@randysavage16176 ай бұрын
@@jonbourgoin182 I believe Bret meant after the Hart Foundation won the belts in 1990 for the last time. Demolition had their best run in 1988 and won the belts again in 89 & 90, but the Hart Foundation was the last memorable team in the WWF to win the belts from Demolition at Summerslam 1990. Teams who are memorable, but that success was really remembered for their WCW days are the Steiner Brothers and Road Warriors/Legion of Doom. The only team that I think is memorable that came after the Hart Foundation and won the tag titles was The New Age Outlaws.

As far as tag teams from the 80's go, I would say he's correct. I still remember Survivor Series '87-89 having the tag-team elimination match which consisted of 10 different teams; the roster during that time was stacked. Nowadays there's two sets of tag team titles and barely enough teams to compete for them.

Tag team wise the Steiner (brothers) sort of copied the Harts template. Yet they used the college wrestling theme. The Nasty Boys seemed to have a following for awhile but were fired for some reason by corporate. Still the tag teams were victims of stereotypical / lazy of an ideas like the Quebecers, or Bushwackers, The New Rockers, Headshrinkers, or Harlem Heat. Almost clique to the point that they did not seem to attract enough audience, or the audience felt they were being duped as dolts with the constant hype non sense being brought out as new talent..

Bret’s right about the tag team division falling off and Hawk. The WWF had some great teams but many of the teams of the 80s were breaking up and a lot of the new teams were made in WCW and Vince wasn’t going to push them to the moon. Outside the Natural Disasters, Money Inc., high energy/new foundation and the Beverly Brothers you had the head shrinkers, road warriors, Steiner brothers, and Nasty Boys. Power and glory were around a year or so but Paul Roma talked about how Vince had no plans to push them and everything power and glory was created by Roma and Herc. That Paul Orndorff told Roma that the only way power and glory was going to get over was if they made it happen. I think Animal had talked about how the road warriors run in the wwf was very weak at best. Hawk had a lot of issues at that time and they weren’t being given a chance to feud with some of the top teams. Like everyone wanted a proper LOD vs Demolition feud but it didn’t happen because Vince wanted to phase out Demolition and Ax was going through health issues but Vince and Ax were also fighting over the IP for Demolition. Bret mentioned the match between them two and it was a one off, power and glory became a squash match, the LOD vs Rockers match was at the end of the rockers teaming up, the feuds and matches just weren’t there.
@OikPoinFive17 күн бұрын

I don't think there were dedicated tag teams after that point in the industry. You just ended up with the business putting two talents together to technically have a tag team .. but it was always temporary. Stuff like the rock with stone cold, kane with undertaker .. and I can't even think of anything else it's so random when it happens. I think the only thematic one I can think of was the hardy boyz, and they were more 90s emo spectacle as like shock therapy for viewers. It was EXTREEEEEEEME product placement. I think the industry just focused more on individual stardom by that point, trying to fill in for the big names that were disappearing at that point. WCW was starting to make tracks .. and you saw more interesting tag team / group dynamics going on over there, so I bet vince wanted to try and distance the business away from it. Plus .. vince was hating all the money issues that was going on, and having a tag team kinda meant you were paying four people for a bit that could be filled with just paying two guys. Or for that matter, they were starting to push women more into the ring.

3 out of the 5 teams you mentioned were not even in wrestling during the era bret is talking about. steiners were in wcw. I took Bret's statement to be about the strength of the tag team division, which only really works when there are lots of good teams. For WWF, the mid to late 80s was perhaps the strongest tag team division they've ever had. The Steiner Brothers were amazing but didn't have good competition to fill out the division (in WWF). This is a WWF centered statement so WCW and TNA teams aren't relevant. Usos are not very good, and their gimmick is a rip off of a rip off of a rip off.
