Like him or dislike him, you can't deny that he has an extremely valid point whenever he talks about there being a 'culture of narcissism' - something thats now the norm.

I am 18 and the issue of alienation caused by technology worries me greatly. And guess what: It's inevitable! Furthermore, I think it's naive to suggest that 10 years from now Facebook will be anything like as benign as what it is today - which of course considering how serious the issue already is - is really saying something. Essentially, if you think it's bad now, just wait.

I love his books, particularly Less than Zero. His comment about "neutrality in the face of horror" reminds me of Almost Transparent Blue. Also written by a 23 yr old, enfant terrible, Ryu Murakami. Very similar subject matter. Very similar writing style. Yet, written 10 yrs prior in another continent.

sure, but as he says he is pointing out facts about society, hes not judging those facts however. he is simply describing, its the viewer or reader that are making the judgements and extracting a message.

This is a prime example of an author writing about much more than their intention with the writing. A great writer can't plan all the things his/her work will say. To pretend that his books have no message is naive--of course authors almost never (James Joyce and some others are exceptions) sit down saying "this, this and this are my intention. These are my statements which critics will extract from it." But without doubt, as much as Ellis says it's not, "American Psycho" includes a message.
