you like the content.

Fascinating. When I look at books on period architecture, even those that purport to give a historical survey of styles, they consistently neglect to talk about interior architecture--what door style, what trim style, etc., etc. And then of course 99% of builders, it seems, only know to grab what is tagged "crown molding" at the big box store. The number of Brent Hulls out there, like the number of Matt Risingers, is woefully small compared to the need. What's an average middle class American, with at least a bit of sensitivity to the house in which he lives, supposed to do?

Thank you Brent! Is there a book that shows the differences in home design between Georgian and Federal homes? I want to build my own (around 3000sq ft) central hall colonial, but I really don't know where to start. My favorite homes are the old New England colonials.

Nice, for interiors I like the 3 volume book Colonial Interiors. For exteriors, i would start with HABS drawings as they layout and study great historic homes across America. Good luck!

I'm sure I'm the only one but l am new to studying this out. When l try to remember Georgian vs. Federal l think about the federal government always whittling my money away as federal style does the wood. I know, I'm the only one remembering it like that! Haha

LOVE your content and take notes regularly. BUT, please, I beg you, move up a century! I am having a terrible time finding authoritative sources for Craftsman homes from the 20s, mock Tudors and Spanish Revival homes from the 30s, and "Cape Cod" colonials from the 50s. ALL of your information peters out at about 1900. I agree with you, those older styles of building were marvelous. They are absolutely foundational for all architects. But I am interested in the 20th century also. Oh, c'mon, pretty please. I'm sure you can do it!
